I wasn't super clear on it from the video. I got the general idea, but the IGN review makes the full concept clear and it does sound like a really unique puzzle game. IGN definitely liked it a lot.

Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)
Does anybody know what are the problems keeping certain Nintendo 64 games such as Donkey Kong 64 off of the Wii? They made use of an "expansion pack" or something, right? Why is that making it so they can't be ported to the Wii yet? Is there any progress in this? Do you think they would make it to the Wii ever?

Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)
The reason is there's no new Wii release or Holiday that Nintendo can tie a VC release into.
They're not as interested in VC anymore, it's all about WiiWare and DSiWare now. It has nothing to do with an optional expansion pack for the N64 emulator.

The way it worked out was that any IP owned by Nintendo (Donkey Kong, Diddy, Starfox, etc) remains with Nintendo. Any independently owned and created IP by Rare goes with them (Banjo, Perfect Dark, Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemini, etc).
Whether or not MS actually owns those IPs now is unknown. They may just own Rare. So if Rare leaves MS at some point (or is sold like before) we don't actually know if they still retain those IPs or they move with them like the move from Nintendo.

You thought Rare held the rights to a Nintendo character/franchise? Not quite.

Similar to how Marvel Comics now owns Miracleman/Marvelman, but the stories themselves belong to the artists and writers who did them.

Why the f*** is Altered Beast $10? I would pay $4 tops for it if I didn't play the crap out of it when I first bought a Genesis.

Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)
Must be the Arcade version of Altered Beast. Think they'd mention what the original platform is other than just "Virtual Console".
I'd be all over Dragon Quest Wars if I felt like spending a bunch of money on a DSi.

I'm also grabbing DQW when I get home tonight, should be a blast at $5.
I also think it's supposed to be the first in a series of $5 DQ DSiWare releases.

As much as I love Arkanoid, I'm not really interested without a spinner controller.

Of all the arcade games they could add I have no idea why they pick Altered Beast.
Looking online the rest of today's lineup is pretty solid. Nintendo Life gave very positive reviews to Arkanoid and Driift Mania when they were released in other territories and the Art Academy stuff looks very cool if you are into something like that. Probably just DQ for me this week for now. I still may pick up Arkanoid down the road, but I played the DS version to death and really liked playing it with the spinner controller.

Not sure about Thorium Wars, but for 1000 points it had better be amazing. Word Searches for 500 points interests me, but I still have plenty of them to do on CrossworDS so this is also a pass.

Final Fantasy is a major win for VC. Though I agree with you and I don't need it again. Still it's one of the first NES games I played and I loved it.
There was something magical about the first time you realize the 4 major dungeons form an X on the map whose center is both where you start and end the game.

Awesome, FF1.
I didn't like the changes in the PSone version - they made it way too easy, conversion to MP from the shamelessly D&D derived system, no silver swords, etc. It's cool to get the not-screwed-with original. And the GBA I&II version was way too easy.

I'm not personally interested in FF, but I will give credit to Nintendo for actually releasing a highly requested & desired classic title this week instead of some rehashed awful mess like last week....

Guys, I highly recommend Art Academy for DSIWare. I can't draw at all, I've always struggled with it, but already this game has taught me a lot. I just wish there were more lessons. I'd so buy a huge packed full version of this sort of thing for the DS.
Don't ignore it, it's pretty great, especially if you can't draw to start with.
It's also a great program to just "free draw/paint" if you don't care about the lessons.

I have downloaded it, but I haven't actually put anything together yet. I've mainly just fooled around with it.
Here are my three drawings from Art Academy so far from doing the first few lessons. They aren't anything special, but it's a lot better than what I've done before:
