I should break out my late 90s era systems and verify they still work (3DO, Jaguar/CD, PS1, Dreamcast).
My launch PS1 had to be played upside down after Resident Evil 1 came out and somehow the laser went crazy. This seemed pretty widespread, but never really addressed by Sony. My launch PS2 stopped playing CD-based games, which was also a seemingly widespread problem that never really got addressed. My launch PS3 still works, but I replaced it recently just in case. I did buy it from costco at launch (for a lot of money) but I'm not sure I'm going to return it when it eventually breaks, since that seems really skeevy. |

So I went ahead and bought a PS3. Now I just need some games. Question about that. Do PS3 games come on Blu-ray discs? Or I guess more specifically, do they have the protective scratch-resistant coating that Blu-ray discs have? Obviously I'm looking into buying games on the secondary market, and I don't want to stress too much about whether a game I buy is going to be in poor condition or not.

Nice, thanks.

You will be fine with used games.

Nice, I'll check it out. Any games that might be in that price point that are worth a purchase?

Borderlands is 14.99 which is well worth the price but the GOTY is only 17.99 used at gamestop so i wouldn't suggest getting it at BB unless it's part of the b1g1. Bioshock 2 is 10 bucks and is well worth it also.

I wouldn't buy a used GOTY version of Borderlands unless you're sure that it's the version with the DLC on disc. The early versions just had DLC vouchers, which would be no good if someone already used them.
Good Spoiler:
Bad Spoiler:
Just make sure it doesn't say voucher on the front and you are good. |

Just have to be diligent and look at the front of the case, it will say if it's a voucher or disc.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I wanna complain about my dead PS3 some more.
If my PS2 ever died, my game saves were still fine and dandy on the save-card. But now, I'm pretty much screwed because you can't do anything with a dead PS3 and it's hard-drive is fucking encrypted. Seriously, what a retarded step backwards for a next-gen system. Who thinks of these "innovations"? |

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
That's a lot of busy-work to keep backing up your saves each time you play a game, just in case your PS3 goes belly up. And yeah, there's plenty of games you can't even do that with. Thank God the 360 has that detachable hard-drive or I would've been exponentially more fucked when that red-ringed.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I understand your frustration, but remember that this time the storage medium can contain things they definitely don't want transferred, like games and movies. It would be nice if they had separated the drive into two partitions, one encrypted for their software and the other open for saves.

"They"? Fuck them! I'm their customer here who's paid good money for a bunch of their shit. I'm not trying to cheat or steal anything from anyone. And yet I'm the one getting screwed because of the measures they've put in place to prevent such things, which the thieves circumvent anyways...

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Well, regardless, they should offer some sort of deal where I can send my old hard-drive with my new PS3 to Sony, and for a nominal fee, have them transfer the contents over.
|
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
You can have full games and videos on the xbox hard drive as well, and those protected things just won't work if its hooked up to another system.
|
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
 DRM doesn't require hard drive encryption.
It's really inexcusable. Somehow Microsoft figured out a way to protect their content and make the hard drives portable. Are they behind the curve? |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Looks like we may actually be getting close with the store returning. On my way to going to Netflix I noticed there are newer movies being displayed on the Playstation store panel under video.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
^ it was still doing that last month, and still no store.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
When the store do get back you can expect to see servers overload by everyone trying to download the free games. I probably should waited out for a couple of days for me to download my free games. I be getting Wipeout HD and Super Stardust HD.
