Re: Writers Strike 2023
I think most of the morning and afternoon shows are returning with new seasons this week but how are Kelly and Mark and Drew Barrymore going to fill the time with almost little or none celebrity guests?
I do see Jake Gyllenhaal scheduled for some shows but he has a book out and wonder if that violates the creed of being on strike?

Not a surprise. A bunch of top TV producers had their deals suspended by WB.
You're not going to pay someone's company to write and develop shows when there are 2 strikes going.

SAG and WGA rallying to get a bill passed for strikers for get Unemployment insurance in California.
Currently in CA, you don't qualify for UI for striking. I saw several reports that many not so well off writers and actors are really struggling right now.

Greg Berlanti donated about $500K to help some of his staffers who are currently out of work.

Ryan Murphy also did the same.

Did they pay in? (I'm guessing "no".) It's unemployment INSURANCE, not a random government benefit. Your (well, most people's) employer pays in to the system for you (and every covered worker).

Yeah they walked off the job.. you don't get unemployment for that. Nor should you. But hey this the movie industry - they are better than everyone else and deserve to get paid whether they choose to work or not... I guess.

Drew Barrymore is bringing back her talk show on air with no writers and no promotion of movies or TV shows.
The WGA is not happy with her decision. Writers think she's scabbing. see the comments on this X post.

Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea for Drew Barrymore to resume her show. She’s getting hammered as a scab. I’m sure her non SAG and non WGA staff appreciate having their jobs back. But, her reputation has taken a big hit.

That's all because they are afraid this will be the start of something. People aren't going to want to sit around another year while their union doesn't budge - but at the same time they don't dare speak out against their union.

I'm actually surprised talk shows have stayed off the air for so long. The last writers strike, the late night talk shows were back on the air, sans writers, about 60 days after the strike started.

I think this time, the double-whammy of both WGA and SAG-AFTRA on strike means that even if they go back, there will be hardly anyone to interview, so even "fluff" interviews are mostly out, so there's no "there" there for a talk show.

Yeah, with the actors striking, too, there are no actors out promoting their movies and tv shows.
If they did come back, it would be a lot of musicians, athletes, models, and social media personalities. Maybe a few news anchors and politicians thrown in, too.

These talk shows have writers rooms that are under the union, right? So are they just going on the air without writers (ie: no skits just guests) or are they really scabbing?

Ellen came back last time even though there were all kinds of complaints from union members.. but she did it and seems to have gotten through it OK. Then some of the last night people came back...
I think I heard this morning that 4 or 5 more of these talk shows are going to come back. Also SAG is ok with Drew coming back but WGA is not.
I think it's a good thing they are coming back (even though I don't watch them). Keeps people getting a paycheck and I'm sure they are going to use it to highlight the work SAG and WGA does.

She's not crossing the picket line, I was wondering about her writers. But if it's just interviews and not skits and openings and such it makes sense. SAG is not onboard as in they'll let other actors come on, right?

Actors don't have to be promoting anything to show up on the show; they could just hang out. But I'd guess most actors would prefer just staying home to going on talk shows.

Re: Writers Strike 2023
I think the WGA's stance is a bit more nuanced:
It's mostly a notice that "we're going to be picketing it, and there better not be any scabbing."
Drew Barrymore's staff threw out two audience members who had WGA pins on, which spurred a backlash.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv...ut-1235587064/
The @DrewBarrymoreTV Show is a WGA covered, struck show that is planning to return without its writers. The Guild has, and will continue to, picket struck shows that are in production during the strike. Any writing on “The Drew Barrymore Show” is in violation of WGA strike rules.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv...ut-1235587064/
Two audience members, who had signed up for free tickets to the taping, were handed WGA pins by picketers as they walked in the door and say they were asked to leave before the show began because they were wearing the pins....
“It is our policy to welcome everyone to our show tapings. Due to heightened security concerns today, we regret that two audience members were not permitted to attend or were not allowed access. Drew was completely unaware of the incident and we are in the process of reaching out to the affected audience members to offer them new tickets,” a spokesperson for The Drew Barrymore Show wrote in a statement to THR.
The two later joined the picket lines outside, donning WGA shirts, as Turiczek said, “If they think we’re part of the strike, we might as well be.” Carter added that she had signed up for tickets as a fan of Barrymore but now has been “disheartened” by the experience.
“It really has changed my perspective on her and the show in general,” Carter said. “I’ve been completely alarmed and disheartened by this whole process.”

Drew Barrymore dropped as host of National Book Awards
Drew Barrymore's recent decision to resume her talk show amid the ongoing writers strike has the literary world talking.
The National Book Foundation revealed in an X post Tuesday that Barrymore – who was previously tapped to emcee the 74th annual National Book Awards – has been dropped as host following her announcement that production on "The Drew Barrymore Show" will resume.
"The National Book Awards is an evening dedicated to celebrating the power of literature and the incomparable contributions of writers to our culture," the foundation wrote. "In light of the announcement that ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ will resume production, the National Book Foundation has rescinded Ms. Barrymore’s invitation to host the 74th National Book Awards Ceremony."

A few other talk shows aside from Drew like The Talk, Jennifer Hudson and Maher are resuming filming with no writers. The WGA is fuming from the articles I read. I guess they think this undermines their goals going on strike.
I don’t recall the WGA being this upset back in 2007-08 when they resumed talk shows with no writers. And these are talk shows. They are quickly dated and assume the writers are just paid whatever their day rates are. There’s no residuals and back end profits.
