Yeah, if it's that bad you'll just have to exchange or return it regardless of whether you keep or eBay it.

Exactly, that is how I feel. And I wouldn't Ebay this specific item, that is for sure. Not only will I probably loose money, I will probably have to deal with a pissed off customer whose PS3 isn't working. I was talking about the possibility of Ebaying it before I saw the damage. I really don't want to, and I have been saving my pennies for one of these. But a Christmas bonus I was expecting (read: promised) has been late in coming, and I don't feel like pissing off any higher-ups by asking for it. So we will see, I will hopefully get this exchanged out and get to keep it.

Was hoping for something smaller than that one. Like the one microsoft has for the 360.

for anyone who is using component video cables for the PS2 with their PS3, can you still use the optical plug? I hit 3 Best Buys today and none had any PS3 cables but they had a ton of the Psyclone PS2 sets. the thing was is that they had this big rubber sheild around the plug and it looked like if I used them I wouldn't be able to use the optical out. is anyone using the Psyclone PS2 component cables and optical out?

I had the exact same problem with the exact same cables. I bought the PS2 psyclone cables and it was so big that it wouldn't allow me to plug in the optical. I fixed it by buying the PS3 psyclone cables (link below) it has the same design but it has a narrower head and it works with the optical.

I know there's a Gamestop brand component cable (I think they're actually manufactured by Pelican) that uses the original PS2 head.

How would you rate the picture quality right out of the box (w/ composite cables)? I'm debating whether to go the component route or HDMI.

Composite = Shit.

Go either HDMI or component is far better.

Aren't there reported problems with the HDMI input? I could have sworn that I read something concerning the matter on CAG.

I knew I wasn't crazy. Here's the link:

If you plan to game in HD, then you need component or HDMI. Composite is a primitive technology and will never get you above 480i.

So, when SHOULD PS3's be readily available??? I want to use my GameRush credit on one, but I know I'll have to wait a while until we can get a PS3 anywhere in the US.

I've been checking for days at all the local Best Buys for those Psyclone PS3 cables with no luck. I just broke down and ordered them at bestbuy.com instead. I swear the reason I can't find them locally is because I have a 12% off coupon as well as $50.00 in reward certs.

Purely a guess, but I'm hoping they become somewhat easier to find around Spring, when Sony has its year end.

Yeah, I hope so...maybe I should take my credit and convert to something else...who knows. I know GameRush is not the ideal place to score a PS3.

if you look at the 360 as a datapoint, I'd guess late January/Feb. But if you take into consideration the blu-diode concerns, it could be longer. Who knows.

Thanks...I really was just wondering if Sony said anything...apparently not, which I was I thought.

The PS3 theft saga takes a tragic turn:
Police kill suspect in PlayStation 3 robbery
Police tried to serve student with warrant in case of stolen video games

The Associated Press
Updated: 1:37 p.m. PT Dec 4, 2006
WILMINGTON, N.C. - A teenager accused of robbing a student of two new Playstation 3s on the day the popular game consoles were introduced was shot to death by police sent to arrest him.

Peyton Strickland, 18, was killed Friday at a house he shared with three roommates, New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey said.

“If this boy would’ve come to the door, opened the door, we probably wouldn’t be talking,” the sheriff said Sunday.

Roommate Mike Rhoton said Strickland was unarmed, but may have been holding a video game controller when he went to the door as it was bashed in by officers.

Authorities promised Monday to fully investigate the fatal shooting. “No one is above the law and no one is beneath its protection,” District Attorney Ben David said. He declined to discuss details of the case.

The State Bureau of Investigation is examining the case and three deputies on the team were placed on paid leave, normal practice whenever officers fire their weapons, Causey said.

Arrest warrants alleged that Strickland, a student at Cape Fear Community College, and a University of North Carolina-Wilmington student stole two PlayStation units from another UNC-Wilmington student that day.

The sheriff said the robbery victim had waited three days in line to buy two Playstation 3 units for $641 each at a Wal-Mart. He was unloading the units at his campus apartment when one man beat him to the ground while another took the PlayStations, Causey said.

The sheriff said Strickland was shot by members of a a special police unit who went to help university officers serve warrants. He would not say why the special team was assisting.

Strickland’s dog, a German shepherd, also was shot to death.

The second man named in the warrants was arrested at another address and was released on bail on Saturday, authorities said.

The nationwide introduction of the Sony game system on Nov. 17 was marked by rowdy crowds and store stampedes. One buyer waiting in line at a Connecticut store was shot by armed robbers.

Note to self : Drop the wireless controller before answering door.

Don't know if this was posted but this more to DJ Longfellow's response:

In bold is N'Gai Croal, Newsweek reporter. In non-bold is EA CEO Larry Probst. From this interview:

Here's my first question. PS3 is supply constrained and will likely remain so until early 2008. 360 demand is--

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Early 2008?

You don't think so?

I don't think they'll be supply constrained that long. You think all through 2007 they'll be supply constrained?

Well, looking back to the PS2 launch, Sony shipped a million units for the Japanese debut, most of which sold in the first 48 hours. But for the Japanese launch of PS3, they only shipped around 80,000 units, more than ten times fewer machines. So they're nowhere near meeting demand in Japan. In North America, Sony shipped just under 500,000 units for the PS2 launch, but only 200,000 units for the PS3 launch. So they don't have enough supply to meet demand here. Sony launched in Asia with less than 20,000 units. And early next year, they have to start stockpiling units for the European launch in March 2007--assuming that date doesn't slip. So we're looking at four territories where supply probably won't meet demand, and by the time Sony starts to catch up, it'll be holiday 2007, where the combination of big AAA games and gift-giving will increase demand even more.

So you're not believing their projection of 6 million units shipped by the end of March?

Even if they somehow get to that, will that be enough to satisfy the global demand?

I don't think that they would catch up in the first quarter of 2007, but at some point in calendar '07 I think they catch up to demand. I don't think it takes until the early part of 2008. It doesn't happen in early 2007, but it happens in that year.
I would be surprised if they are still hard to find by February, personally.

Just got a 20 gig one in the Jersey Lodi gamestop. Took a day off today and called the 20 closest gamestops and one had a 20 gig one just come in. Guy wouldnt save it for me as I told him I know you make commision off the warranty so if you save it ill get the warranty he said no go. I sped from queens NY to Lodi NJ within 40 minutes wearing pajamas and picked it up. Once I got in I asked him if the system was sold he said joked around saying it just got sold and laughed. 2 other people in the store said *what you have it in stock ?* Lucky I asked first. Whew

I really wonder what warranted multiple shots to be fired. I mean, did the boy sic his dog at the police? Did they then mistake the wireless controller for a firearm? I hope it was justified.
