I don't think the level cap is all that relevant. You'll be fairly overpowered by the end of the game no matter what you do.

I'd say just play the regular game and see how much you like it. If you're hooked by the 5-10 hour mark, go for the DLC or wait for the GOTY edition.

fox & chess, thanks for the responses.

One other quick question...if you have the DLC and haven't finished the regular game, does it tell you when you are playing DLC? How do you know?

If you start up the game with the DLC for the first time and you've left Vault 101, you will pick up 3 new radio signals (for Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt and Mothership Zeta), plus a map marker for the Riverboat Landing (for Point Lookout). You also get quests added at this time for each add on as well. Clicking on the quest will give you a map arrow to follow to get to each one. You should also get a message at this point that the level cap has been raised to 30 to let you know Broken Steel is installed.

Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears

I'll be interested in seeing how all that works in the GOTY edition.

I can't believe the games I'm most excited about over the next couple months are both games I've already played! (this and Metroid Prime)

It seems like everything else I was interested in was pushed to Q1 next year.

Anyone lose all their clothes and weapons with Mothership Zeta and not get it back? I'm kinda pissed. There's gotta be a way to get my stuff back.

I think I'm gonna email L&O and ask him to change this thread to:

Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears

Quick spoiler question:

Spoiler:
I read this months ago but can't really remember much about it but wanted some quick spoiler-free guidance if possible. I read awhile back that you should not blow up Megaton if or when you get the chance. I had the guy offer it to me but I don't have the skills to fix it or blow it up since I just got started. But since I read that it is not good to do that, I just want to make sure that it the correct decision without going into a lot of the story
Thanks.

And I have learned that you need to save a good bit. I wish they had a hot key to press for saving instead of having to go into the start menu. I got into a couple of fights and not thinking about it, forgot to save both times and got my ass kicked. Guess that's what I get for being cocky with little XP.

XP.
A small bit of spoiler, but not much of one....

Spoiler:
blowing up megaton or not really is up to you. How you play the game is really what makes the game fun. If you want to play evil, you blow it up. You lose the ability to have a house there, but you will get one in Tennpenny tower for blowing up megaton, so no real loss.

What you might have read though, is DON'T blow up megaton until you have exhausted all side quests in the town. You get a long mission from the main store, that really is designed to get you used to the game, sort of a tutorial mission. I can't remember what other missions, but it is important you do all of that before blowing the town up. Once you are further in the game, blow it up if you like, or not. Disarming the bomb will end your chance of ever blowing it up (good karma).

also, my advice is to explore as much of the game as possible before really getting to much into quests. The games enemies level up with your character, but only before you meet them the first time. What ever level you are when you first meet anyone, is the level they will be for the rest of the game. So if you level up to high, before exploring the wasteland, the first time you run into a deathclaw will really take you by surprise. (they will be HARD) I would suggest doing a few missions, exploring the wasteland as much as you want, taking every side mission you can, but not completing them. Then you can start grinding out side missions. Of course, you don't need to do this...that is just what I did.

So how do you know whether to fight people or not? Do you meet them and then just runaway? Is deathclaw a person or an animal?
Spoiler:
I did run into a really big creature while searching for the radio station (the next mission after the exploring Megaton) and it killed the shit out of me very quickly. Then I ran into a group of bandits who killed me as well but I never saw the creature. I think I suck at the whole combat thing. The VATS seems understandable but I only seem able to kill very low level enemies with it. And by the time I kill one or two, my points are gone and the remaining guy kills me because the combat after VATS seems so awkward.

Can you fuck up a mission? I was in the bar/cafe in Megaton and spoke with three people there. One of the guys told me to meet him at the water treatment plant. Later, I stole a bobby pin from the room but no one saw me. Out of nowhere, one of the other guys goes cuckoo on me (assuming he saw me take the bobby pin or figured it out or something), so I decided to just silence him. I tried to shoot him but because I suck at the combat, he got out the door but not before alarming the chick and the guy who told me to meet him at the water treatment plant. I later went to the plant but the guy never showed up? Did I mess it up?

Also, does the store only have certain hours in Megaton? Every time I go by there, it seems closed though they have been a strange hours. Even with strange hours though, it seems everyone else is open or is asleep and you can wake them up.

And if you sleep with a prostitute, do you have to reequip your clothes after this or sleeping? I realized later that I had been walking about in my undies for about a day after I got killed by a creature and it showed the animation of me falling back with no clothes on. I never unequiped my armor and the bar sleep was all I had really done. I guess I was creeping out the locals after that...walking around trying to ask them questions in my underwear. Maybe that's why that guy went nuts in the cafe.

You can mess up missions...not sure if you did or not...but you can

If someone attacks you, kill them. You will not get bad karma.

If you are having a hard time, slide down the difficulty one click or so. This will make all the difference in the world, does not effect achievements, and you can always slide it back as you get the hang of things.

I never slept with a prostitute, at least not in a game....

Cool. Thanks for all the help fox. I am playing on Normal difficulty so I would be embarrassed if I slide it down any further.

Hmm...and it doesn't affect achievements or quests, you say?

I might do that just so I can go thru the game a little quicker since my back catalog is so large.

Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears

Another couple of quick questions.

Anyone have any special tricks for hacking computers and for lock picking?

I read an faq on gamefaqs for the hacking and it still seemed a little confusing even when I did a "very easy" computer. Any tricks to this?

And the locking picking is no where near as simple as splinter cell. I have broken more bobby pins than opened locks and most of those seemed like it was a lucky accident.

Thanks.

hacking computers is a bit of a word minigame... if you select a word, and it is incorrect, it will tell you how many letters in that word are actually found within the correct password you are searching for... ie: 1 of 7, 3 of 8, etc. so it gets rather easy to figure out...

if you get stuck, you could always attempt three times (fourth locks you out), then back out and start from scratch... of course the words you get to choose from are different...

I always save right before opening a locked box. If I don't pick the lock after a few attempts, then I reload from my save point. It uses up a little more time, but I don't lose all my lockpicks.

As for the computer, I don't think there's a special trick. It's just a little puzzle that you have to figure out. There are little things you can do, like selecting a word ending with "ing" for your first choice. If you only get 2 correct, then you know to rule out any other words ending in "ing." And vice versa, if you have at least 3 correct, chances are it's a word ending in "ing".

If you are referring to the computers locking up 4 unsuccessful attempts, simply log off the computer after 3 attempts and start over. You will get a new password, but the computer will not lock.

So what do you do if you lock up a computer? Is it locked permanently?

Yes...unless you take the computer whiz perk. I don't remember anything super VITAL to a computer that could not also be available by picking a lock or finding another way....so no major loss.

One thing I did not realize until a few computers hacks in...was that when you pick a word, it will tell you how many letters in that word are right....the thing I did not realize at first was that the letters right were also in the right spot. By walking up to the TV, I would just hold my finger up in a strait line, and quickly be able to find how many letters were right. It never took me more than 3 tries to hack it once I got off my ass and checked, because from my bed, the letters did not seem to line up perfect, so it was hard to see which letters were right.

also, the higher your science, the easier the hack is. At the highest level, most hacks only have 5 or so choices to choose from in the first place.

And there also clothes that give you more science, you'll find them when you advance in the game. I don't remember if there are drugs that help you with that too, there may be at least one that help you with lock picks.

Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears

There are also little "hacks" available when trying to break into a computer. If you see matching pairs of symbols on one line, even separated by other characters, you can click on them and get either bad choices removed or get your number of guesses raised back to 4.

For example:

342gd[a3v4](ddso2mq}

In this example if you clicked the [a3v4] part, one of the two things I mentioned earlier would happen. It works for pairs of (), {}, [] and .
