Moore reaffirms MS commitment to backwards compatibility
Ellie Gibson 08:50 13/06/2006
"My comments were not about nobody cares," says MS games boss
Xbox boss Peter Moore has gone on record to clear up confusion over comments he made recently regarding Xbox 360 backwards compatibility, claiming that they did not reflect a lack of commitment from Microsoft.
Speaking to Microsoft's Larry Hryb - who maintains a popular Xbox blog under the name Major Nelson - Moore said: "My words... That nobody's concerned about backwards compat were misinterpreted as no one cares about backwards compat; that's not the case at all."
"I want to be clear that my comments were not about nobody cares - of course we care, and we're going to continue to try and get as close as we can to our stated target of every Xbox game being backcompat to the 360, and I'm hopeful we get there."
According to Moore, the "emulation ninjas" are constantly working to add new titles to the list of games which will play on both the Xbox and Xbox 360. Next week will see the release of an update which adds another 20 games to the list - and while Moore wouldn't give too much away, he did say: "I can tell you two titles... Doom 3 and Lego Star Wars. Those will both be part of the list and there's a lot more than that."
Moore also took the opportunity to state, once again, how much he likes hanging around Internet forums to monitor consumer attitudes - including, specifically, our sister site Eurogamer.net.
"I do enjoy the UK sites, because those Brits are never shy about saying what they think," he commented, "and I do go on there, and particularly the Eurogamer threads seem to have deep threads which go hundreds deep very very quickly..."
"I do like to go particularly on the UK sites where the vitriolic, acerbic wit and sarcasm that's there just takes me back to my high school days."
You can download the entire interview from Major Nelson's blog.

It's good to see that MS is still working on BC. Hopefully some of my most-wanted games (Chronicles of Riddick, JSRF, Conker, Panzer Dragoon Orta) will show up in a future update.

I just read this article from Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/features/6152686/index.html
Is what they're saying true? 360 came out with 207 BC games supported and over the last 7 months some have been removed while others added and this batch of 27 they just released the first major update to BC? I'm not too optomistic about future updates, if that's true... Maybe the whole backlash to Moore's statement changed the future of BC.

I played through Lego Star Wars episode one with no problems. The only issue I found was that it was giving me black bars on the sides of the screen. I am running my 360 on a widescreen pc monitor and it did not fill the screen. I could force it to if I wanted. Doom 3 did not behave like this. There doesn't appear to be a widescreen setting in the game. But as far as game play, visualization and sound, everything worked fine.

I think it depends on the game. I know for a fact that KOTOR II, DARKWATCH, and Crimson Skies all have black bars on the 360 however Star Wars:Battlefront II does not. I'm not sure why because they all have 480p listed adn checked off. Oddly enough, DARKWATCH has 480p listed but it's blacked out. I asked about that before but no one can tell me what that means. Is it still 480p? I know 480 doesn't mean automatic widescreen.

Exactly. You can have 480p and not be anamorphic.

Great little study done by CAG showing that only 27% of the 300 top-reviewed (per Metacritic) Xbox games are BC on the 360.

I'd love to see someone do they same thing but based on sales numbers. Chris?

I've had my 360 for over 6 months now and I just figured out that if you have the parental controls turned on to any level, you will not see any "not-rated" content in the marketplace.
I'm now downloading a shit load of content.

I've been wanting to get some of the new content for Oblivion. I got the wizards tower just fine. The thieves den was the one I wanted but it never showed up. I then went over to the xbox live forums and searched around till I found the answer. When I called support a few weeks ago they attributed it to different content for different regions. But now I know different.

I am still incredibly busy with the All Time Sales Spreadsheet, because I'm linking each game title to Wikipedia, plus I'm showing the overall score of each game and linking that to GameRankings.com. Plus I'm also including the year that the game was released.
It is a fun project I'm doing, but that website updated their sales figures in May and also added more than 50 games, some new and some old.
But let me see what I can do, but it won't be until after I'm done with my current project.

Ahhh that makes sense. I thought it was really weird (or you just didn't know what the hell you were doing) that the download was still not available to you. But maybe your discovery will help the countless thousands of people out there that may be suffering the same fate!

I noticed the Street Fighter 2 theme and pictures are up but still not the game. Any idea when it is going to be on there? I am also having a picture trying to use one of the Entourage theme pictures for my gamer ID. Any idea why this would be a problem?
