Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

I was fighting a bear earlier, and was backpedaling to shoot it with arrows. I stumbled off a cliff, but didn't die. I made my way to the bottom, and could see the bear in the distance. It was still trying to attack me, slowly maneuvering down the cliff. It got to a spot where it stopped, and inched forward and back, forward, and back, and finally forward again and fell to its death

It reminded me of the scene from Robocop with ED-209 falling down the stairs.

Well first impressions from a rpg rookie. This game is magically delicious! However I think I am pretty awful

I don't understand how to upgrade my magic. I use the flame destruction and restoration to heal. Just finished the golden claw run. I tired joining the companions but couldn't find the guy Mammoths hate me and I got pummeled by a giant.

I chose a brenton and lit up the magic stone.

What should be my strategy? I just reached level 5.

You need to buy magic tomes to learn new magic. They have a ton in Whiterun. It's near Riverwood.

When you level up, increase your magicka and browse through the perks to see which will help your strategy the most.

You'll need to find a place to buy new spells. The mage in Dragonreach sells them (book section)... it seems that he offers better ones the higher level you are

Make sure you select the quest that you want to focus on via the menu and deselect all others, so that you can follow the arrow on the compass and map.

Don't fuck with giants at your level.

Should you always select magicka to increase? I've been splitting it up between health and magicka. One lvl i'll pick health and the next lvl magicka

Balance it as you want. If you find yourself running out of magicka in battle a lot, work on increasing that. If you're dying a lot, upgrade your health. There's no "right" way to do it.

IMO, your first order of business should be to go back and light up the theif stone. If you don't know what you are doing and level up too fast, the enemies are going to get a lot harder for you. Your stragagy really depends on how you want to play. Do you want to use magic or weapons. If your focus is on magic, level up magicika every 2-3 levels and then health once, then magicka 2-3 and so on.

As for new spells, you have to find the spell books to learn new spells or buy them. It might be worthwhile to check a wiki for who all sells spell books.

Did you remove the giant map from the guide? I kind of don't want to.

The King where I got thaned said I was eligable to buy a house within the walls. I went around and couldn't find an empty house. How is this done? And how much do they go for?

In Whiterun, you have to talk to the Steward. He hangs out in the same area as the Jarl. It costs $5K and is the Breezehome house right next to the blacksmith at the town entrance.

Also I hear that if you join up with the mages guild, you get a room where you can store your stuff. I don't know about you, but 5k is kind of a big deal right now.

I've found it easier to make leather strips. Just kill some wolves/bears, tan the leather, and make them into strips. I think blacksmiths sell them though.

There's a glitch to get the house and keep your $5k:

In whiterun when you're given the option to buy the house for 5,000 gold there is a way to get the home and keep all that gold. This proves to be especially useful for lower level players who want a house, but don't want to blow all their cash. So, make sure you talk to the Jarl's attendant who sells it to you when he is near a chest, dresser, or something you can store you gold in. Go through the dialoge, say you wish to purchase it, then once you've pressed A to purchse, quickly press B a couple times to leave this screen and then quickly deposit your money into the chest. This also works for all the upgrades available to the house. He will indicate they'll be in your home next time you arrive, and you'll see the key placed in your inventory but you will keep all the gold.

If you're just starting out and need easy money, there's always the woodsplitting thing in Riverwood.
