Can anyone point to a definite link that says this isn't the case?
Nintendo has never stated this, nor has it ever been true, I'm not sure where you got that impression from because I've never read anything like that. If you want to play the new mario games, you'll be using the new control schemes, just like you had to use an analog stick when Mario 64 came out. It looks like a lot of fun! Mario has always brought new gameplay ideas to the world of gaming, this one looks like quite the revolution. Why would anyone want to use a standard controller for this type of game anyway?

I have to concur with what everyone else has said. The motion sensing is not a gimmick. It is going to be integral to most of the games, including almost all first-party games (the notable exception being SSB Brawl thus far). Any Wii exclusive game will most likely use only the motion sensing, because that's the crux of the system.

The fact that you can't use a more traditional control scheme actually means that the motion sensing will be less of a gimmick, though, which ends up being a good thing.

If you want games where the motion sensing is added on as an afterthought, buy a PS3.

See, I think it's silly and dumb (just my opinion, not threadcrapping) to wave a remote around the TV for hours at a time. I could've sworn that the old-style controllers could be used for these games...I'm glad I know now before buying the system, though. Wish I hadn't sold my Cube...ah well. I'll just buy a used Cube and Twlight Princess.

I would say try an in-store demo before you decide to never buy a Wii. Apparently the controls are a lot more intuitive and fun than you might think.

What's the word on Wii Orchestra? Any advance "reviews" on how it plays? I've seen the videos and all of that, but I haven't actually heard anyone really say what they thought of it. This might sound stupid, but that's one of the games that I'm most looking forward to.

Does it even have a firm release date?

I don't even remember ever seeing a playable version... Unless it was on the screen at E3 that was for special performances only (aka only Nintendo workers ).

There are a number of videos on YouTube of people playing the game, but I don't know who they are or where it's at:

I want that game bad, and I want it right now.

Oh, so there is a "playable" version out. It doesn't even look like playing though, just looks like they're waving it around. Maybe it's not so much a game as it is a music player that you can change the pitch or speed of with the Wiimote?

Remember when most thought the DS was "silly and dumb" when Nintendo announced it?

I never quite understood why some people couldn't see that the DS was going to be quite huge. Just the concept of the touch screen, with Nintendo behind it all, was enough to get me to stand up and take notice. I am the exact same way with the Wii right now. I see that many people don't get how the concept will lead to some really awesome things, but I really believe that we're in for some truly special gameplay features, and we'll all be saying "holy crap" quite a lot.

Yeah, I will probably do that. I'm hoping Nintendo will have some systems available to demo before launch, for people like myself who are skeptical.

When they initially announced it they didn't mention it would have a touch screen. They basically came out and said they were coming out with a dual screen portable and that's it.

Personally I thought the DS was a stupid gimmick, especially when the only video I saw of it being used was Warioware. But then Phoenix Wright turned my world upside down. So I can see how just hearing about the Wii or seeing some very short promo videos might not be convincing enough. I think the in-store demos will go a long way towards customer acceptance of the product.

People were highly skeptical even after Nintendo unveiled the system at E3 2004, where they fully disclosed the systems touch screen.

No Wii Kiosks in Wal-Mart this year? http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/24/ru...-the-children/
Wal-Mart's electronics department layout does not have an allotment of space to demo the Nintendo Wii for the fourth quarter. Our tipster says that after asking for greater details as to why they wouldn't be installing any Wii demo units, he was told by his manager that they had "fear of some kid getting hurt or injuring others in the process of flailing his arms around."

Although "Nintendo doesn't comment on rumors" and Wal-Mart corporate hasn't answered our query, after calling numerous Wal-Marts across the country, we have confirmed that it is true that the Wii is not part of the Q4 layout.

Did Wal-Mart executives decide that the Wii was just too dangerous to demo in its stores? Is Sony paying off the world's largest retailer in an attempt to sway consumer mind-share when shopping?

Doesn't look that way. Although Nintendo and Wal-Mart won't talk, employees from various Wal-Marts have stated that they expect to get their Wii demo units in for Q1 2007 and believe it was a timing issue. They did stress that although they will not be demoing the unit, they will certainly have the Wii for sale at launch in November.
Probably won't matter much as the gamer buzz should be enough to carry this through the new year with no impact to sales. But if Nintendo is going to attract new audiences, they need this thing in Wal-Mart.

I hate Wal-Mart so much. Not because of this, specifically.

Fuck Walmart. Shopping there is torture, because it's so dirty, and also because it's crowded with assholes.

1. Neutral position - does not exist. With a mouse, you have a desk. With a controller, you have analogue extremes. With the Wii remote, you have... infinite, undefined space. I shouldn't need to explain why this is a problem (it isn't for some games, but think first-person).

2. The controller doesn't actually work perfectly. Throughout demos, I repeatedly lost my targeting reticule, had it jump around a lot, get stuck or lose its zero point (which is difficult to find). It lags as well. Playing Wii Golf, I found it impossible to actually replicate a neat swing, presumably because of incorrect controller orientation - well a golf swing is quite hard to orientate properly, and that's a complication the game shouldn't have.

3. Nobody has can keep their entire arm that steady. It's not that the controller isn't precise enough - it's that we're not precise enough. The result is an intensely wavery, shakey experience where no action feels definite or even deliberate. You may remember from SMG videos the 'star' pointer - well aiming in Metroid Prime felt just like that. All over the place. Far too loose.

i'm interested in wii, but i'll be waiting for reviews.

I agree with both of you on this, but I thought it was newsworthy enough to post here because of who Nintendo is trying to reach. This flies in the face of that, at least in the short term.

I'm going to need to demo it as well. I'm just not convinced anything including the Wiimote can improve on the mouse for FPS games.

I'm not expecting the Wii control to be perfect, but if there is too much drift or loss of targeting it can add another level of frustration to games instead of making it more fun. Not to mention fatigue on games where you have your arm extended or moving for long periods of time.

Again, Nintendo proved me wrong on the DS so this may work very well with the Wii. I'm just wondering if its something where the control may be great for games like Cooking Mama and Wario Ware, but frustrating on games like Zelda and Metroid.
