Very impressive performance by Brad Rutter tonight to earn a spot in the title match.

indeed..it will be a good game against ken..

Goldberg74 05-23-05 06:23 PM

Game 1 of 3 is over... and it was a pretty good game.

All three got the FJ question right.

All three have around the same amount with a difference of about $2-3k... Rutter is in the lead and Ken is in 3rd.

calhoun07 05-23-05 06:49 PM

Ken is going to have to start doing some major wagering here, not his pansy ass wagers for Final Jeopardy he did before. He's in the big leagues now. If they keep on playing this close, it will be anybody's game come the third day.

astrochimp 05-23-05 07:13 PM

Good first day, nice to see Ken have to work a little ;)

gnradd21 05-23-05 11:09 PM

Besides being uber-smart, Brad's got this quick, jumpy way he rings in. At first it irritated me but it obviously works for him. Ken had better step it up or he's in deep doo-doo :D .

Red Dog 05-24-05 09:45 AM

These guys are good. Evenly matched too. I was just happy that I was able to get one of the Before During & After questions - I usually struggle with Before & After questions.

Chew 05-24-05 11:41 AM

An awful easy Final Jeopardy question for the first day of the final round.

If you knew it, it must have been. I had no clue. Never heard of the quote/expression.

It was talked about constantly during the period between Reagan's death and funeral.

I only watched about an hour or two of the coverage the day of the procession along the Mall. Wasn't interested in anything else.

Missed the show. What was it?

Goldberg74 05-24-05 05:40 PM

Game 2 is over. Tough game all around.

Final Jeopardy was kind of tough, with only getting it right.

Spoiler:
Jerome -> Day 2: $3,200 + Day 1: $17,600 = $19,600 (3rd Place; $18,800 off the leader)

Ken -> Day 2: $10,000 + Day 1: $16,000 = $26,000 (2nd Place; $12,400 off the leader)

Brad -> Day 2: $20,000 + Day 1: $18,400 = $38,400 (1st Place)

Tune into tomorrow for the winner of the $2M.

For clarification Alec made it a point to say that the winner gets $2M, second place gets $500,000 and third place gets $250,000.

As I mentioned above, I missed yesterday's show, but thought this Final Jeopardy question was rather easy, at least compared to the questions they all seemingly breezed through the rest of the show. I was surprised to see two of them miss.

astrochimp 05-24-05 06:59 PM

Good match and certainly alot more interesting this time around rather than watching Ken having it locked up before the 1st commercial break ;)

TheMadMonk 05-24-05 08:17 PM

Gonna be real tough for
Spoiler:
Ken to catch Brad
now, but should be interesting.

monkyskunk 05-24-05 09:33 PM

Ken better get lucky tomorrow and hit on those daily doubles or other wise I don't think he will have any chance of catching up with Brad.

It was an easy question. I'm not sure the exact wording, but it was basically asking what phrase John Winthrop used to describe the Mass. colony.

The answer was "City on a hill".

Red Dog 05-25-05 08:46 AM

Brad's on fire. I knew that the FJ had something to do with the movie The Ten Commandmants, but the only name I could think of was Charleston Heston, and I knew he didn't die in 1959.

Chew 05-25-05 09:16 AM

It seems like Ken has a dazed look to him during this tourney. It's going to have to be a Ken blowout today for him to pull out the overall victory.

djbrown 05-25-05 11:44 AM

yeah, Ken has to enter FJ with like 6k more than Brad or Brad doesn't even have to wager a dime and he'll win.

Red Dog 05-25-05 11:47 AM

I think having a free pass all the way into the final hurts Ken. These guys all the know the answer to most of the questions. It all comes down to speed and whoever is lucky enough to pick the DDs.

Nefarious 05-25-05 02:14 PM

I agree. This has been mostly a contest of timing and less about who knows more than who. I wonder why they did 3 days instead of the whole week? Would have given more of a chance to catch-up. As it is, one bad day of final jeopardy has all but eliminated the other two.

calhoun07 05-25-05 04:11 PM

Did Ken get a free pass? I thought I recall hearing Alex say on an episode recently that Ken had to buy his way into the tournament. Either way, I was disappointed they didn't make Ken work his ways through the ranks like everybody else.

Goldberg74 05-25-05 04:12 PM

Jerome went through every level of the competition.

Brad had a first round bye.

Ken had a bye all the way to the Finals.

Goldberg74 05-25-05 05:35 PM

Game over.

Here's the FJ question:

These names of two original Mercury Astronauts who orbited the Earth in 1962 and 1963 are also occupations.

Spoiler:
Jerome had $8,300 going into FJ. He said Who are Carpenter and Shepherd? which was wrong. He bet $7,300 which took him down to $1,000 for a 3-Day total of $20,600.

Ken had $9,400 going into FJ. He wrote Who are Cooper and Shepherd? Go Brad!, but that too was wrong. He wagered $801, which took his total to $8,599 and a 3-Day total af $34,599.

Brad had a comfortable lead going into FJ of $23,600. He said Who were Carpenter and Cooper? which was right, but he wagered $0 and stayed at $23,600 for the day. Tack on his previous winnings and he's at $62,000 for a 3-Day haul.

Brad takes the $2M prize and the title of "Highest Winning Gameshow Contestant". Ken settles for another $500k and Jerome waltzes away with $250k.

That's that.

Jboone 05-25-05 06:35 PM

I got a big laugh when Ken responded correctly with "No Sleep till Brooklyn". Who knew he was a big Beastie Boys fan.

worrywort 05-25-05 09:33 PM

Ken's probably has the ringtone on his Cingular phone.

Norm de Plume 05-25-05 09:45 PM

Too bad. I don't watch Jeopardy very often, but I was hoping Jennings would win again. The guy who won seems a bit weasely, whereas Jennings always has an "aw shucks" humility about him. He even had the class to write words of encouragement to the winner on his slate during Final Jeopardy.

Charlie Goose 05-25-05 11:13 PM

That was just embarassing. After dominating the show for months, Ken gets his ass handed to him three consecutive games.

This Brad guy, is he a five-time champ from back when there was a limit? So, he's never lost a game?

Jeremy517 05-25-05 11:27 PM

Ken probably would have had a better chance if he had to work his way through all the rounds that everyone else had to. He could have gotten his timing with the buzzer back.

Bill Needle 05-25-05 11:33 PM

Maybe Ken would have done better without being out of the loop for so long. He seems like a real momentum player. But Brad was a freaking machine, and handed Ken his ass.

calhoun07 05-26-05 01:16 AM

Even when Ken was playing before, whenever they had a break, it seemed it took Ken a bit to get back into his routine, and that was up against regular players. I kinda felt sorry for him, trying to get back into his routine and find his momentum when these players already had it going, especially Brad.

I think it would be interesting to see how Brad would do on the series now without any limits of how long he can keep winning. I wonder if he could surpass Ken's record for consequtive games played?

djbrown 05-26-05 08:54 AM

correct. He also won the $1 million Jeopardy! Masters Tournament a few years back as well.

Red Dog 05-26-05 09:03 AM

That was probably one of the best FJ trick questions ever. I said Carpenter and Shepard, so they suckered me in.

So who thinks Brad will be invited back to compete on regular shows to see if he can make a run at Ken's record?

das Monkey 05-26-05 09:14 AM

Red Dog

I would like to see that. Winning a three-day tournament and making a Ripken-esque run like Ken did are two different things. It would be interesting to see how well Brad could do over the longterm.

das

Goldberg74 05-26-05 09:30 AM

To me there is a difference between Ken's winnings and Brad's winnings.

Ken won $2.5M over the course of 75+ games, earning it all along the way.

Brad won $155,102 in his 5-day streak, and was handed $3M for winning two tournaments.

Seems a little lopsided to me.

When Brad won the $155,102, was it when the questions were half as much or were they $200-$1000 and $400-$2000?
