EW Jim was one of my favorites back in the day and this one controls exactly as it did back in the day. All this is, is a HD makeover, with a couple new levels thrown in and obviously the Multiplayer stuff. Otherwise the controls and sound are the exact same as I remember them. The graphics are prettier obviously and for me, I don't have a Wii for Virtual console, so it was an easy decision for $10 to pick this up and enjoy the game again.

It didn't control well back then, it was a hard platformer back then and it seems they've kept it the same for this release.

For me personally it's great.

I'd say it's hard to compare this to Splosion man, as Splosion is a brand new game. It was developed for now, etc. EW Jim HD is again just a polishing of an old game.

Well, if their objective was to update a badly dated, poorly controlling, badly animated, frustratingly imprecise platformer with bad sound and framerate issues to now include sharper ugly graphics, I say "Mission Accomplished!". Consider this turd now sufficently polished.

(I think that may be my most Yatzee-like post ever.)

--the XBLA In Brief guy likes it a lot as well. It would seem to be a very faithful port of the original game. I guess I just don't "get it". I'll play an old Sonic or Mario game any day of the week, but this one gave me a headache.

Understandable, it just is what it is for lack of a better way of putting it. I'm glad it wasn't a Summer title, as it would have been a let down for a lot of people I'm sure. I don't have my genesis anymore so for $10 it's a nice little distraction for myself.

Yeah..the weeks leading up to it were jam packed...MTG, Battlefield 1943, Monkey Island.

As per usual, I probably already have 80% or more of those (actually 12/19, not counting Portal). I'll pick up Banjo Tooie at least. I'll check out the PG demo as well.

Nope, that's why I said I'll have to look it up. I loved the old PC one (hex map, turned based strategy game). I played the hell out of that and Fantasy General back in the day. Yeah, reading the review now doesn't look like it would be that great, especially as I'm sure nobody I know has it.

Interesting... I may just have to pick up General Panzer.

edit: I played and enjoyed the demo but it is slow. More a board game than a video game. The instructions were also kind of complex imo for a demo.

Looks like I'm downloading some demos tonight!

I sure wish there was a way to re-gift arcade titles or something though. I was cruising through my library last night, and games like Space Giraffe? Ugh. Terrible.

That's a good question. I don't know, to be honest. Same goes for Tron. If I'd played the demo and heard the shitty way the music was emulated, there's no way in hell I would have bought that.

When that game came out I would leave the demo on when I wasn't playing so it looked to all my friends that I was playing it all the time. Then in RB1 I made my character all fucked up and made a Space Giraffe shirt and had this sweet ass guitar with "POD GET" on it and I would go online looking for people to play. In for Banjo Tooie--been waiting for a deal on that one forever. Weird that they wouldn't put Banjo Kazooie on sale at the same time. Been waiting on that, too. Also in for Contra for $3.

May be in for Castlevania: SOTN and Castle Crashers, too.

Looks like I might be picking up a 1600 point card in my near future for Castle Crashers and Vandal Hearts. I would also pick up Castlevania, but I am waiting for the Konami compilation disc to drop to around $10 (cause if available, I rather have the disc). Looks like a great list of sales. Curious question...for Crystal Defenders, has anybody actually played it ?(and if so what did you think? :D)

"As hinted by the ESRB -- and predicted on our Xbox E3 Bingo card, Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi, two of Sega's standout games for its dearly departed Dreamcast, will be released on PS3 and Xbox 360. But they're just the first Dreamcast titles.

Sega announced that those two games will be available this fall in North America and Europe, calling them the "first two classics" to be released as part of Sega's plan to republish Dreamcast games on PSN and XBLA. The games will include improved resolution, surround sound, and modern amenities like online leaderboards, Achievements, and Trophies."

Twisted Pixel folks just confirmed that you will be able to unlock 'Splosion Man DLC by playing Comic Jumper.

Why not just go for the 4,000 points for $35 deal at Dell right now?

Behemoth gave you Alien Hominid for Castle Crashers just by having a save file of the former. They've mentioned something about Battleblock bonuses in the same way.

I wonder if Twisted Pixel is bringing 'Splosion Man into Comic Jumper or vice versa? It sounds like in 'Splosion Man, but it could be read as DLC for Comic Jumper.

We knew Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project was coming to Xbox Live Arcade, we just didn't realize it would be this soon. The remake of the Contra-style 2D game will arrive on June 23 and will set you back $10.

Here's the official PR blurb:

E3 2010: Comic Jumper Preview
This may be the only game where the developer comes to rescue the hero.
We've been keeping a close eye on Comic Jumper, the next game from the developers of 'Splosion Man, since it was unveiled earlier this year. But today we finally got a chance to play and spend some quality time with it.

Captain Smiley is a comic book superhero and he has the coolest ringtone. I can't play the ringtone for you, but trust me -- it's the coolest. Throughout the game Smiley will travel through four different comics, each with its own visual style and audio design. Exactly why he is doing this and how isn't clear, yet. We've got the E3 demo, which only lets us play a portion of the first three comics: The Adventures of Captain Smiley, Nanoc the Obliviator, and Improbable Paper Pals.

Smiley's own comic is a slick, Image Comics-style book. Nanoc the Obliviator is a send-up of the Conan comics from the 1970s. Paper Pals is drawn in the style of the Silver Age of Comic Books, which covers the mid-1950s to about 1970. Think early Superman and Batman.

The fourth comic, which is unfortunately locked out of our E3 demo, is a black and white manga book. From footage we've seen in Comic Jumper trailers, this is one of the most interesting levels in the game. It seems to be filled with cute anime girls and general Japanese weirdness, things we tend to be big fans of.


Within each comic there are thrilling scenes when Captain Smiley jumps from one panel to another. It's an impressive sight as he soars above the book and the camera pans around him in slow motion.

Comic Jumper features a mix of gameplay styles, from run-and-gun Contra stuff to on-rails shooting and quicktime events. In the first level you go from a side-scrolling beat 'em up, to sliding down a steep hill in a scene very reminiscent of Gunstar Heroes, to an over-the-shoulder quicktime event following Smiley as he crashes through a series of doors. There are many nods to popular retro games, such as the very Mega Man way Smiley explodes when defeated.

The Space Harrier-style on-rails shooting sections are a nice change of pace, but in this demo version you can't invert the aiming -- a big problem for inverted gamers like myself. Hopefully that option will be included in the final version, so Captain Smiley doesn't end up waving the aiming reticule all over the screen like a drunken idiot. "Reader bonuses" tend to pop up during these sections, which are a chance to earn money if you impress the readers by not taking any damage. Smiley seems to be motivated by cash.

Jokes come fast and furiously in Comic Jumper, and not all of them hit. I'd say more hit than miss, though, and there are plenty moments when I LOL'd. This is probably the only videogame with a Dick Cheney joke in it. Your first boss encounter is against Smiley's arch nemesis, a buff bodybuilder named Brad. Brad comes pumping his own theme song, and it's pretty great.

Captain Smiley arrives in the Silver Age of Comics.

Here's one of the craziest bits: for his special attack, Captain Smiley can call upon his developers, Twisted Pixel, to pound the screen with their fists, feet, and foreheads, decimating all enemies onscreen. Really. You can expect other cool meta extras, like free unlockable 'Splosion Man levels.

'Splosion Man is a tough act to follow, but Comic Jumper is looking impressive. It's got a likeable, funny protagonist, several visually distinct worlds to jump through, and nods to classic games of yore. From what I've seen so far, it looks like Twisted Pixel is having an absolute blast making it.

Now, we really want to see that manga level.
