That's one thing I think Nintendo of America has really dropped the ball on. Multiple color choices is a really neat option they should always offer on their systems.

What? I want something with a lot of black in it!

Yes, at launch there will only be the silver/black version that you see everywhere. They know we're stupid enough to buy now and then see a cranberry-colored version six months later to which we say, "Ooooh!!! I've gotta get me some of that!"

The image is in the "sponsors" folder, so more than likely it's more of Nintendo's odd advertising.

some Animal Crossing DS news:

It will support four players and WiFi.

October 29, 2004 - Nintendo today revealed some new details about the Japanese version of Animal Crossing DS, known in Japan under the tentative name of Doubutsu no Mori DS.

Only a few details have been revealed on the game. You'll once again find yourself living in a village, taking up residence in your very own home. The game looks like one would expect of an Animal Crossing game, with a similar color palette and those trademark balloon-headed characters. Nintendo has even managed to keep the 3D perspective in the move to the portable.
Animal Crossing represents the perfect chance for Nintendo to show off the NDS's trademark features, and it seems like Nintendo will be doing just that. The WiFi functionality of the system will let as many as four players play together, walking around in the same village. Players will be able to chat using the touch screen and show off their own rooms. The touch screen is also used for menu selection, which should make for a fast interface.

just curious, if 'touching is good'

I always hear people bitching about the littlest things when it came to the SP (or GBA) screen, be it a speck of dust, scratches, fingerprints, etc

how much complaining is going to go on when they now have something much more prone to problems like a touch screen

am I to understand the only people complaining are this younger demo they are no longer catering to

Really looking forward to getting both a DS and a PSP. I play my GBA a lot more than either my GC or PS2, so two new handhelds is great news. I've got a bunch of store credit stockpiled to cover both systems.

On the topic of multiple color choices... bright colors and gimmicky designs perpetuate the perception of video game systems as toys. Whether or not to diverge from the accepted silvers, grays, and blacks traditionally associated with consumer electronics is a strategic marketing choice that needs to be made with target demographics firmly in mind. It worked for Apple, but game consoles are not on a level playing field with computers...

The roles are reversed in Nintendo's latest NDS game. The company has announced Super Princess Peach for the NDS, and this time Princess Peach is the one doing the platforming.

In Super Princess Peach, Mario has been kidnapped. You take control of Princess Peach and must work your way through a series of 2D side scrolling stages in order to save the classic mascot character. You select your level via a world map not unlike that of Yoshi's Island and can enter Toad's shop to purchase items.

Peach isn't alone in her platforming adventure. She has at her side Kassaa, a magical umbrella. Kassaa can be used for a variety of actions, from striking enemies, to helping Peach float. Kassaa is a happy umbrella and always seems to smile.

It's currently a bit unclear how Nintendo will go about using the NDS's second screen with this title. Currently, it seems that the top screen will show Princess Peach's face as you play. Based on the current situation in the game, Peach's facial expression will change, and the actions she can perform will follow.

Screenshots make this game look just like a Super Nintendo or Game Boy Advance style platformer, with similar art style and classic Nintendo characters. Of course, seeing Princess Peach in a starring role is certainly different enough that we'll have to take a closer look.

A release date has yet to be set, neither in America nor Japan.

Hoo boy.... I don't want to stir up the hornets' nest here but Princess Peach and Kirby?!?! I thought the DS was their more "mature" and upscale console. Honestly guys how can ANY male older than 13 want to play a game where you are a princess and fight enemies with your umbrella? And you save mario this time? Innovative!

Maybe I'm getting too old for all this.

Perhaps if you realized a game is not so much what it's about then how it's about you would understand what truly makes a good game. Sadly, most of America is the same way, good games with "cute" graphics or concepts are shunned while bad games where you kill other humans sell like crazy. Americans can only see the cover of the book, not what's inside.

I realize the game may be "fun" but characters are a big part of a game to me. If game characters weren't important they could just be tetris blocks running around and platforming. The characters don't have to be mindless killers on a rampage but they don't have to look like they're straight out of Toys R Us either. ICO is the best example of this. Practically no violence and great character design and art direction. Viewtiful Joe was also a really cool game with arguably kiddie graphics but I did not have to play as a princess with an umbrella or as a pink blob with a propeller cap.

Read this article. It pretty much sums up my feelings on Nintendo.

edit: actually I just ordered katamari damacy. Off-beat does not equal "kiddy" in my book (eg.Ren and Stimpy)

Consider it stirred.

I'm a 30 yo married male, and I don't judge my games on how they look but how they play. As I've mentioned before, I really dislike the 3D Mario games (except Luigi's Mansion for some reason) and the thought of any Mario-esqu sidescrolling adventure is a good thing in my book.

You probably also wouldn't like Katamari Damacy. I picked this up over the weekend and the graphics are incredibly kiddy looking. But it is the most fun I have had playing a video game in ages. I dare anyone to play the Cancer the Crab level (the constellation) and not giggle incessantly as you chase down those poor crabs.

And you're only as old as you think you are.
