A local place has a slim 120 GB for $200. I have some trade-ins so I'm going to do that. When I get the PS4, I'm going to pop the 500 GB HDD from that into the slim, and I have a spare 750 GB 7200 RPM HDD that I'm going to put in the PS4.

If that's new, it doesn't sound too bad. If it's used or a refurb, I'd probably stick with your original plan for the bundle...especially if you were going to get GTA anyway.

Hope I didn't give you bad advice on disk retrieval. FWIW, if it's red lighting, there's literally no way for them to know that you trashed the disk drive, as they can't power it up either and likely don't care anyway, as they don't refurb or resell them.

You could probably still send it in...unless you did some real damage.

I think the original PS3 fats are just as certain to die as the original 360s. It just took quite a bit longer.

I wouldn't give a second thought to sending that thing in.

I've got nothing for a hot water tank...probably looking at a $600-700 bill based on my experience with rental properties...just hope you can get a plumber over the weekend.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

The system was used but after the trade-ins it came to $125 (the $200 they quoted me was including tax, not pre-tax) and I actually wasn't planning on getting GTA otherwise. Plus now I have a replacement system today for less, versus waiting halfway through the month and paying more.

It will be a sad weekend for our bank account. Fortunately, I have a plumber in the family, not named Mario, and he is coming over in an hour or so to put in a new tank at a fraction of the labor cost of calling an outsider. The tank we are getting is a 30 gallon for about 360 plus tax. As far as the PS3s breaking I have been getting a bit concerned about one of my two slims as it seems to be running a bit louder than I'm used to.

That's a lucky break on the water heater.

Sucks that it went out on you, but they have a life expectancy just like anything else.

Slims run pretty cool, but they are pretty easy to open up and clean if you're worried.

Should have tried the hair dryer trick before cracking it open if you were going to scrap it anyway. Then you could have sold or traded it. I sold mine for parts (with the full disclaimer that it was YLOD and did not work) for about 40 bucks.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

Need a little help with my ps3. Barely use it for games, mostly for blu rays.

Have a 40gb. I understand you don't get the full, so it is at 37gb.

I decided to clean up a bit before GTAV comes out. Deleted games, games saved data, and bluray data. Ps3 is now at 26gb/37gb. Where the heck is the other 11gb at? Can't be from all the updates, can it?

My assumption is that's the size of the OS. So 40GB HD formats technically to 37, and then the OS takes up another 11GB. Leaving you with a functional 26GB left.

Did you delete Games, Game Data, and Save Data? There are 3 separate things. Games and Game Data take up the most space. Save Game Data is small.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

The three places I deleted things from...

Game data utility
Saved data utility
Bd data utility

Those are the only places I found that pertained to games or movies. Bd data utility had a folder within it that had a bunch of weird file names. Folder was Shared Cache Data, didn't delete, because have no clue what it was.

Do you have any downloaded PSN games? Under the Games tab, games that you installed go there, select it, press triangle, and then select delete. That would include demos.

Also, check under Videos, if you've ever downloaded any Video demos or bought any movies.

Nope, never downloaded anything. Being a collector, I refuse to. So I have no idea what these missing gb could be.

It's almost certain that the same HDD will work in the PS4, though I don't think I've seen absolute confirmation of what physical size the PS4 SATA drive is.

I'd keep the PS3 for Blu, and there are still some great exclusives coming out for it this year.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

I just put some SquidGrips on my controller. They make it much easier to hold onto. Two adhesive pieces that only cover the grips. Not magic. Don't make the grips any longer.
