Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

IGN's preview of Castlevania : Harmony of Dispair. Wow, it's NOT what I was expecting and actually sounds far less interesting to me than had it just been a new 2D Castlevania title.
Spoiler:

We just played a couple games of Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, the new six-player Castlevania game coming to Xbox Live Arcade this summer. Harmony of Despair is a 2D side-scrolling Castlevania that looks quite similar to the post-Symphony of the Night games we've been playing on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS for years. Apart from its looks, though, this is a pretty unique spin on the Castlevania formula. It's designed as a co-op game for up to six players that works like raids in World of Warcraft.

There are six levels, each guarded by a boss that must be hunted down and murdered. The maps are expansive, full of traps, shortcuts, and dead ends. Here's the thing: these levels and bosses are designed to be attempted many times over. Not only are the bosses powerful, but you only have 10 minutes to find them. You are more than likely to fail the first couple times you try. Luckily, you retain all the items and monies you collect on a "raid." So the formula goes: try a level, fail, buy and equip better items, and make it a little farther next time. You don't earn experience points and level up your character, but you are constantly finding new items and earning money that can buy you cool stuff. The next time you try that level, you'll be better equipped for it.

The Symphony of the Night-style Castlevania games are typically very pretty 2D affairs, and Harmony of Despair is no different.

The more players you have the easier it will be to complete each level, but you can always fly solo if that's more your style (or if you're just unpopular). Five characters are available to choose from, each pulled from a previous Castlevania game. Alucard, from Symphony of the Night, is bound to be a popular choice. Shanoa, from Order of Ecclesia, is another option I noticed. Each character behaves as they would in their own game. Shanoa, for instance, can use her magnetic abilities to cling to certain hooks in the environment and gain access to new areas. The character you choose will determine the path you take to the boss. But they all have the same core abilities like slide, double jump, and backwards dash. Yes, with only five characters, you will be playing with twins in a six-player game.

On my first try playing level one I ran around looting treasure chests and slicing up familiar skeleton enemies (I was Alucard). But I ended up running into a dead end and time ran out before I could make it to the boss. On my second try I had a better idea of where to go and eventually came face to face with the guardian: a two-legged, no-armed behemoth that shoots a giant laser and sprays poisonous blood. There is a nice bit of foreshadowing in this level, as you can see the laser blast piercing through the halls of the castle long before you reach the boss. When you whittle the boss's health down enough the floor will cave in and you'll plummet to a platform below – where a mess of enemies await. The whole gang was too much for me to handle and I met my second demise. This is where more players would come in handy. It's also possible to make it to the monster party ahead of time and clear out the enemies so that when you fall down with the boss it doesn't have any henchmen left.

http://xboxlivemedia.ign.com/xboxliv...1276567286.jpg
Now you don't have to venture into Dracula's spooky ass castle alone.

To get your bearings and plan your route through a level, you can zoom way, way out. You'll be able to see all enemies and other players in the castle, but you're so small on the screen it's probably not possible to play this way. Each level will have a few special areas where you can switch your equipment, but you'll need to do it fast because the clock won't stop counting down. Enemies won't stand around waiting for you to finish, either.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is a fun new take on this long-running franchise and we can see why Microsoft picked it to be included in Summer of Arcade. Summer of Arcade starts in July so you won't have to wait long to posse up and go after those bosses.

To be fair, that wasn't actually my prediction but just relaying news. I didn't put any further thought into it. I definitely would have Limbo in it and maybe Lara Croft (if I remembered it), but none of the others. Comic Jumper and Puzzle Quest would have been in there for sure, though.

You did have Limbo in it. And none of the others. :)

Agreed.

Being a multi-player co-op pretty much means I'll never play it - which is to bad since it's gameplay and assets look really good.

I wonder if it would sell better it were it not multi-player focused.

Super disappointed in Castlevania "HD". Seriously? They're calling recycled sprites from the GBA/DS titles (hell, there's Rondo sprites in there even) HD?

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

The recycled graphics don't bother me, it's the whole focused six-player co-op and 10 minutes to find a boss gameplay that makes me completely uninterested in this game. It's a shame, because I love all of the Metroidvania type games.

I had already made up my mind that this would be an instant purchase for me as soon as I read its name in the list of upcoming titles. Love Symphony of the Night and most of the DS Castlevania titles.

Now that I see it's multiplayer focused, no thanks.

Yeah, after reading that I will pass.

I'm probably not buying any of the summer of arcade titles. Hydro Thunder looks cool, but I can wait for a sale. Monkey Island 2 is my only first day buy right now and maybe Puzzle Quest 2, but I think I will get that on DS first.

Trials HD

I've kept the demo of this on my HDD since it first was released. I play it from time to time and have fun doing so. I can totally see how this game could get really frustrating during the hard/extreme levels. Now that it is on sale again, I'm finally leaning towards picking up the full game.

How frustrating/difficult do the later levels get? Is it "controller throwing" frustrating or more like "one more try and I know I can do it" frustrating? Either way, is it definitely worth a pick up?

Thanks

Some kid on Twitter just implied that Plants vs Zombies is hitting XBLA on the 30th of June. Is that right and I missed a memo?

It's both kinds of frustrating, but it's still worth getting.

Picked up ALL of the DOTW games (what the hell, had a lot of points in my account). Will probably be in for a few of the other discounted ones tomorrow as well.

Even if you get frustrated by the included tracks, there are hundreds of user-made tracks available also. The user tracks all have difficulty levels too, so you can just grab as many medium difficulty tracks as you can find. There are a lot of good user-made tracks available.

Really? I thought you can only download levels made by your online Friends. Do they have a LBP-like sharing system now? I'm just about certain that wasn't the case before.

It is still friends-only, but there are people that act as distribution centers of sorts, so you just send them a request, get what you want, and then drop them. TrialsHD.net or the (shudder) Gamefaq Trials-specific board are decent places to find usernames of people who are sharing.

I wonder why Trials chose to do it that way. A level sharing system like LBP would increase the replay value a lot. As it is now, I've only had access to about 5 user created levels.

Probably a storage issue. This way, they don't have to store anything.

As posted above it is definitely both kinds. However, this game really keeps you coming back and no matter how frustrating it is very enjoyable to play. I typically don't like really hard games, but I love Trials and as bad as I am I was able to do decent on even the Hard tracks. The Extreme to me were unplayable, but there are only a few of those if you want to skip them. Well worth $7.

After weeks of trying I finally unlocked all the tracks and the mini bike and I've been replaying all the tracks with it.

Sounds like a port of the iPhone game... and I'm totally fine with it. :D

Alright, I’m having a tough time trying to decide between Trials HD & Shadow Complex. I know they are totally different games, but which one should take longer to get through and has a higher replay value?

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

I won 800 points from the basketball thing yesterday as well.

I would think Trials HD has a higher replay value, *if* you're the kind of person who wants to replay the courses and try to 'perfect' your time. Coincidentally I just restarted Shadow Complex; not because I wanted to but because I got stuck and couldn't figure out how to get back to where I was supposed to be (disadvantage to single save slots). I only own SC, because I don't like replaying courses multiple times to gain half a second improvement.

Castlevania: online or offline co-op or both? Not sure about this one.
Saw a video for Comic Jumper, I'll definitely have to check it out.

How can you have an "Inventory Blowout" sale for digital content?
This is sad, but I don't think I want any of the sale titles for this week, except *maybe* Bomberman since my boy likes it. [I do already have Castle Crashers, GW2, Magic, and Portal on Orange Box; I didn't like Vandal Hearts and Record of Agarest War will do me for my SRPG, and I couldnt stand Zombie Apocalypse.]

"Get "[Splosion Man] half-off while you can so that you can play the FREE DLC that comes with @Comic_Jumper". Not sure if this was finalized, I'm reading randomly, but to me this sounds like purchase of CJ does give you additional content for SM. "Buy new game, get more stuff for old game" is a little unusual, normally it's "buy new game, get stuff for future new game".

I think Limbo's the only "summer of arcade" game I'm getting - and even that is dependent on reviews and word of mouth.
