It's actually been over 5 years since they've done Celebrity Jeopardy, I wonder if they'll ever do it again? I always enjoyed it.

A: The only person who should rightfully take over hosting Jeopardy!, and someone who Alex Trebek calls his favorite impersonation.

The games so far this season have generally not been very good. I think the show has a smaller pool of contestants to draw from, and the producers are putting lower-quality players on the show. This week it seems that the clues have gotten easier.

Pretty much all the contestants this season have been from California (though some disguise it by saying originally from...), though I noticed one from Las Vegas this week. But until they bring back the pre-Covid champ, it'll probably be somewhat slimmer pickings

Oh THAT's whats going on. Makes sense now. I thought the contestants have been sort of....lacking?

Although that one final jeopardy question I thought it was kind of harsh not to count William Tell when they were looking for William Tell Overture.

One of my colleagues works on Jeopardy and I worked with her yesterday. I asked her how things were going and she gave no indication that Trebek was gravely ill. She said they recorded a bunch of episodes in the can. So you’ll still see him a few more months at least.

"Jeopardy!" says Alex hosted episodes will air through December 25th. His last day taping in the studio was October 29.

It's too early to discuss possible replacements, BUT...

Whoever it is, they'll have one heck of a tough act to follow.

I wouldn't want the gig.

I dont think that he would take it, but the only person I could think of that would possibly work is Jake Tapper.

You need someone that is entertaining, but also seems smart enough to dole out the questions and answers, so that rules out the usual path of finding comedians to fill these slots.

Interesting. They can thank Howard Stern for planting the seed on that one.

This was in May.

Howard didn’t hesitate to suggest a more relaxing gig: taking over for Alex Trebek as the host of “Jeopardy!” The move made perfect sense to Howard as George is both a well-respected TV personality and a brilliant Rhodes Scholar.

“Do you ever watch ‘Jeopardy!’?” Howard asked.

“Sure,” George responded.

“Are you able to answer most of the questions?” Howard wondered.

“I don’t know about most, and I don’t know how I’d do on the buzzer, but, you know, we all play along at home,” he said.

“Would you take that job?” Howard wondered.

Ever the communications professional, Stephanopoulos stayed diplomatic. “I think it would be a lot of fun, but I like what I’m doing, too,” he concluded. “I’m not going to be Shermanesque about it but, you know, it’s a great show.”

Mo Rocca? He's a smart guy, a bit of a comedian but not too much for the gig. He has hosted the Geography Bee since 2016 (which Trebek hosted from 1989-2013).

I haven't seen him in years, but Burton seems like a good choice. Whoever it is should have the right combination of solemnity, affability, dry humour, and self-deprecation that Trebek had.

Wow, amazing to think that Trebek was able to work until ten days ago. Talk about dedication and being a trooper. Were I dying of terminal cancer, I'd spend my last months exclusively with my loved ones.

Oooh, I like this idea. I think I posted it in the main Trebek thread, but he himself said Ben Mankiewicz would be an excellent host.

Did they know he wasn't coming back? Did he know he wasn't coming back? I really wonder how that all went down. I really kind of hope they were able to have some kind of closure with him and he with Jeopardy.

I would be very surprised if they didn't already choose someone. Or at the very least narrow it down to a very select few. Like I said a few weeks ago it really seemed like Trebek was hinting that Ken Jennings would be taking over. Of course that could just mean that he's in the running. Or maybe it was just a joke.

Hailey G 11-10-20 06:20 AM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

If Ken Jennings is the new host, he can't participate in future tournaments of champions, so you lose a selling point of those events, and basically hand the victory in them to James Holzhauer.

I guess you could have a guest host on the tournament so that Ken can participate, but do you really want someone new stepping into the role for one of your most important and highly rated events?

Bandoman 11-10-20 07:42 AM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I don't think Ken would care about not being able to compete if he get this sweet gig. And he appears to be the most palatable replacement since he is well known to the audience, is likeable, and was friendly with Trebek and will be properly deferential to his memory.

I think that using Ken to give the clues in some of the Jeopardy categories this year is a signal that he is the choice to be the next host.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Trebek told TMZ in 2018 that he would like LA Kings announcer Alex Faust or CNN legal analyst Laura Coates to replace him.

Either of them would be good... as would Ken Jennings.

They shouldn't even consider George.

Levar Burton would be good too.

We'll see.

He's 63... he could go for quite a few years... but I agree, they need someone younger as this show is never going to go away. ;)

Yeah, assuming that he's great in the role, then a few years later, he's 70? Someone like Ken Jennings could have a 25 year run.

I wasn't even considering whether or not Ken would care about not being able to compete, but rather whether an event like that without Ken competing could hurt them in the ratings.

Ken is also rumored, -or perhaps it's confirmed at this point, -to be part of the rotating experts (along with the other Jeopardy GOATs) on ABC's version of "The Chase".

I haven't been impressed with Ken's appearances in the show giving out answers. I don't think has the "host" x-factor yet.

Though those answers did seem too long and wordy for Jeopardy.

Mike86 11-10-20 02:11 PM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Yeah, being a knowledgeable contestant, and close to Alex doesn’t necessarily equate to him being fit to host. I wouldn’t rule him out entirely, but not sure.

I think someone with more experience on television and in a hosting role would be good.

I get that LeVar Burton is older so maybe that’s a knock against him, but at the same time he could feasibly go probably ten to fifteen years at least if he has no health issues.

Crocker Jarmen 11-10-20 02:17 PM

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Doesn't Ken Jennings officially work for Jeopardy, with the title of "consulting producer"? I would think that already disqualifies him from competing again on any of their programs.
