Xbox Live Marketplace passes 24 million downloads

E3 extravaganza drives traffic of content network to new heights
Microsoft has declared Xbox Live to be the world's largest platform for high-definition on-demand content, after a hugely successful E3 week saw over 1.5 million gamers connecting to the service.
Over 24 million pieces of content - ranging from game demos and videos to movie trailers, music videos and add-on content for popular games - have now been downloaded from the Xbox Live Marketplace service.
Five million of those were downloaded last week, when Microsoft's "E3: Bringing It Home" campaign allowed gamers around the world to access content which had been revealed for the first time at E3, including videos and demos of upcoming titles.
Over 600 terabytes of data were transferred over the network during the week, a figure which represents 30 times more data than is found in all the printed material in the US Library of Congress, according to Microsoft games boss Peter Moore, who thankfully did not go on to provide the standard British comparison of telling us how many double decker buses it equates to.
The success of the service during the week was also aided by a programme which allowed gamers to experience the Gold version of the Xbox Live service - normally reserved for subscription-paying members - for free, courtesy of sponsors Verizon in the USA and Adidas in Europe.
Unsurprisingly, the single most popular item downloaded from Xbox Live Marketplace during the week was the trailer video for Halo 3, but the rest of the download chart shows that playable demos are more popular than videos in general - with the playable demos of Lost Planet, Test Drive Unlimited and MotoGP '06 occupying places two through four respectively.
"Only Xbox Live could bring E3 home in high definition for consumers around the world," commented Peter Moore in an official statement today. "While others talk about online entertainment in the console space, we are delivering it in glorious high-definition to the millions of members we have across 24 countries."

No games warrant a purchase? Are you serious? Have you played GRAW? COD2? Oblivion?

I'd argue that, while the 360 has no clear launch title must-have, more good games have come out for the 360 in its initial months than any other system ever.
Have you actually played Oblivion, GR:AW, Project Gotham Racing, Call of Duty 2, Kameo, Dead or Alive 4, etc.?

Call of Duty 2 online has alone excited me more for the 360 than anything else. That coupled with Oblivion for single player and my gametime hours could be filled. When DOA4 and Burnout were added in they were just cream. Hell, even bloody Uno has taken more gaming time than i ever imagined it would.
For the first time since i was a kid playing with my buddies in an arcade or playing with friends in college have i touched that comraderie and fun that got me into video games as a child. As an adult with a family, job, and friends who are now scattered all over the united states and until Xbox Live i sincerely thought those days gaming and joking were a gone college experience. Now, and especially with the 360 online presence spanning games, i find myself playing Uno to chat with people online even moreso than play the actual game. DOA4 online was horrendous in that you would wait forever for your turn (and then Canis would change the gametype
) but watching someone else play and discussing the game and everything else brought back a flood of arcade memories. The only thing missing was a line of quarters on the glass, a Mountain Dew sticky controller, and the smell of urine (well, i played in a seedy arcade really). So in my opinion the games have been good, but even more than that is the Live service the games are played on.

The XBL experience with all the guys from this site who play has been amazing. My only problem is choosing which game to play.

The reasons Miyu mentioned are the reasons I love Live and I still play games now. Playing Uno is a blast. Its a simple, mindless game that everyone knows. The fun comes from the chatting and various rule changes you can play. The other actual games are fun, but you are focused more on the game play and not so much on the chatting.
I truly hope that Sony and Nintendo can have a system similar to Live so that people on those systems can have the same kind of experience. I don't think they will, but thats another issue.

Yeah, I would hate to turn this into a 360 vs sony vs nintendo, I think this one is better than that one, blah blah blah.
However its funny you should say what to did above cause my friend and I were just having a discussiion about this. We have had our 360's since launch and we are SO impressed and having so much fun with the 360 we have no, and I mean NO faith or desire in the "other" next gen machines.

Whew, glad to see people were agreeing with me. Hell for a moment there i thought i was going to shed a tear
Was afraid to ruin my gruff tough guy online image.
Speaking of CoD, what is your fav of the maps? Personally i'm jonesing for the one pay map that is from the silo mission. Sniping goLucky as he tries to scale that ladder repeatedly cracks me up. As does me climbing the ladder and making it to the top only to take a face full of shotty and see my corpse fall all the way down the ladder.

When i got the 360 i gave the original Xbox to my parents who run it through a RF Modulator to hook to their old TV to play KR and Halo.

Not to contradict myself, but I will agree with that.
I could see the chance of a wii finding its way into my house

I never owned a gamecube, however there were quite a few cube games I always wanted to try and this thing is going to be Backwards Compatible right? I will say this though. I am 32 years old and have been playing video games consistantly since pong came out. I am VERY used to conventional controllers, even though the wii's controller (s) look VERY inovative and interesting, I will have to actually try the controller out before i seriously consider buying the system.

I'm really close to picking up an Xbox360, but my main reason would be Arcade. However, if I download Arcade titles like Uno, Hearts, Backgammon and so on will I be able to play multiplayer with people in my house on one console or is the multiplayer limited to online only? The listing on the Xbox website seem to indicate the multiplayer as limited to online only. If this is true its a complete deal killer.

Doh. Yeah, of course that couldn't work. Don't know what I was thinking. I'll stick with the DS for this kind of stuff.

I'm glad they gave us so much stuff to download lately but I'd rather have that patch to download in the background before the next surge of content. I thought the news of that happening was pretty much set in stone and now there are gaming sites reporting it as rumors. I guess we won't know for sure until after the patch comes out.

I never complained about not having it before E3. I do think that it would of been nice to have it before all that content but I guess I can see why they felt the need to wait. Would it of been a little easier on their servers if the downloads only took up a small amount of bandwidth instead of having each user using a higher amount and watching that little status bar the whole time? I'm no expert so I can't really say. I ended up downloading most of the game trailers on my PC so I didn't rely on LIVE as much as I thought I would be.
The free gamerpics and themes more than made up for the loooong download times and numerous disconnects.

Well, I finally got the "Red Ring of Death Light" on my Original XBOX today.
I guess I gotta retire it now. It had been acting up for some time. I bought it several months after the launch so I guess I got some decent years out of it. I will miss some of my finished game saves.

Giantrobo, be thankful you lost yours to malfunction. My wife took mine and about 50+ games of mine just to be a bizatch when I got an order of protection against her. Luckily I took my 360 and PSP with me so she couldn't take those.

Xbox 360: Prey demo availability update
Posted: 05/19/06 09:48pm

One of the most talked about games from this years E3 for the Xbox 360 and PC's is coming to Xbox Live Marketplace as a 5 level demo.
When June 22nd roles around, download the demo to your Xbox 360 hard drive or to your PC for a very graciously long demonstration of Prey from Duke Nukem developer 3DRealms.
With both single and multiplayer aspects available in the demo, Prey falls short only under Duke Nukem Forever for one of the longest development cycles and numerous cancellations. By all impressions from E3, the wait may be well worth it.
