Really? It hasn't gotten the YLOD just yet but my 40gb did a few months ago so of course I have been paranoid.

I'm thinking about buying a PS3, and then getting essentially $160 in free gift cards. And then using those gift cards and buying another PS3, and getting another $160 in gift cards, using my coupon and the store promotion. Then I return the original PS3, along with the two gift cards I got from the second PS3, and I essentially get a PS3 for $140 + tax. Does my math sound right?

I know this sounds like I'm sort of screwing Target, but the free $160 in gift cards still goes back into the store, just not as an additional purchase.
How did you get the 100 dollar coupon?

they'll need a reason to take it back, and I don't think you're afraid its going to break is acceptable; so its up to your own conscience as to what reason you give them. You'll need to return any accessories/games that came with your bundle also.

Why would you have that feeling? Costco will absolutely take it back, especially if it fails by no fault of your own. I wouldn't recommend returning it before it breaks simply out of paranoia, because that's bordering on taking unfair advantage of the return policy, but I wouldn't worry about taking it back if it does fail. That's the whole point of their lifetime return policy.

Uhh..I didn't imply or say I was doing this. I was just commenting on how I was surprised Costco would even take stuff back after 2 years.

Anyway, paranoid cause my 40 bit the dust around the 2 year mark and this one's 2 year is coming up soon.

Both of my 60's bit the dust just after their two year marks.

I'm brand-new to the PS3, having just bought one at Christmas. Can someone explain to me why these expensive high-end systems are dying within a year or two? Pretty sure my N64 and other older consoles are still alive and kicking, so what makes these more susceptible to RRODs and YLOD?!

Hotter temperatures and moving parts, basically.

From the EU psblog

ayStation Network will undergo routine maintenance today, between 16:00 BST and 00:00 BST. If you wish to play online during the maintenance, please ensure you sign in to PSN before 16:00.

The latest information I have on PlayStation Store is that we are aiming to have it live by the end of May. Contrary to popular rumours, it will not be reopening tomorrow but we will let you know here as soon as the date is confirmed.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by this essential maintenance.

I can't speak for the YLOD, but the failing Blu-ray laser in the PS3 has nothing to do with how well you take care of it. The laser in my 40GB failed after two years of minimal use (~100 hours) on an open shelf in a temperature-controlled, air-purified room. And my experience is not unique. The lasers seem to just fail randomly, with no correlation to firmware updates, specific games/movies, or hardware usage.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

My original NES died with a pampered life (video started jittering), and my SNES died too (power failure), but as far as I know all of my systems since then are still operational, including my heavily used launch 60GB PS3. I should break out my late 90s era systems and verify they still work (3DO, Jaguar/CD, PS1, Dreamcast).

Sonys E3 event will be 5 hours.

Over the past few years, E3 press conferences have evolved, increasingly ditching dry sales talks that only an investor would enjoy and embracing the flashy, sometimes star studded, show that a game reveal truly deserves. Each year, Sony has managed to wow fans with huge surprises and breathtaking trailers, all packed into a couple of hours. This year, Sony will be doing something different, due to the huge number of games that are sure to be covered, and a major focus on the NGP, their E3 event will last a record breaking five hours. First up is the conference, and then there’ll be a special event afterwards.

Starting at 5PM (PST) on June 6th, the show will continue all the way until 10PM.

Actually it's a ninety minute presentation -- the first three and a half hours will be used for downloading the mandatory system update.

So it's 90-120 minutes of public conference and then it's 3 hours of closed-door, but reportable, press demos? Nintendo did that with the 3DS a year ago at some event.

No way will the "stream" be 5 hours.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

I just got an e-mail about the identity theft offer:

Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment have made arrangements with Debix to offer AllClear ID PLUS to eligible PlayStationŽNetwork and Qriocity account holders in the United States who are concerned about identity theft.

AllClear ID PLUS is a premium identity protection service that uses advanced technology to deliver alerts to help protect you from identity theft. The service also provides identity theft insurance coverage and hands-on help from expert fraud investigators.

Sony has arranged, at no charge to eligible PlayStationŽNetwork and Qriocity account holders, for twelve months of this service to be provided by Debix to those who choose to enroll. In order to be eligible, account holders must be residents of the United States with active accounts as of April 20, 2011.

If interested, please submit your email address by June 28, 2011, at 11:59:59 PM CST at: us.playstation.com/news/consumeralerts/identity-theft-protection.

Please note, you must enter the same email address used to register your PlayStationŽNetwork or Qriocity account. Once your email address is validated, you will be sent your AllClear ID PLUS activation code.

And don't forget to cancel at the end of the free period or get charged for another year of service. No thanks. I'll just use PSN point cards from now on.
