That's incredibly illogical. With the games being so similar in nature, the natural steps GH should be taking is to NOT have duplicates. Instead, nearly 1/4 of the setlist is the same. That's going to turn off a lot of people who otherwise would purchase both games.

Wings is the only band I'm super stoked about here...

I see a handful of really great songs that aren't in the RB series yet, but I agree that there are a lot of duplicates, and I don't see a ton of songs that really jump out at me. I'll still pick up the disc, but I'm not nearly as excited by this list as I am by RB2's list. Of course, with taste in music being so subjective, my opinion shouldn't really matter to anyone else. ;)

Why is Activision getting all the schtick for the duplicates? Yeah, it sucks... but I think both parties are to blame?
|
Activision is getting the short end of the stick because Harmonix is releasing Rock Band 2 first. This means that Activision has to compete against what Rock Band has already established. If GHWT had come out first, we'd be seeing a lot of similar comments by people who purchased it and then planned on getting RB2.

That and people also seem to dislike Activision and Neversoft after GH3, so that doesn't help their cause.

For instance, the chit-chat about an AC/DC version of RB would really irritate me unless it let me export all the songs into the main game. |

I can see being upset with the release of standalone things when it is something i would much rather have as DLC to play in one system.

An annoyance sure, but certainly not a very good reason to hate a developer because you have to get up to change discs :p
Well i'm not saying i hate the developer, want to pee on their lawn, or pour sugar in their gas tank. I'm picking up both games (disc only) and will enjoy them. I would just really like to have DLC expansions (even if they release them for a markup on a disc as well) so i can have huge pools of things to play in one or two games versus having them scattered over 5 or 6 different games. |
I agree. GH2 & it's DLC should've been carried over to GH3, and GH:Aerosmith should've been an expandable disc for GH3. GH3 would be looking pretty good with all of those songs playable from one disc.

The duplicates make this one I'll wait to pick up used or cheap off EBAY. I am not as floored by the setlist as I expected either, and not a fan of the live tracks at all (on here or RB).

If you're really into band games, you're likely picking up both RB and GH. Activision is prolly banking on selling a lot due to the fact that most of us are pretty confident that their peripherals are going to be much better, and they likely will.
I like Rock Band, but the crappy guitars and drum sets make it necessary for better controllers. Most will probably be picking up the FULL band set for GH, while most RB 2 people will not (maybe some will get the new drums). I have more faith in the GH:WT as an overall package than I do Rock Band.... That said, RB has better DLC by a mile. However, I'll be buying WT next month, the full band set, and hopefully grab RB around Christmas. |
I am leaning towards just going with my LP and getting disc only of both games on release day, but if I go bundle, there is no question I will go with GH instruments.

I count 84 actual songs on the list (86 - the 2 Duels).
14 on-disc dupes with RB2 is 16.67% 4 as optional DLC with RB is 4.76% That's a ton. Any way you slice it though, you are still getting more songs than GHIII or RB on disc, so this shouldn't even be a factor. |

Here's some chatter from Neversoft and Kotaku -
http://kotaku.com/5050357/neversoft-...ero-world-tour Some things I thought were interesting - I'm sure some of this might be already known, but it's new to me! Now Brian got excited. “[Battle mode] is the most popular online mode.” Which is why they’ve kept it in World Tour, but it sounds like the dev team has learned its lesson. They’ve gotten rid of power-ups in battle mode (including boss battles) for World Tour – focusing instead on the riffs. “You play a riff, he plays a riff – and whoever plays better wins.” It all starts with a huge Excel spreadsheet. This is circulated through the team and everyone adds songs that they’d like to see in the game. World Tour had over 500 songs on that spreadsheet – stuff that didn’t make it into Guitar Hero III, stuff they’ve done before but think they can do better, etc. The song list was wheedled down by the preferences of the higher-ups and also by legal boundaries and availability of master tracks. |
 Pretty good interview. Finally someone asks the questions that everyone is thinking but afraid to ask.
|
In the middle of extolling its many values as a tool for creative genius, the handler quietly informed me that any tracks uploaded to the GH website that resembled covers of licensed music would be taken down. They want to support their fan base, but they don’t want to break the law (and potentially damage their credibility with artists they might want to include in the next game). |
I was reading on Wikipedia that the drum set will have a MIDI port on the back. Does that mean I can use the drum set as a MIDI controller, entirely independent of the game? If so, I think I was just convinced to buy the full band set.
