12000 is the limit, but as L&O said, you can put them in at your leisure.

That makes more sense. For some reason, I just assumed they'd give a code worth 100000 points.

Well my refurb unit has officially putzed out. X-box #3 should be in my hands in a couple weeks.

Hopefully I get a decent refurb unit. The one I have now the now infamous one that had a giant crack in the grill. So I welcome getting a different one. So this time it dying on me doesn't bother me so much, that and I have a Wii to keep me occupied until I can get back to my pinata garden.

I got mine back last week, it has uber fans in it -- they're a little quieter but they make a much deeper sound.. if that makes any sense.

I understand the feeling, but don't think it really holds true. With the rate of technological advance and relatively long life-cycle of consoles, of course companies are going to come up with design revisions that improve cost and performance. It would be stupid of them not to implement them.

I just bought a 360 a couple months ago, but the 360 redesign isn't a big deal to me. Part of the reason I picked the hdtv I picked, was because it would do 1080p over vga (and component). I don't know what else I would use the vga input for, I would use dvi for a htpc, so it gives me a use for the vga input.

I can see how this would be a bigger deal for people who have tv's that either don't have, or won't do 1080p over component/vga. Also it's nice that the hdmi out will be standard (I think this is an hdmi requirement) so you can pick up a cheap high quality hdmi cable (from monoprice of course), rather than overpriced proprietary cables.

I will probably pick up the bigger hard drive. But I would rather have them just make an enclosure that snapped on nicely to the 360, that way I could pick up my own hdd.

It isn't the cost and performance, it is the features added that I was really talking about. More ports, bigger HD, backlight on the GBA SP vs the GBA (which should have been there in the first place), better screens on the DS Lite vs the DS, Not to mention the updated consoles are usually quieter, bugs have been fixed, cost of the system usually comes down, and more games are available.

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with aging. Getting older, I'm really don't care about being on the cutting edge of gaming anymore.

I bought an xbox 360 a couple of weeks ago and have had a few problems

1. The hard drive has recently started making clicking noises and is taking a lot longer to open certain things whether it be game demos, or returning from demos back to the main menu..it just repeatedly clicks for 30 or more seconds and then switches to thew right screen..

2. I took out the only disc ive had in the thing all wekk (ghost recon advanced warfighter) and noticed the disc has been getting big circular gouges near the middle ring and around lighter ones around the edge. I have not touched or moved my xbox since i got it. Today it wouldn't even read the disc. I had to eject it and then close the tray again...

Should I exchange it?? I don't think these things should be happening....

Like madmonk said, there is a big difference between simple hardware revisions to improve performance and adding new features that some people would have liked in the first place, like HDMI or 120GB hard drive.

Sounds like you have your 360 vertical in your setup.

So it is better to have the 360 horizontal?

Exchange it. I know plenty of people who have this - usually it screws up your discs so that the machine will start telling you it's an unreadable dirty disc. Mine is real bad right now, I'm calling Microsoft on Monday.

You should not leave discs in the console when turning off/on. When the laser rises and calibrates itself it gouges the disc and can also damage the lens on the lazer.

I kept mine horizontal and had the exact same problems start up. It was leaving light circular almost buff marks on the disc. When i called MS about it they basically accused me of vibrating the machine while it was on. I had the 2 year warranty so i made them exchange it for me anyways and i'm glad i did because between me calling them and the coffin arriving the thing started not recognizing 360 game discs as a game and instead reading them like a DVD. The drive also would sometimes not open when you pushed the button and required flipping down the front flap and giving the tray a little tug outwards to start the process.

I was leaving the games in the system when turning off and on but after hearing the noises it started making on boot-up i quickly started taking the discs out each time.

Last night as I was playing PGR3 I noticed the noise of the disc abruptly stop (just got noticeably quieter). The game continued as usual but only minutes before I noticed it taking a bit longer when loading this one level. I didn't get a DRE.

Is this anything to be concerned about?

Yeah but it has plenty of clearance on all sides to keep cool and it isn't like buried in shag carpet or anything. Is there some other effect the carpet might have had that i'm not realizing?

I will say though, damn i miss gaming with you guys. I need to get some games on Vossenack in

maybe excess static and heat--not just for blocking vent holes but it also insulates and the heat wont dissipate as much as it would if it were on a cool surface. Also you probably had excess lint getting sucked into the holes that were facing the carpet.

Dean T. of the Mercury News just made an oops and leaked some Xbox 360 announcements Microsoft was planning on dropping next week at CES. Not only does he mention the improved Xbox 360s with 120GB hard drives and HDMI ports, he also talks about the use of the Xbox 360 as an IPTV set-top-box.

The leak says Microsoft's IPTV services will have instant channel change, multiple picture-in-picture, broadcast shows, video on demand, and DVR functionality—gotta use those 120GB for more than just trailers.

Sounds like Dean Takahashi's getting a Takahating from Microsoft tomorrow. –Jason Chen

Xbox 360 To Serve As Set-top Box for Internet Protocol TV (IPTV)
Written by Rivithed

Saturday, 06 January 2007

Microsoft's Bill Gates and Robbie Bach are expected to announce details on the Xbox 360 serving as an Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) in an upcoming keynote at CES. An early reported announcement from Dean Takahashi at the Mercury News blog (which has now been removed) revealed the information.

From Dean Takahashi: "Microsoft is also dropping something of a bomb at the show. Jim Brady, a spokesman for Microsoft, said Gates and Bach will say in the keynote speech Sunday night at the Venetian Hotel that the Xbox 360 will be able to serve as a set-top box for IPTV, or Internet protocol television. The details on this announcement are sketchy and Brady says only that it will appear later this year. He did say that no consumers would be left behind, meaning that all of the 10 million plus Xbox 360s in the market would be able to participate in the IPTV services at some level."

Sounds credible with the recent reports from Variety and IGN on how successful the Video Marketplace has been.

An announcement that Microsoft has hit and gone a bit beyond the 10 million Xbox 360 units sold target is expected as well. Official NPD numbers of console holiday sales are to be reported in the coming week.

Very interesting and also interesting that they will be announcing more than 10 million units sold.

I think the XBox 360 is going to make it!

They are going to have to do a lot of work on the marketplace UI if they want to go mass market with it.

I'm using the $35 Xbox (original) Adapter I got off eBay a few months ago for my 360. Zero complaints.
