Do you know any more about this? The BD drive in my brother's system appears to be failing, and he was kinda wanting to get a slim system anyway. I think it's the 40GB model. He was going to see about replacing the laser, but I imagine it could go out at some point anyway because it's the old design.

Is it a new system they sell you, or a refurbished one?

For anyone that won LittleBigPlanet 2 from the Subway contest, I just received this email.

Thank you for participating in the Subway® Fiery Footlong Frenzy and congratulations on winning LittleBigPlanet™2. Unfortunately, the worldwide release of LittleBigPlanet™2 has been delayed.

Despite the shift in the worldwide release, please rest assured you will still receive LittleBigPlanet™2 before it hits stores! LittleBigPlanet™2 is currently scheduled for a January 18th release.

Thanks,

PrizeLogic Customer Support Team
Before it hits stores? I like the sound of that.

Thanks to Playstation Network for including a Holiday Dynamic theme for Playstation Plus members with today's update. Timing is everything.

Lead & Gold for "free" is pretty nice though.

Well, my friend got back to me. His friend is asking for $125 to fix my PS3. I'm gonna have to bite as there aren't much other options in Puerto Rico. Still, it's better than paying SOny $150 for some refurbished model, I suppose.

You getting any kind of a warranty on that? $125 sounds high compared to just having sony do it for $150 and at least you get some sort of warranty. Is your problem YLOD or the drive or something else?

Are there any free dynamic themes out there? Wouldnt mind getting one of those. How about turning the sound off a theme? I love my Joker AA but damn are the sounds annoying

Looks like you're five days too late for a free Sports Champions dynamic theme. Maybe someone has an extra code for one.

3 months, if I recall correctly. I'll verify before I plunk down the cash. I guess YLOD is my issue. The light briefly appears yellow when I power up my PS3, the unit makes several beeps, and then it flashes red.

Normally I'd get a new unit but there are some shows I downloaded from the PSN store that would get wiped from my hard drive if I isntall it in another PS3. And, although they were purchases, Sony does not honor them should they get deleted. :(

Yup that is the dreaded YLOD

It's being reported that the next PSN+ update includes Scott Pilgrim for $5. Great news for procrastinators like myself!

I wonder if they will ever add Skype functionality to the PS3? That would be nice as I have some family members that Skype but don't own PS3s.

So are you wanting to Skype with them from your PS3 or force them to get PS3s because of Skype?

So what causes the RROD on Xbox 360 and YLOD on the PS3? The answer is overheating and poor design of cooling and chip attachment to the motherboard. These two flaws combined have catastrophic results and kill the console over time. Both consoles are extremely powerful but have too small casings with poor ventilation and release of excess of heat. After playing your PS3 for few hours what happens is the temperature rises a point where the solder joints attaching the CPU and GPU chips to the motherboard liquefy and then solidify again once you switch the console off.

These heating cycles put stress on the solder joints and make them weaker and at a point, sooner or later one of the hundreds of solder joints breaks and the motherboard loses connection to the chip (either processor or graphical chip). At this point your PS3 will show the yellow light of death to notify you of the problem.

It is a general error code that occurs because of either one of the following:

1> The solder on the GPU and CPU crack. I would argue this is likely the case if it dies immediately when turning it on
2> The thermal paste is inadequate on the GPU and CPU and it is overheating. This is probably more the problem if it dies while doing something interesting like playing a game.
3> The power supply is toast. This is supposedly the much less likely case.

There are various instructions online on how to fix this which I was able to follow, so far successfully. It is fairly easy but will cost about $40 for a heat gun and quality thermal paste. If you have built computers before this job is pretty easy. You can check if it is a power supply problem by smelling it and if it smells burnt then it is possibly the problem, otherwise you would just need to do the refloat and reapply thermal paste.

If the guy who is repairing it actually repairs electronics and has the right equipment then he will certainly be able to do a better job, otherwise with the DIY heat gun method there is certainly a higher risk of the problem happening again because the refloat wasn't perfect. In that case you should just be able to do it again. I don't really know that 3 months is any better guaranty then what you might get by doing it yourself though and then at least you have the tools and knowledge to do it again.

I can Skype with them with my PS3 rather than my laptop and they can be on their computers. I would just like to have the second option. We use the video chat option frequently with the PS3 to chat with relatives living outside the U.S.

Thanks, guys. That explains alot. The answers I found online where of the "it could be anything" variety.

I don't yet have the confidence to do the fix myself so I'll check to see how well the guys knows his trade and probably plunk down the cash for him to do the fix.

$50 Amazon credit w/ 160GB PS3. $295 for the console.

http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-...YEV4755QZ57Q8C

Considering it comes with a controller worth $40, it's a pretty good fix for a YLOD. ;)

Every time there's a deal like this, I'm very tempted to get a second PS3.

I got the YLOD yesterday on my 80gb MGS4 PS3 and now I can't get the system to stay on for more than a few minutes before doing the same thing again. I use my PS3 for everything, my entire entertainment setup revolves entirely around it, so I can't go without a PS3.

So I did a quick search last night, and this is the deal I went with. I have been wanting a slim model for a while, but wasn't going to do it as long as my other one was up and running just fine. It already shipped out last night after I placed the order, and I'll have it tomorrow, so I wont be without one other than today.

I have taken a USB drive and grabbed the game saves I want to transfer from the bad PS3 to my new slim, so that is taken care of. What else needs to be done to smoothly transition from one PS3 to the other? Will I lose downloaded games I have purchased or do I simply log into my PSN account on the new one and redownload them again? Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks!

Decker 01-11-11 10:01 AM

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

You should transfer over your PSN ID as well as any others associated with the broken unit. Then if you're done with the old PS3, you should deactivate the accounts off of the old unit and activate them on the new unit.
You can go under "Account Management", find your Download History and download all your purchases over again.

make sure you de-authorize your unit for both PSN game downloads and videos - its 2 separate menu items.
