one of the company's 2006 stopgaps for Nintendo could turn out to be "Wii Play," which includes quick games of air hockey, fishing, table tennis, billiards and some other games
GTA... Wii... etc.

Here's a closer picture of the back of the Wii. I'll have to check and see if that multiout for the video cable is the same as the one the composite/s-video on the GC/N64/SNES. It looks like it, but need to look again to double check.
I hope so as I really don't want to have to scramble for another S-video cable at launch.
Damn, direct link to image didn't work and I don't have time to save and upload it at the moment, so here's a link.

Possibly some bad news from the IGN Wii Faq for those hoping to get component in the box:
What's in the Box?
The Wii system comes packaged with one Wii-mote, one nunchuk attachment, a Wii stand (which supports the system in its vertical position), an AC adaptor, a composite audio/video cable, a sensor bar, a sensor bar stand, and two AA batteries for the controller. In the US and Europe, Wii will also come bundled with a copy of Wii Sports, a five-game compilation (on one disc) that features such titles as Wii Sports Tennis, Baseball, Bowling, Golf and Boxing. In Japan, however, Wii Sports will be sold separately for approximately 4800 yen.

Looks like definite bad news...from further in the IGN faq.
So you can't use the GCN component cables, and with the output being a new proprietary plug, it sounds like it won't work for the gc composite/s-video cables either.
Q: Wii component cables are not included in the box. But will they be available to buy when the system launches?
A: Yes. Although Nintendo has not yet divulged details on the price of the separately sold Wii component cables, the 480p compliant solution will be available at launch. Third party manufacturers are already advertising Wii component cables on various online videogame retail outlets. Meanwhile, just about every Wii game in development supports 480p and 16:9 widescreen modes, which makes a good case for Nintendo to ready the component cables for launch.
Q: Do GameCube component cables work with Wii?
A: No. Wii features a new proprietary plug that simultaneously handles both component and audio output. GCN component cables are incompatible with the device, but even if they were gamers who used them would lose the ability to output audio through Wii because GCN component cables do not feature left/right audio.

Damn. Just looked at the AV out on the GC, and it's definitely not the same as the one on the Wii in the picture above. The GC one is not as long and has a notched grove on the top (for a notch on the plug).

Sorry, I didn't want to read the entire thread but I have a question. I would like to get a Wii for my 2 kids as a holiday gift. What are the best options for this?

They've said that they'll ship at least 4 million by Christmas/end of the year. It isn't going to be like it was with the 360. You'll be able to just walk in a store after the release and just buy one, just like it was with the Game Cube and other Nintendo released systems.
It might be a bit hard to get one on launch day, but I even doubt that.

You should have no problems getting one this holiday season, but if you're positive that you must have one, you might want to call some of the local game stores to find out when they will take pre-orders.

I wouldn't even recommend going to EB or Game Stop. It wouldn't shock me if some people who pre-order there don't get a system by Christmas, even if Nintendo ships out a bunch of them. The thought at EB/GS seems to be "pre-order now, and you'll get it whenever the hell we feel like giving it to ya".

I think that's a gross generalization that I completely disagree with. At my store we take pains to make sure people get copies of the games they reserved, even if it means losing a sale. Just yesterday I had to cancel several Pokemon pre-orders and send the people to other stores in my district because FedEx hadn't delivered our copies yet.

Then all EB/GS stores should have great people like you in charge or working there, because trust me, it sure isn't that way at some EB/GS stores I've ever been to. Not all of them are like what I said, obviously, but I've dealt with some first hand that are, and so have many other people.
EDIT:
I'll even share a positive story. I don't remember what the game was, but once I went to an EB/GS and while it wasn't something I pre-ordered, it was a game that was released that same day. The store I went to didn't have it, but they called another store that did have some in stock, and they drove the game to where I was, while I waited around the area.

The amount of people who actually have the right attitude to work in retail are far less than the amount of retail positions out there. Most people just care about their bottom line, not their customers. I agree it shouldn't be like that. I would say, if you ever have a problem with an associate, complain to the manager. If you ever have a problem with a manager, ask for the number of their district manager.

Well, since the wiigion-free rumor was squashed (BOO, HISS) I'm hoping that the Wii is as easy to modify as the Gamecube was.. a 25¢ switch from Radio Shack solder to just two pins gave you the option to go from a 100% English Cube to a 100% Japanese Cube. Though, I'll be honest, with the exception of Mr. Driller Drill Land, there weren't TOO many great imports to get (I think I have only four). On the other hand, my miser-like approach to waiting for PS2 games to drop to $20 is countered by all the cool imports I get.
