Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)

^ the game looks great, but the trailer really bothered me for some reason.

And if they haven't given a date for it to be on the Wii, don't expect it for about a year...

I'm still waiting for the original.

How is Contra Rebirth? I take it that it's better to get it on the Wii then any other system because of the D-pad?

I didn't know it was going to be on other systems...

But anyways, after playing the first three levels, it's pretty much fucking awesome - I love how they went with a classic 16-bit SNES look, similar to how Capcom did an 8-bit look for MegaMan9. Basically, this is like the best SNES game you never played. It's just balls out run and gun action, with a great visceral feel to the shooting and killing. There doesn't seem to be a limit to continuing (you start at the beginning of the level you were on), it's no where near as difficult as the last Contra game for the DS, which was just too hard.

I should point out that it is kinda short (only about 5 levels - and NO jungle level - booo!).

I beat Contra 4 on DS, but it was such a grind and the difficulty got so frustrating that I immediately passed on Contra Rebirth. If this game is a bit more balanced in difficulty I may have to pick it up. Contra 4 punished you and the gap between screens made things even worse.

Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)

I think playing all Star Wars games in row would make SROTJ seem like going through the motions because they're all so similar, but playing them independently, SROTJ easily trumps all of them. It has more levels, which are more varied along with more varied gameplay. More playable characters that play different from each other, and it's not nearly as frustrating as the other ones.

Thanks! Frustrating with this series seems to be the key word I hear most often...good to know that SROTJ has less than the other two.

A surprise weekend update to the ESRB listings has revealed Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth will be coming to WiiWare.

Konami have recently done Rebirth games for Gradius and Contra, but a Castlevania game is a whole other beast. From the title it sounds like it might be a remake of Castlevania: The Adventure, which was the very first Gameboy Castlevania title back in 1989. It stayed very close to the NES design of Castlevania titles, but was known to be very slow.

The description from the ESRB states:

"This is a side-scrolling action game in which players battle against monsters in Dracula's castle. Players use a chained whip to fight their way through halls and dungeons filled with zombies, skeletons, flying eyeballs, and bats. The enemy creatures frequently shoot projectiles and attack players in hand-to-hand combat. If players sustain too much damage, they keel over and emit a burst of red blood. Some rooms in the castle also have spikes or spears stained with red, blood-like splotches."

We should hopefully hear more about this game soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)

Now that they have given us a Wii-ware "sequel/re-birth", is it too damn much to ask for the original NES Contra now, please??? It just seems really odd that it still hasn't been released...

Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)

Maybe they can release the original arcade version of Contra on the VC-Arcade - it was better than the NES version.

*edit: Actually, I take that back - the one on XBLA is the original arcade version and not the NES version. So yeah, they should put that on the VC soon - although they did give us Super Contra right off the bat, which is better.

Homebrew channel + NES Emulator + Contra rom = solid alternative to Wii VC

Re: The One and Only Virtual Console Thread (Wii)

No press release from Nintendo this week.

Wiiware got Spaceball Revolution, Mart Racer and yet another Texas Hold Em game.
VC got Crash 'n the Boys: Street Challenge from the River City Ransom guys.
DSiware got Oscar in Toyland and Art Academy: First Semester.

Spaceball looked interesting, but this week is pretty much a pass from me.

the Nintendo Channel update is definitely worth downloading. Lots of new features and better video. I can now find out we put in 70 hours playing Smash Bros and I spent 53 hours playing Fire Emblem on wii.

Don't you have to downgrade to an earlier firmware or something to get stuff to run though? I thought Nintendo keeps making these "homebrew" channels stop working with each new firmware update to combat piracy and what not...
I've got no beef with people who do emulation, but that's the silliest part of all this: I'm WILLING to pay the $5 for an actual legitimate VC release of the damn game! The slow drip of VC titles is frustrating when I have my wallet open and the big N won't willingly take it...

WiiWare

You, Me, and the Cubes

Publisher: Nintendo
Players: 1-2
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone) - Comic Mischief
Price: 1,000 Wii Points™
Description: Experience a unique combination of strategy and skill as you maintain a level playing field in the physics-based action puzzler You, Me, and the Cubes. The action centers around Fallos, mysterious creatures that resemble humans and have an ability to balance on a playing field of 3-D cubes. First, create a pair of Fallos inside your Wii Remote™ controller by shaking it up and down. Next, determine suitable places for the Fallos to land, then fling them to the selected cube with a swinging motion. After that, the Fallos are on their own. If your placement is sound, the Fallos will remain stable and you'll clear the stage after tossing a required number onto the cubes. But if the weight or locations of Fallos causes the cubes to tilt and sway too much, the Fallos will lose their balance and fall off. Adding to the challenge, you'll find that some cubes have different properties, making tosses tricky and further threatening the stability of the Fallos. Guide Fallos through dozens of single-player stages or invite family and friends to join you in two-player cooperative mode.
