I imagine i never noticed because my wife normally plays drums and i prefer to sing. We both started on medium and then both went up to hard. So even if one of us is feeling lazy and drops down to medium while the other is on hard we probably wouldn't notice.

However, we are intending to switch instruments and she can easily begin singing on hard while i will need to start drumming on easy. This sounds like it would really screw me up learning to drum.

No, it wouldn't make a difference mixing vocals with drums. It only affects drums and guitar mixed. The vocals always move at the pace of the song, period.

I dont understand why they would average the speed.

What difference does it make to the other player what speed I play at since he is looking at his own fretboard?

pinata242 09-12-08 09:08 AM

My guess is peripheral vision. I imagine it would be distracting for all players to have varying scroll rates so close together.

And if that's not it, it's just a limitation of the rendering engine.

Oh okay, I thought you didn't understand what they were doing, not why they were doing it. No clue, since I'm not a developer at Harmonix. It does seem stupid to me.

No brainer purchase day one....BUT.....way too many doubles of Rock Band songs. And, this live trend sucks. Live at Leeds and a few others are the exception, not the norm.

argh923 09-12-08 12:15 PM

That's pretty underwhelming...and there's way, WAY too many duplicates of Rock Band songs. That's just stupid.

Liver&Onions 09-12-08 12:23 PM

disappointing a lot of songs are dups, but shit - I'm in this for playing Danny Carey's drums alone!

Michael Corvin 09-12-08 12:24 PM

So for the uninitiated anyone care to highlight the duplicates?

pinata242 09-12-08 12:30 PM

Duplicates:

* The Allman Brothers Band - “Ramblin' Man”
* Blondie - “One Way or Another”
* Bon Jovi - “Livin’ On A Prayer”
* Dinosaur Jr. - “Feel The Pain”
* Fleetwood Mac - “Go Your Own Way”
* Foo Fighters - “Everlong”
* The Guess Who - “American Woman”
* Jane's Addiction - “Mountain Song”
* Jimmy Eat World - “The Middle”
* Lacuna Coil - “Our Truth”
* Modest Mouse - “Float On”
* Silversun Pickups - “Lazy Eye”
* Smashing Pumpkins - “Today”
* Survivor - “Eye of the Tiger”

Available as DLC:

* 30 Seconds To Mars - “The Kill”
* No Doubt - “Spiderwebs” (not confirmed, but HIGHLY likely)
* System of a Down - “B.Y.O.B.”
* Tokio Hotel - “Monsoon”

argh923 09-12-08 12:32 PM

That's incredibly illogical. With the games being so similar in nature, the natural steps GH should be taking is to NOT have duplicates. Instead, nearly 1/4 of the setlist is the same. That's going to turn off a lot of people who otherwise would purchase both games.

Kelkee 09-12-08 12:32 PM

In case anyone has "issues" with kotaku here is the official post from Activision.

I can live with those duplicates. RB has some good songs but this list just blows it away IMO. Best list out of all the GH and RB games.

I count 84 actual songs on the list (86 - the 2 Duels).

14 on-disc dupes with RB2 is 16.67%

4 as optional DLC with RB is 4.76%

That's a ton.

argh923 09-12-08 12:35 PM

I actually think it's one of the worst...at least for the three 'band games'.

Well that totally blows. I was excited about BwBW...Now it's been replaced with something already in RB2. :down:

Wow...It's a struggle for me to even find 20 songs from that list that I am excited about. RB2 wins...

thelwig14 09-12-08 12:39 PM

I am still going to get this, but it is inexcusable for this many duplicates. Activision screwed themselves.

But this is by far the worst song list of any music game.

Kelkee 09-12-08 12:47 PM

Actually its a smart move. Good songs are good songs. You have to put good songs in your game otherwise you will screw yourself putting in songs that are not as popular solely for the sake of non-duplication.

Actually, it is not. They allowed themselves to lose market share, allowed numerous fake setlists to be revealed, damaged customer goodwill with a crap Aerosmith release that bombed, and then held onto their list with an insane amount of duplicates until they finally had to release it.

This isn't a super secret project. Both companies know which songs and bands each one is going for. If you have doubles, you hold those for future DLC, you don't allow this many doubles on the disk. Every one of those bands have another huge hit that could have replaced the duplicate.

fumanstan 09-12-08 01:06 PM

I don't really mind the doubles so much, although that's because I probably won't get Rock Band. Still, I think you guys are assuming that everyone is going to automatically get both games, which isn't the case. I'd guess the average person is still only buying one music game and won't be affected. I don't think that Activision "screwed themselves" at all.

Kelkee 09-12-08 01:07 PM

Not sure they can control fake setlists. Any fool can type one up and post one. I never led myself to believe anything about them unless it came out of Activision or devs for Act. Today we know.

Crap Aerosmith? It is what it is. You either love Aerosmith, and knew what your were getting into or mope about it not being the "next GH3". I bought it solely to have more songs to play. I expected nothing more since it was using the same GH3 engine. Honestly this should have been an entirely DLC product but for people with Wii's or no internet they are thankful I'm sure.

Problem is the band may only license that particular song for gaming. So you make the choice to put a dupe in or nothing. Id rather have a dupe. Plus you are forgetting alot of people dont have the resources to buy both games, or have access to DLC.

Well, at least they officially came out with something to talk about finally.
