So if Sony drops the price at E3, then Microsoft probably will too. We have had "price wars" like that at previous E3s.

It is kind of curious that Sony did already have a $500 PS3 model. Then they cancel that model only to drop the price of the remaining model to $500 a few months later. I would have definitely bought a $400 20GB model. $500 is still out my league.

they are up... $7.99... they rock!...

awesome new small maps for close quarters fast paced combat... requires skill... very little 'hide and shoot in back' and whatnot... thins out the weaklings quick...

i played 'em for a long time...

the new RFOM update has several cool features... mis-matched rounds won't start, like 8 on 3 in a round... you can rat out cheaters from the game... etc... most important is the new patch allows you to hear the mic talk of those in your squad... which rocks... because the smart people figure out you can hear them and join in their strategy... particularly cool in CTF or breach... it's kinda cool to hear the UK accents and the people talking in japanese or german or etc...

still waiting on the new campaign mode (single player) levels to be released...

I posted this question on CAG, hopefully someone here has some input.

I currently have a 360 with composite audio running to the TV and optical to my receiver so that when the kiddies are asleep I can still game but if I want the full effect I can lower the TV volume and pump the amp.

Is this possible on the PS3 or do I need to go into the audio settings each time and change it manually. Basically is it possible to have the audio output through the HDMI and the optical at the same time?

Thanks

I don't think that is possible, only one at a time.

Found this on another forum, and it is just too hilarious not to share.

WARNING: Do not cover the air vents or your PS3 will overheat

Yes, my friends ps3 broke.

He came round mine explaining that his PS3 just died for no reason.
I asked him if he used any buggerd games, dvds, or blu-ray. He said no. I asked him if he dropped it etc. No, no no.

So I went round his to have a look. He had put black duct tape over the air vents. All of them.

I said 'why have you put duct tape over the vents?'

He replys with this:

'I am really cautious about my ps3. I really look after it. I don't want dust getting inside it so I covered up the holes to stop dust from getting in.'

I was in tears.
Wouldn't common sense tell you that the "holes" are there for a reason? His parents must be so proud...

Nielsen to track video game use
Deal to measure Sony consoles' audiences may boost flow of ad dollars.
By Alex Pham, Times Staff Writer
July 3, 2007

Nielsen Co., which tracks viewers as they click through television channels, now wants to measure the games people play.

Nielsen on Monday announced a deal with Sony Corp. to collect data from hundreds of thousands of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable owners, capturing such information as which video games were being played and for how long.

For the Japanese electronics and media giant, the agreement is likely to help it eventually sell a wide variety of ads on its online game platform, PlayStation Network, as well as within each game it publishes.

"This gives us an opportunity to validate video games as an advertising medium," said Phil Rosenberg, senior vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, the division responsible for PlayStation. "It will help present the value of games to advertisers against other options they have, such as TV, Internet and print."

For Nielsen, the deal furthers the New York-based firm's ambition to measure the consumption of media content wherever it appears, whether it's delivered by television, cellphone, computer or game console. Nielsen is also trying to keep up with people, in particular 18- to 34-year-old men, who are spending less time watching TV and more time playing games.

"About 41% of U.S. homes have a console," said Jeff Herrmann, vice president of Nielsen Games, which announced plans in the fall to produce monthly reports on video game usage starting July 25. "We think it's an important device to measure as it relates to in-home media consumption."

It also gives Nielsen, which is the de facto standard for TV ratings but has struggled in recent years to keep up with nimbler rivals in measuring online activity, a chance to get ahead of the curve in the nascent game advertising business.

"It's not the old media world anymore," said Michael Cai, analyst with Parks Associates in Dallas, who estimates that spending on advertising within games will grow to more than $800 million in 2012, up from $90 million this year. "You now have lots of new platforms, new media, new business models. Nielsen is trying to branch out. They've learned from the past, and now they want to make sure they're on top of any emerging media."

To protect player privacy, the data Sony will supply to Nielsen starting in a couple of months will be organized by the game, not the individual player, said Sony spokesman Dave Karraker.

Other console makers are also sensing opportunity. Microsoft Corp., maker of the Xbox 360 console, last year paid more than $200 million to acquire Massive Inc., whose technology dynamically weaves ads within games. Players of a driving game, for instance, would speed past billboards advertising motor oil one day, tires the next.

"It's a big and robust area for us, and we're investing more into it," said Kevin Brown, general manager of Xbox New Media. Although Microsoft does not break out revenue from ads on its Xbox platform, Brown said the figure grew 350% last year and is on track to triple this year.

Games are ripe for advertising, said Cai, who estimates that companies will spend $2 billion in 2012 to promote their products in all game-related settings, including sponsored tournaments, display ads on casual game websites, creating a presence in virtual game worlds such as there.com and Second Life, as well as product placement within games.

But because only a handful of companies, including Interpret, founded last year by former Nielsen executives in Santa Monica, provide independent audience measurement data across all consoles, advertisers have been hesitant to jump in.

"Advertisers don't necessarily understand the medium," Cai said. "So their spending on this platform will continue to be inconsistent."

Man I wish Sony would release some AAA titles to capitalize on the 100 dollar price break. Lair would be the perfect title to complement the many new PS3 systems bought after the pricebreak.

It seems like for once, Sony has caught a break and it seems like this price reduction is what's needed to jumpstart sales and have developers back on the bandwagon.

Lair drops on August 14th. Sony has my attention now, but Im still not adopting until Drake's Fortune, Ratchet & Calnk FTD, and Tekken 6 are available. Well that and I'm about 300 short . MGS is still too far away.

Speaking of Tekken they recently held an open beta for it in Japan...

I wonder if we'll get any info at E3 regarding either an attachment for regular remotes (or for universal remotes) or rumble gamepads.

According to Kotaku Sony will also show, but not launch, their new video on demand service at E3. Sounds like the same thing the Xbox already has with the added ability to watch your videos on the go with the PSP. If they can unlock the full PSP res of these videos on the PSP memory stick I will be tempted to buy another PSP. Also gives PS3 owners an experience similar to Apple TV and the iPod.

That is a nice feature. I hope Sony takes other steps to get their on-line offerings up to snuff with Live.

I know they're late-to-the-party compared to LIVE, but you'd think they'd have more downloads, especially movie trailers, up for download. And you'd think the trailers they do put up wouldn't have major pixelation problems...

They really should have demos for all of the download games available. I still can't get enough of Super Stardust. I'm completely addicted.

Anyone have an EXTRA receipt scan for a console they purchased after July 1st? Wondering if I can dip in on the free movies....since they only need the UPC, not the serial #.

I have my current receipt and plan on editing a copy of it to show the correct date along with my barcode.

I've run into an annoyance/inconvenience with my PS3.

I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router, and when my PS3 signs into the PSN, it seems that other devices that are connected to the router momentarily lose connection. The taskbar icon on my laptop indicates that I am not connected to a wireless network, and shortly afterwards (10 seconds maybe) it begins to reestablish the connection. It seems to also occur when I disconnect from the PSN.

Does this happen to anybody else? Any tips?

EDIT: Weird. I just tried it again right now and it didn't disconnect. But it was doing it yesterday and earlier today. Anyway, I'd still appreciate any input just in case it happens again.

I've read reports that there are SOME issues with certain version of that Linksys router. Mine was flaky for a while, but seems better as of late.
