I think you could write a pretty simple conversion routine to convert all possible button combinations to one of the new chord styles. Rock Band 3 did that for Pro Drums using animation cues, for God's sake.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread
Eurogamer asked.
"It's not 2010 any more," Jackson said. "There are not many other games that let you use stuff you bought back then in their games now. The difference with this is, it's completely different gameplay. So, quite simply, the DLC you bought just won't work. The guitar is different. The way we've presented it is different.

You want to play your old DLC? Get a submarine.
Seriously, though, that comment is hilarious, considering the message from Rock Band is entirely different.

Yeah I never invested heavily in GH DLC either. But still, the way all these guys answer that question with "Guh, just launch your old shit into the sun already, this is new, can't you get that?"... it's like there's a class on this.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread
Only GH DLC I ever actually paid for was stuff that I knew was compatible across several GH games: The Metallica Death Magnetic album, and whatever disc imports were available. I can play all that stuff in GH5, but I haven't even bothered to play that in at least a year or two.

This is going to bomb so, so hard. Rock Band needs to come out before this though, or at least have a heavy marketing campaign, or I think Guitar Hero is going to take it down with the submarine.
That first person view seems annoying as fuck, and motion sickness inducing. Not to mention, who the fuck is busy watching the stuff in the background while playing? I'd think any spectators would prefer to just see a normal band view. Also, live action footage? What is this, Sega CD?
Oh, and guitar only? No drums, yeah, nope...
This is fucking hilarious too...
So not only is it going to be "dumbed down" for last-gen hardware, but MOBILE too!? Wow... just wow. After reading this, now it's making sense on why they are using live action footage.

While the game is coming to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, the full experience (including the same guitar) is also coming to tablets and smartphones. The mobile version of the game can either be played on the device or a television.

flash, can't you see the future? You pair your tablet with the console (via web "room code"*) and you can drum on it! No need for extra hardware!

I can't wait. I hope it supports the camera on the phone so I can put MYSELF in the game too!

If there's one thing that needed the power of next gen, it's scrolling notes on a screen!

I haven't read much on this, but is it Free-to-Play or something? I mean, I get that a Sega CD emulator takes a little work, but I figured they'd just use one that's already developed.

I was speaking more to the connectivity of the systems compared to the previous gen. Or if the game had some actual graphics and not a bunch of douchebags running around in front of a green screen.

What connectivity differences are there between generations that would dumb down the game? I figured you were being somewhat sarcastic, as to me a music rhythm game is one of the genres that hardly matters what generation platform it's on, which made it funny to me.

Here are 24 songs you’ll be able to mangle when Guitar Hero comes back
Guitar Hero: Warriors Of RockGuitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock

FreeStyle Games announced last month that it is bringing back Guitar Hero after a four-year hiatus, raising questions of whether the company had purposefully waited until all but the most devoted fans of the previous games had thrown away their old controllers to re-launch the franchise. (If so, kudos on making us all buy them again, FreeStyle. Very savvy.)
The new game, called Guitar Hero Live, will make a few improvements on the old model—it changes the configuration on the controller from one row of five buttons to two rows of three, for example, in order to more closely mimic a real guitar and eliminate excuses from shamefaced musicians who claim, “This thing is throwing me off.” It will also replace the alterna-Sims who awkwardly swayed along to players’ previous attempts at rock godhood with bandmates and audience members played by human actors, so real people can boo at you when you give up halfway through “Through The Fire And Flames.” If Guitar Hero doesn’t shame you, you’ll never learn, apparently.
Speaking of, Rolling Stone has released an initial list of 24 songs that will be featured on the new game, and while Dragon Force’s notoriously difficult song from Guitar Hero III isn’t on the list, a few returning favorites are—like The Killers’ “When You Were Young,” marking the song’s fourth appearance in a music game. As might be expected, the list reflects the fact that people haven’t stopped making music since 2011, even if a few of the choices (looking at you, Skrillex) are tangentially associated with guitar-playing at best. Of course, Guitar Hero Live will also feature a streaming mode, “Guitar Hero TV,” where players can play along with music videos of their choice, which is good news for people who refuse to pretend their plastic ax is actually a plastic banjo in order to play The Lumineers.
Guitar Hero Live initial set list
The Black Keys - “Gold On The Ceiling”
Blitz Kids - “Sometimes”
Ed Sheeran - “Sing”
Fall Out Boy - “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)”
Gary Clark, Jr. - “Don’t Owe You A Thang”
Green Day - “Nuclear Family”
The Killers - “When You Were Young”
The Lumineers - “Ho Hey”
My Chemical Romance - “Na Na Na”
Pierce The Veil - “King For A Day (feat. Kellin Quinn)“
The Rolling Stones - “Paint It Black”
Skrillex - “Bangarang”
The War On Drugs - “Under The Pressure”
Black Veil Brides - “In The End”
Rage Against The Machine - “Guerrilla Radio”
Judas Priest - “Breaking The Law”
Pantera - “Cowboys From Hell”
Sleigh Bells - “Bitter Rivals”
System Of A Down - “Chop Suey!”
Alter Bridge - “Cry Of Achilles”
Alt-J - “Left Hand Free”
Broken Bells - “Leave It Alone”
Red Hot Chili Peppers - “Higher Ground”
The Pretty Reckless - “Going To Hell”
