Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears
I'd say just play the regular game and see how much you like it. If you're hooked by the 5-10 hour mark, go for the DLC or wait for the GOTY edition.

fox & chess, thanks for the responses.
One other quick question...if you have the DLC and haven't finished the regular game, does it tell you when you are playing DLC? How do you know?

Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears
If you start up the game with the DLC for the first time and you've left Vault 101, you will pick up 3 new radio signals (for Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt and Mothership Zeta), plus a map marker for the Riverboat Landing (for Point Lookout). You also get quests added at this time for each add on as well. Clicking on the quest will give you a map arrow to follow to get to each one. You should also get a message at this point that the level cap has been raised to 30 to let you know Broken Steel is installed.

I'll be interested in seeing how all that works in the GOTY edition.
I can't believe the games I'm most excited about over the next couple months are both games I've already played! (this and Metroid Prime)
It seems like everything else I was interested in was pushed to Q1 next year.

Anyone lose all their clothes and weapons with Mothership Zeta and not get it back? I'm kinda pissed. There's gotta be a way to get my stuff back.

I think I'm gonna email L&O and ask him to change this thread to:
The Official "Where the Fuck is Michael Corvin?" Thread.

Quick spoiler question:
Thanks.
And I have learned that you need to save a good bit. I wish they had a hot key to press for saving instead of having to go into the start menu. I got into a couple of fights and not thinking about it, forgot to save both times and got my ass kicked. Guess that's what I get for being cocky with little XP.

A small bit of spoiler, but not much of one....
also, my advice is to explore as much of the game as possible before really getting to much into quests. The games enemies level up with your character, but only before you meet them the first time. What ever level you are when you first meet anyone, is the level they will be for the rest of the game. So if you level up to high, before exploring the wasteland, the first time you run into a deathclaw will really take you by surprise. (they will be HARD) I would suggest doing a few missions, exploring the wasteland as much as you want, taking every side mission you can, but not completing them. Then you can start grinding out side missions. Of course, you don't need to do this...that is just what I did.

You can mess up missions...not sure if you did or not...but you can
If someone attacks you, kill them. You will not get bad karma.
If you are having a hard time, slide down the difficulty one click or so. This will make all the difference in the world, does not effect achievements, and you can always slide it back as you get the hang of things.
I never slept with a prostitute, at least not in a game....

Cool. Thanks for all the help fox. I am playing on Normal difficulty so I would be embarrassed if I slide it down any further.

Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears
Another couple of quick questions.
Anyone have any special tricks for hacking computers and for lock picking?
I read an faq on gamefaqs for the hacking and it still seemed a little confusing even when I did a "very easy" computer. Any tricks to this?
And the locking picking is no where near as simple as splinter cell. I have broken more bobby pins than opened locks and most of those seemed like it was a lucky accident.
Thanks.

if you get stuck, you could always attempt three times (fourth locks you out), then back out and start from scratch... of course the words you get to choose from are different...

As for the computer, I don't think there's a special trick. It's just a little puzzle that you have to figure out. There are little things you can do, like selecting a word ending with "ing" for your first choice. If you only get 2 correct, then you know to rule out any other words ending in "ing." And vice versa, if you have at least 3 correct, chances are it's a word ending in "ing".
If you are referring to the computers locking up 4 unsuccessful attempts, simply log off the computer after 3 attempts and start over. You will get a new password, but the computer will not lock.

So what do you do if you lock up a computer? Is it locked permanently?

Re: The Fallout 3 Thread Of Exploding Teddy Bears
One thing I did not realize until a few computers hacks in...was that when you pick a word, it will tell you how many letters in that word are right....the thing I did not realize at first was that the letters right were also in the right spot. By walking up to the TV, I would just hold my finger up in a strait line, and quickly be able to find how many letters were right. It never took me more than 3 tries to hack it once I got off my ass and checked, because from my bed, the letters did not seem to line up perfect, so it was hard to see which letters were right.

also, the higher your science, the easier the hack is. At the highest level, most hacks only have 5 or so choices to choose from in the first place.

And there also clothes that give you more science, you'll find them when you advance in the game. I don't remember if there are drugs that help you with that too, there may be at least one that help you with lock picks.

There are also little "hacks" available when trying to break into a computer. If you see matching pairs of symbols on one line, even separated by other characters, you can click on them and get either bad choices removed or get your number of guesses raised back to 4.
For example:
342gd[a3v4](ddso2mq}
In this example if you clicked the [a3v4] part, one of the two things I mentioned earlier would happen. It works for pairs of (), {}, [] and .
