I just hooked mine up with HDMI to my 42 inch westinghouse that is 1080p capable , but when I choose 1080p manually in the setup it always blanks out and goes to a scrambled screen and switches back. When I choose automatic it chooses 720p as the preferred resolution. Anyone else have this problem?

The Wii doesn't even include component cables and also use a different connector than the ones for Gamecube. Nintendo doesn't even lose money on the Wii so I can't really kill Sony for not including it in the PS3. Sony at least made the PS2 component cables compatible with the PS3.
I have the 37" Westinghouse and the fix for my tv is switching inputs and back to the HDMI. There are certain problems with some TVs and the HDMI on the PS3. The fix for the 42" seems to be to use a HDMI-DVI adapter.

I have a question. First I don't have a PS3 yet(like most people) but plan to sometime next year when I can walk into a store and just pick one up easily. I have a 26'' Toshiba HDTV(26hf84) that converts 480p to 540p and from what I could tell in my manual converts 720p to 1080i and 1080i to 1080i. So I'm pretty sure it accepts 720p, but converts it to 1080i. So, if and when I get a PS3, if I set the ps3 to 720p and I play a 720p game, will my tv still downrez the game to 480p even though my tv can accept 720p but convert it to 1080i?

Had the same problem when I opened up my PS3 on launch day to set it up. I used monster component cables and monster optical audio cables on my PS2, each of which has really fat heads. They didn't really line up correctly, but instead of being patient, I forced them in. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I noticed a faint green/blue line that would track from the bottom of my screen to the top when using the PS3. I figured I must have damaged my component cable when forcing it in. So I finally got a new component cable (a cheap $25 one from Best Buy) and that one is about 10x worse with the tracking lines than my original monster cable. I read on some other forums when searching that it is probably electronic interference, but I have no idea how to fix that, I've tried plugging into several different outlets and hooking to different tv's, all with the same line on the screen problem. I'm more convinced that I damaged the PS3 input slot by forcing my cable in. Wish I could test the HDMI output, but I have an old HDTV.
So I finally got sick of it, called Sony and they shipped me a box overnight with another box to overnight the system to them. Said they'd ship me an entire new unit w/in 5 business days via overnight. Sending it out tomorrow. Just sucks that I can't keep the original hard drive, will have to redo all my settings and redownload my demos, which takes forever it seems. Hopefully the new unit doesn't cause me the same display problems. We'll see. At least I have my new Wii to hold me over for the week I'll be without PS3!!

Regardless of whether or not your TV will Display 720p if it accepts 720p then that's where the PS3s job should end. Your TV has to upscale to 1080i. So long as your PS3 is set properly to output to 720p you shouldn't have any problems.
Does the PS3 not output to 1080i? if so wtf is up with that? it's a standard HD resolution.

For ex.

www.cheapassgamer.com - Scroll down to Nov. 16 and look for PS3 & HDMI Problem + Fix = New Problem- You do need to register though
I had to use a DVI - HDMI cable to get it to stay at 1080p. Even then when it changes screens I get a static bar freeze up the screen causing me to turn off and on the tv to get it back to normal. While my main complaint is related to how the PS3 works with my TV many others are also affected.
Also the online setup for the PS3 is an annoyance to use. While I understand when the 360 came out it wasnt the greatest how can the PS3 online setup be that far behind.
For ex the dling of demos for the PS3 when you dl a demo you cannot change screens you have to sit at the DL screen and let it finish all the way through. This comes from being spoiled by the 360 and not really Sony's fault, but as a competitor at least be close to catching up? Also the typing of text uses the PSP layout which takes some time to get use to.
With all the hype surrounding the machine I was hoping the top rated game Resistance would blow me away with gameplay and graphics. After playing gears of war and R6 Vegas on 360 using VGA 1080p I was saying to myself this *looks* like call of duty 2 for the 360. After being spoiled by the cover system and playing online Coop with freinds I was exremetly let down. Then again its a regular fps so the cover system might not be an issue for certain people, but online coop not available for resistance is a big annoyance as playing with buds and setting up plans to attack should be a common online setup by now.
Alot of other things could have been better with the layout, but Sony may soon release a patch to fix all this who knows?

Even though the PS3 press has been mostly negative so far, I'm looking forward to eventually picking one up. Once the price drops and the game library improves, I think it'll be worth buying. I didn't get a PS2 until about two years after it launched, so I can wait a year or two for the PS3 as well. For me, a big bonus of owning a PS3 is that I'll be able to pick up Blu-Ray movies which aren't available on HD-DVD. I've already got the HD-DVD addon for the 360, but there are a bunch of Blu-Ray only titles I'd like to own as well. It'll be nice to be on both sides of the format war.

Major PS3 Firmware Update Coming March '07
Despite all Sony's talk about how the PlayStation 3 is supposed to be a media hub, there's been very little to show for it. We have standard trailers and movie playback, but even the Xbox 360 can do that. But come March '07, to coincide with the Europe launch, the PS3 is going to get a major firmware update.
SCE's VP of Technology says there could be a utility to download third-party operating systems direction from the PS3. In addition, there are even more gaming features planned to be added with the update. Perhaps more PSP + PS3 integration? What we'd like is to just be able to play DivX and XviD files off a burned DVD directly from the PS3's interface. Too much to ask? – Jason Chen

Can you use ANY HDMI cable with the PS3? I think I MIGHT be getting one this week....
Also, what cables come WITH the PS3?
I'll use this on a 26" LCD (360 on my BIG TV). The 26" can only do 720p I believe (no 1080p for sure)...would I even need HDMI cables?
I also have optical running FROM my TV to my receiver (it has optical out). If I run HDMI to my TV, would it still use OPTICAL out for the sound?

Yes, you can use any HDMI cable with it. It comes with composite cables. The HDMI lets you output at 1080p. If you use HDMI the PS3 lets you choose another source for the audio other than HDMI.

If not, I will have to get creative and get an optical splitter since I have an older receiver in this room. The TV is a HP LC2600N LCD
