The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs
So I bought the PS3 slim today and was hoping to be able to transfer over my saved games from my now defunct fat PS3 (that I transferred over to my small personal hard drive) to my new slim.
It worked, as my saved games for things like Madden, GTA etc tranferred over fine. So I go to fire up the slim, load up my Madden franchise from the saved files off my fat PS3, and it says that the game data was saved by another user and can't be loaded.
I'm guessing this is the case when you try to continue one saved game from one PS3 to another new PS3?
Is there any way around it? My first thought was to save to a memory card, as I remember back in the Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PS2 days, a memory card with saves on it could be removed, taken to anyone else's system, loaded up, and played. Haven't used a memory card in years (don't know if they're really still around, actually), but am wondering if that could be a fix?
I'm especially trying to figure out how people get around this when your system breaks, you send it to Sony, and they ship you out a refurbished one. If the system doesn't recognize your saved games from your first PS3, are you always just SOL when you either buy a new system or receive a new one after your first broke down?

I'm pretty sure I've played games while it downloaded in the background as well.
PacMan, is you user name on the new machine the same as on the old one? I'm sure it probably is but that's the only advice I can offer.

Hmm...now I don't know. I just called one Costco store and she said they don't have lifetime warranty's for anything, except maybe the big electronic products. She said a PS3 would have a 90 warranty/return policy.
Update: Called a second Costco...he said there's not a lifetime return policy, but that there's sort of a undetermined amount of time that you can return it without any hassle should anything go wrong with it. He was vague about it, saying you couldn't return it 5 years from now, but that it's an open policy for, I guess, the foreseeable future. Just not forever. Or something.

Agreed. PacMan, if your old PS3 will still turn on, just do the system transfer utility. It will transfer everything from your old PS3 to the new one, including locked saves and even other accounts, if you have any. Make sure to disable your old PS3 in the PSN account settings.

Well the first Costco employee he spoke to was right. Costco has no lifetime warranty on anything, it's a satisfaction guarantee on a product. It's very strictly spoken (by the corporate office) that employees do not refer to the return policy as a lifetime warranty.

I've already pointed out in this very thread that it's not a warranty. That has nothing to do with my post though. There's no reason to call Costco about their policies when they're readily available in writing with just a few clicks.

On the topic of Costco, I was there tonight and saw some very cool "After glow" controllers for the PS3. It was a 2 pack for $40 and they were see-thru, and light up in either blue or green. I almost bought them and I noticed they were laid out like an XBox controller! Triggers were like XB and They had the D bad down were the stick is and the stick where the DPad is! I may have to get them if theyre covered by that "lifetime" guarantee.

the USB hub I've been using with my PS3 slim is starting to flake out and I stumbled upon this http://www.nyko.com/products/product...Media+Hub+Slim
Looks like this could be perfect since it integrates so well with the PS3. I already have the Nyko blu wave remote (I bought it since I have nice learning IR remote and basically just use it for the IR sensor) and I'm wondering if I might be able to get away with using just this (with it's built in IR sensor) without having to plug the little IR dongle into the PS3 to use with my remote (which again I learned the buttons from the Nyko bluwave). Even if it won't work without the dongle it seems like the most elegant solution for adding more USB ports to the slim.

Netflix on PS3 goes disc-free, gets 1080i streaming and 5.1 surround sound
Rejoice, PS3 owners, your Netflix streaming experience just got vastly better than anything else on the market. Starting October 18 Netflix on the PS3 will no longer require a disc, and it'll stream some content with 1080i resolution and / or 5.1-channel surround audio, while everyone else will be stuck with a max of 720p stereo for the time being. Oh, and you'll get subtitles on some content as well. Netflix is partnering with Dolby on the audio side, and the surround format will be Dolby Digital Plus, which is the same codec used by the VUDU HDX streaming service -- we're guessing it'll require a tiny bit more bandwidth but the results should sound pretty great. Netflix says 5.1 will come to other platforms "over time," so we'll see how long that takes -- and given that the PS3 is now disc-free and the company's eschewed the SRS surround features baked into its Silverlight-based platform, we're guessing Microsoft's exclusivity period has now completely run its course. Video and PR after the break.

Hopefully that functionality was included with one of the previous firmwares and it'll just be "flipped on".

I've actually been considering getting Netflix (never subscribed before) mainly so I can stream TV shows, so this is good timing for me. I'd rather use my PS3 for this than 360.
The $9 a month deal is all I need, right?

Yep. You might search around and see what they have before you commit. Might compare it to Hulu+ or something.

Anyone know how much bandwidth it would take up watching 1080i streaming (with 5.1) movies or shows? Comcast caps at 250 gigs a month.

Playstation Blog
"A quick update, we have received a new version of the application from Netflix and we’re happy to report that the PlayStation 3 app will support 1080p."
Q: I thought I read that this disc-less netflix was only coming to Plus subscribers. From the article, it doesn’t mention that. Is it for everyone who has a PS3? And is it free?
A: It’s for everyone.
