Honestly, one of the most important things for me is that most of the games seem to still have that essence of the 16 bit era. In other words 2D gaming with 3D gaming where it applies.
One of the things I was worried about was that with this next generation of handheld gaming will come a whole slew of substandard ugly looking 3D games. That is one reason why I really like the GBA is because of the types of games that come out for it.
Call it nostalgia or whatever but I really do enjoy 2D gaming ESPECIALLY on a handheld. I don't know how well 3D gaming will work on a handheld. I might be sick from playing it on such a tiny screen.

Ah.. seeing the original GBA makes me remember how much I miss it's form. Much more comfortable in my opinion. However, I don't miss buying batteries!! Nice to see the DS going back to a horizontal form while keeping the things that make the SP superior (light, recharging, self-protected screen). Closed it doesn't look like it'll be much different in size from the original GBA.

Yeah, it only looks a tad bigger than the original GBA and I carried one of those around all the time. It won't fit in a pocket as easily as the SP, but it is still pretty portable.

Nintendo's Revolution will follow PS3 timescale, says Fils-Aime

Slams Microsoft again for moving too quickly towards next generation
Nintendo of America's charismatic VP of sales and marketing Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed that the company is aiming to launch its next home console in the same timeframe as Sony's PS3, and attacked Microsoft's "rush" to the next generation.
"Our focus is this: we will bring Revolution to the marketplace roughly at the same time as the competition," Fils-Aime told US website IGN. "We are driving our timetables based on what we believe Sony will do."
While Nintendo may be watching Sony to work out when to jump on the next generation, the company is less sold on Microsoft's approach. "Not that I want to ignore the Xbox," Fils-Aime qualified, "but certainly we believe that a rush to a new system is a mistake."
This is the second time in recent months that a senior Nintendo executive has attacked Microsoft's seeming haste in moving to a next-generation platform - speaking at the ELSPA Game Summit in London last June, former Nintendo Europe boss David Gosen said that "in every cycle, some manufacturer not profiting from the current cycle is eager to kick-start the next one," and suggested that profitability was not Microsoft's "key motivation" with the Xbox.
Fils-Aime also confirmed that the forthcoming Nintendo DS handheld could potentially be used to link up with the GameCube console, and will almost certainly boast link features with the Revolution platform.
"Could there be interactivity with GameCube?" he said. "Potentially. Depends on the software and accessories needed from a GameCube perspective. But it's certainly possible. Could there be interaction with the Revolution? Certainly possible. Certainly capable."
I guess this is as good a place as any to put this story!

Those of you comparing the DS to Sega's Game Gear are forgetting what a chunk that thing was. I still have mine. It's more than twice the size of the original GBA. Add six AA batteries (for 2-3 hours gameplay...woo!) and you have yourself a gen-u-ine arm stretcher. I also had the Power Back, which gave you 3-4 rechargable hours, but also added like two pounds. Ugh.
The screen was pretty big, but the contrast was terrible, making everything look washed out. There were some good games on the system, though, which is why I still have it.

I sense a little bitterness from Nintendo over Microsoft's ability to put something on the market that can lose millions of dollars with no negative impact on the company. Like Nintendo has never profited bigtime from a monopoly.
Anyway, there is risk to the MS plan. They could either pull off a Sega Saturn/Dreamcast like disaster or a PS2 like success. If Nintendo is only worried about Sony then don't even mention the Xbox 2.

I don't think the PS2 success thing is likely to happen. Sony was on top with the PSone and people simply waited for it rather than buying a Dreamcast due to brand loyalty.
Sony still has that going into next gen. MS doesn't have near the following with the X-box going into the next generation that Sony had with the PSone coming into this generation.
That said, I don't expect a Saturn/DC failure either. I figure most people that bought an X-box will buy an X-box 2, but not many new customers. They'll just battle Nintendo again for a distant second place.

After watching the 16 minute Mario demo at gamespot I am totally sold. I will buy this just to play that game. And those wonderful minigames...coupled with Wario Ware DS? Twitch heaven.

As a PC gamer exclusively for the last decade, I have become more interested in the DS the more I have read about it. Could someone who follows console more closely tell me approximately how long it takes between introduction and the first price reduction? Thanks.

Now the question is where should I preorder it from, and should I sell my SP or keep it?

Price drops do happen at other random times, but those are far and away the two most frequent times for console price drops.
