This wouldn't be a band battle, but rather a solo player tackling the song with different instruments. So, for example, a total score could be comprised of expert guitar, medium vocals, and easy drums.
That's a good idea. Everyone has a weakness and this could be a way to balance things out.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

That's not a bad idea. I don't want it to seem like I was complaining that I didn't win either. I just realized that I had decent scores and was surprised at the discrepancy. I went to scorehero and found out that if you'd played both those songs on bass your max score would have been ~280k with a 100% FC and perfect SP utilization. I only did one on bass (I thought we still had to use two different instruments) and scored decently but had a total score less than half the winner which is crazy. I guess having an expert vocalist in your band is the way to get the 1 million achievement.

On a somewhat related note, how does RB calculate gold star (or any star) value? I missed one note and had pretty good SP usage on You Oughta Know and didn't gold star it. In fact, very few people on scorehero have gold starred it. You could very easily FC it and not gold star it which just seems crazy to me.

Man, I want to play KZ2 but you keep forcing me to put RB back in so I can unlock these songs to play them. Yes I'm aware there's a code, but I'm not a cheater

Gold stars are calculated as 1.4675x the 5 star cutoff.

The GS cutoff on You Oughta Know Bass is 136,346.

How do you not have everything unlocked by now? I thought you were a pretty proficient plastic guitar player, and had this since release?

I don't have everything unlocked either. A good 90% of the time i play i just pop in Quickplay and end up playing DLC.

plus Alabama Getaway is the only song that needs to be unlocked, and its not that far out, assuming you're using RB2 to play RB1 songs.

I just re-unlocked everything this past week, after replacing my PS3 a couple months ago. took about 8 hours total spread over 3 nights. used the Marathon challenges...

No, I only got it about 2 months ago. I'm just going through the normal Tour and playing a few songs every now and then. I do admit, I get a little tired of playing the same songs over and over again (i.e. Mystery Setlist, win a Bus Set List, songs on their own, etc... lots of repetition ) so that slows my progress. I had to unlock both Lump and You Oughta Know for last weeks challenge

Interesting. The top score on bass is 140k so if you miss one note a gold star is impossible (because the bass multiplier goes up to 6x and you'd lose at least 5k points I think). I guess that makes gold starring things on bass much harder than on guitar.

Challenges seem to be the fastest way to unlock songs. I'm currently going through *ALL* of the challenges solo. I've done several of the infinite ones (80+ song sets). The great thing about those is you can save in the middle of them and come back and finish them off another day.

I submitted my scores for this challenge. Although, I don't think Drums are going to stand much of a chance against Guitar, I bet the scores for both Alabama Getaway and Clouds Over California would be much higher on Guitar. No biggie, I'm having fun with these challenges, it at least gives me a bit more of a reason to try for a higher score. I also enjoy reading the stats at the end of each challenge.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

Yeah I like these side challenges a lot. It makes me want to try harder on the guitar and drums! It also makes me revisit songs I've probably played only once in the course of the games regular modes.

Being a vocal player, I only get the DLC for songs that I'm familiar with. I'm hoping once I get better at drums/guitar I'll start getting a lot more DLC.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

What a frustrating day on XBL. Everyone I hooked up with picked 'impossible' songs like Dream Theater, Metallica, Megadave, etc... and played on expert, only to fail and drop out on me mid-song. I didn't get to play one song in it's entirety in 45 minutes. Very frustrating.

That download queue thing is kinda cool. I'd seen people mention it before, but hadn't tried it until now. I'll definitely use it again.

It is cool, but it can also be a curse. After queuing up The Kids Aren't Alright (which I want to go home and play right now!) and Losing My Religion, I also went back a few weeks and queued up Sweetness. I hadn't intended on that, but I couldn't help myself.

I love the queue. Like pinata said though, I'm more likely to buy stuff this way than browsing the marketplace. In fact, since the site launched I haven't bought a single item the old fashioned way(marketplace or RB store).

I see you also have to be careful to not repurchase something you've already gotten in a pack.

I'm surprised by the popularity rankings. I wonder how accurate that is. It looks like the 250 premium Rock Band 2 theme outsold pretty much every Pixies song and a few Who tracks.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

Yeah, you need to be aware of how songs are packaged, but that's a limitation of the marketplace. Harmonix tries to alleviate that through their custom Music Store in the game itself.

I think the popularity rankings have a lot to do with recent weeks, rather than overall sales.

Re: Rock Band: Official Thread

Here's a stupid question that I can't answer myself:

I'm about to combine all my stupid playlists on my ipod (RB1 Main, RB1 Bonus, RB2, DLC) into one general Rock Band one and wonder how I should order the songs. Currently the DLC one is just by release date, but the others are in difficulty (band, I think, not guitar).

Date seems the easiest as new files will go to the bottom by default, I just don't know if that makes the most sense for this type of playlist. I don't want to do it by artist or title or anything as that's boring.

I told you it was stupid.

Order the songs by decade/release date of the actual song and then put it on shuffle

Make the first 10-25 your favorites and after that just random and/or use shuffle.
