Is Contra 4 out now?! I need to get it.. or put it in my Christmas list since I'm SUPPOSED to be calming my spending (though I think not eating out every night would do more good than buying a game every week or two, heh).

I've been listening to remixes and chip tunes from the guy that did Contra 4's soundtrack (virt) for a long time now, he definitely had a Konami sound to some of his stuff, although I'm convinced that RushJet1 actually DID soundtracks for Konami in the NES days, you can download "Sounds of the 2A03" at the link to hear why I think that.

Even with 10 lives and playing on Easy, I couldn't make it to the 2nd stage boss. Wow.

That's too bad. I wasn't expecting an easy game, but I just don't have the 2-D chops that I used to, nor the patience that it would take to get good at a game this hard.

Anyone have any opinions on the new Front Mission (remake) game? I'm considering getting it but some of the reader opinions on other sites have me worried that it will be disappointing. My alternative would be the new Warhammer 40k: Squad Command (PSP) game.

The game isn't impossible, but there are quite a few seemingly unavoidable deaths-- even after memorizing the enemy patterns on each stage. I actually managed to get up to Stage 5 this morning, which surprised me, considering that I wasn't all that focused at 4am.

Wait a sec - how is the game even out? Every release date I've seen for it isn't until after Thanksgiving.

He's a reviewer so i assume he got an early copy.

When I went to GameStop to pick up my copies of Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 and Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii yesterday, the manager told me that my copy of Contra 4 also arrived... so I snagged it.

It's a game that I bought on my own; as of this point, we have not received a review copy. In actuality, we do not get reviewables for every release... so we do have to purchase a lot of our own software (or rent it).

slop101 11-15-07 08:33 PM

Yeah, seems like all stores have it in regardless of the 11/23 date from all the online stores. Weird.

Baron Of Hell 11-15-07 08:48 PM

Anybody get ultimate mortal kombat?

Demontooth 11-15-07 08:51 PM

I picked up Contra 4 with SMG at TRU tonight and got $35 in gift cards.

Yavin 11-16-07 01:42 PM

Anyone tried out Ultimate Mortal Kombat yet? I'm wondering if it's worth it. There's a reader review on IGN that says the graphics are pretty pixelated. The official IGN review also mentions that there was a PSP Mortal Kombat release last year that included all 3 original MK games plus Puzzle Kombat, but I can't locate any info on such a release. I guess they have it wrong on that point?

I suck at Mortal Kombat, so I really don't have any interest in the UMK game for the DS. I think that the thing to remember about the pixelization mentioned is that the characters were digitized, so there's bound to be a grainy look to them.

The PSP release that the reviewer was referring to was Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play. The emulations of MKII and MKIII were allegedly gimped by framerate issues.

slop101 11-16-07 02:40 PM

You know, I played some Contra 4, and it's hard, but it's not hard in the way I was expecting - it's cheap-hard. As in, more than half my deaths resulted in getting hit by bullets I couldn't see on the tiny DS screens. If I were playing this on a screen, say, at least 10", then this would not be an issue. Further, the screen on the DS is also the controller, as in, when your hands move, so does the screen - making hectic games harder than they should be.

Here is the Space Invaders Extreme official Japanese site:

To see video footage, click the bar on the far right lable PV. This game looks amazing. :D

Thanks for that info. I just checked out the IGN review of Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play and it doesn't look good at all. I guess for old-school handheld MK, Ultimate Mortal Kombat is the way to go.

Mario Party DS.

Since the kids are getting DSs for Christmas, all four of us can play off of one card.
Can anyone confirm that Mario party DS has single cart multiplayer? I mean the full game... the preview on IGN makes it sound like multiplayer for minigames only: "And single cartridge multiplayer is fully supported so that players can download mini-games and play them against other opponents outside the main quest."

If this is true, I'll skip Mario Party DS. No WFC, and no true single cart play?? Damn...

This is what I read from Gamespot's Preview:

Surprisingly, it looks as though you'll get the full Mario Party experience with only one copy of the game via the DS's download play. We were able to have those three friends join in with the standard download play option, and it only took a minute or so to get into the game and choose one of the same five game boards you'll find in the single-player game. It seems like all the minigames will be available during a download-play session as well, since the game would transmit data for a few seconds each time we started a new minigame. We can't say what kind of multiplayer options you'll get with multiple cartridges, since we have only one copy of the game in-house, but we'll tip our hat to Nintendo's generosity for giving you such a robust multiplayer option when only one cartridge is present.

That was enough to get me to get it.

darkside 11-17-07 10:00 AM

That is cool. We all bought copies of the GBA version (when it was on clearance at CC) only to find that it was more of a single player game.

If this one is more like the console versions I will definitely pick it up.

finally got to check out Ultimate Mortal Kombat. It's a near-perfect port believe it or not. In 1p mode it runs smooth and is just like the old ones. Game plays out on the bottom screen while moves (inlcuding finishing moves :D ) are on the top screen.

The online play actually impressed. While you will experience some slow down while playing online, I never had an easier time connecting to a random opponent worldwide.

After some extended play the thumb pad will start fucking with your thumb. The online slow down seems more like a trend, but I never felt like it killed the game for me

Sounds good to me. I'll be picking this one up this week then.

I know I'm a bit late to the party on this, but I'm officially hooked on Picross.

I grabbed it yesterday on a blind buy. I was at the store looking for something I could play for a while and walk away from (A change of pace from the longer playing Zelda) and stumbled across this. Somehow, it entirely slipped under the radar.

What an addictive little game.

That is what I wanted to hear.

I got it for my wife a month ago... and it's all the she plays.

Until I bought Jewel Quest Expedition. :D

darkside 11-20-07 07:20 AM

I played through every puzzle on Picross, but since I bought the UK version I got no extra puzzles. I think it is time to buy the US version and just beat all those puzzles again. Loved this game.

Yavin 11-20-07 12:19 PM

Even though I set out to buy Ultimate Mortal Kombat, I ended up buying Bleach: The Blade of Fate instead. Seems to be a much better value and from what I've read is a really solid game. Plus, I dig the anime visual style. Anyone else played this one?
