Cost. They can save a little on manufacturing and sell them separately to make more money. Plus, not everyone has the same connection needs. HDMI is preferred these days, but there are many people still using composite video connected to an SD TV. They include the one cable that just about anyone can use, even if it sucks these days.

Anyway, I played a little bit of Drake's tonight. I made it up to Chapter 3. So far I'm enjoying it. Hopefully I'll enjoy it more when I get the video hooked up properly tomorrow and can set my display to 1080 as God intended.
Bear in mind that most packaged games are 720p. Some games will scale to 1080p, but just like with the 360 it's not actually rendering in 1080p. There is some stuff on PSN that doesn't push the system as hard that is in 1080p, but this generation of games is 720p for the most part.

BTW, if you're planning on using component, you won't get 1080p for anything. You need HDMI for 1080p.

I'm not sure if i can ask for this here, but does anyone have a good custom cover that fits a blu-ray case for netflix? I have been looking to get one so that the collection can look better.

Good points all. The reality is that at heart, I am just a slack-jawed yokel who wants the games to fill the screen on my 16:9 TV. Plus, my TV only has one HDMI connection and I'm using that for the TiVo/cable. The next TV I buy will have HDMI inputs for TV, the 360, and the PS3/BD, but for now, I'm stuck with component.

Not necessarily. Before I got my new TV, I had one with a single DVI input (shudder). I bought, for $40 on Amazon, a little 3:1 HDMI switcher with remote and it worked great for my PS3, 360 and DVD player. It was powered by USB, so I just had it plugged into the back of the 360 for power. It even worked with my Harmony remote for activity marco functions. You should look into that. It was made by Joytech, I believe.

Yeah, even better, just get one from monoprice. An HDMI switcher that's it.

Also note that without HDMI, the PS3 (or 360 for that matter) won't upscale DVDs.

Or get yourself a sound system with multiple HDMI inputs. That's what I did. I only use one HDMI input to my TV, but everything goes HDMI to my sound system.

You really would be better off, for now, to switch your TIVO to component and use HDMI with your PS3. Nothing coming through your TIVO is native 1080p, but the PS3 is, at least for Blu-rays. Plus the aforementioned upscaling on DVDs.

There's a few amazing ones on the custom cover thread at blu-ray.com, but the creators won't send it to you unless you have been there 6 months, and I just joined last month

OK .. so now that I've got a PS3, can someone clue me in on what are the best games on PSN? I'm looking mostly for stuff I can't get on XBLA, although I'll take all recommendations.

I've heard great things about Flower -- that's definitely on my list. What else should I be looking for?

Flower is more artsy and shows off the graphics than it is a game IMO.

The pixel junk series is always good I believe those are ps3 only. I personally have all of them but racers and they are all highly recommended.

Pain is amazing if you have other people playing, the multiplayer is fun as hell. I took my ps3 to my friends house and even people who didn't like games were playing it and having loads of fun.

Trine is a pretty good platform game on PSN.

Man, that's a bad question to ask just weeks after pretty much all the good games have been discounted 50% as part of their Spring Sale. My favorites:
PixelJunk Monsters
Flower
Zen Pinball
WipEout HD (+ Fury expansion)
Trine
Super Stardust HD (+ single player expansion)

You might want to check out our Official PSN Games Thread for more insight.

The disc is temporary anyway. Are you really going to hold onto it after you download the app to the hard drive?

Who knows when sony is going to get around to it. The fact that they didn't just make it an installed app in the first place was short sighted enough that I have no faith they will ever get around to it.

"when sony is going to get around to it" = when Microsofts exclusive period ends. I'm guessing Novemeber.

That's the one original PSN game that's never been on sale. I'm still pretty sure it'll drop in price by 50% on one of these remaining Tuesdays in May during the final weeks of the Spring Sale. Don't buy it before then.

I would imagine the exclusive period is over or netflix would not have even been able to give us a disc as that would mean it's not exclusive. I highly doubt anything like that is what is stopping them from making an app.

You're right, Sony just wants to make your life a little harder,

MS had an exclusive an making Netflix part of the dashboard. That's why you have to have a disc now. Again, the rumor is that exclusivity ends in November. In case you hadn't noticed, the Wii has to have a disc for Netflix as well.

I was posting my thoughts, your snarky comment was not needed. You can take that right out of here.

Wow, sensitive much?

Did you really think Sony was just too lazy to add a shortcut on the XMB for Netflix that they asked Netflix to make us use a disc instead so we could be "inconvenienced"? It's been posted on here and all over the internet since Netflix was announced for the PS3 that MS had exclusivity on Netflix integration in the dashboard for now.

I put this in the Modnation beta thread but figured I'd post it here as well to keep drumming up interest for the game. So...
