Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

As news of the passing of beloved “Jeopardy!” game-show host Alex Trebek continues to ripple through the entertainment industry and trivia community alike, many are wondering: After nearly four decades at the helm, who could possibly replace Alex Trebek?

For one out of two of the respondents to a 2019 Morning Consult poll, that answer is: no one. Just months after Trebek disclosed his Stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis, half of those surveyed last July said they couldn’t imagine watching “Jeopardy!” without him as the host. Sources with knowledge of the situation say that Sony Pictures Television, the studio behind “Jeopardy!”, has had internal long-term discussions about succession long before Trebek’s diagnosis as the longtime host neared retirement age.

But when the show is ready to get back into production, one frontrunner has long appeared quite clear. The easygoing and quick-witted Ken Jennings, who was earlier this year crowned the champion of the “Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time” tournament in a matchup between him, James Holzhauer and Brad Rutter, is a fan favorite for the spot. He was first catapulted into the spotlight in the mid-aughts with a famous 74-game win streak and is a (distant) second to Trebek when it comes to being synonymous with the show.

That Sony brought Jennings on board in September as a consulting producer for “Jeopardy!” also indicates that track has been laid for Jennings to potentially succeed Trebek. And he certainly has no plans to return to the stage as a contestant — in a January interview with Variety, Jennings said that he was hanging up his buzzer.

“It’s not like how running backs pretty much have to retire at 29 because their bodies fall apart,” he said, regarding his decision. “But in this case I had noticed myself slowing down – mostly [in the way of] recall, no longer automatically quick to remember names and facts like I used to. And I notice it every day; it’s like living inside ‘Flowers for Algernon’ – you feel a tiny bit dumber every day, as I move into my 40s. And I think there’s a reason why all the big ‘Jeopardy!’ champs are men and women around 30.”

Jennings also said then that it “just wouldn’t feel right” to compete without Trebek there.

“I don’t see how I can top it,” he said in January. “The win was great. It’s a great punctuation mark, and I absolutely mean what I said about not wanting to play past my prime. And at some point Alex is going to retire, I assume, and it just wouldn’t feel right to play with a different host. It’d be like cheating on Alex. I think this is a perfect time to go out on top.”

Of course, Jennings, Holzhauer and Rutter already have prior commitments — all three have been tapped to co-star in ABC quiz show “The Chase,” which will be hosted by Sara Haines.

A number of more famous names are also being floated as potential new hosts, including CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. According to a person familiar with the matter, Cooper is not currently pursuing the position, although the prospect has come up for discussion in the past. Another name in the mix is George Stephanopoulos, though it is not clear that any active discussions with the ABC News anchor have taken place. In May, the TV journalist told Howard Stern that he thought it “would be a lot of fun, but I like what I’m doing, too.”

Sony Pictures Television has no doubt cast a wide net, though a spokesperson would only say that the show is not announced a new host at this time.

Honestly, I did not ask her how he was or how he looked. She posted a very somber note about learning of his passing. He must have taken a turn for the worse for him to die only 10 days after a production hiatus.

I didn't realize that Jennings had basically retired from competing,

His words about no wanting to "cheat on" Alex, would seem to conflict with actually taking the job himself though.

Obviously a joke. The point is, they aren’t going to hire someone old as a replacement just to have them die in a few years and have to go through the whole thing again.

Hosting Jeopardy isn't like appointing a Supreme Court Justice. Just because Alex Trebek hosted the show for 36 years until his death doesn't mean that his replacement has to do the same thing. I don't think anyone expects Drew Carey to host The Price is Right for 35 years. He may end up doing it for that long, but I doubt that was one of the requirements or expectations when he was hired to do the show.

So they were at least on a hiatus. I guess that's good. So maybe he didn't really get to say goodbye to the production staff.

I think for the rest of this season they should have guest hosts filling in for a week or two at a time so they can see which one is more favorable. A number of people have been suggested in articles as a possible replacement. Rosie Perez's name has come up. I have a hard time differentiating her from her role in the movie "It Could Happen to You" and can't picture her as being anything but whiny and high pitched.

George Stephanopoulos is too associated with politics and he would change the feel of a show in a bad way. I don't know much about Joe Rogan, but he seems more like a loud mouthed jock.

The other two that come up as the most suggested are Jennings and Levar Burton. They would seem like the best choice out of the ones above that have been suggested thus far. I was concerned with how Jennings delivered some of the clues in the video segments he was on recently, but maybe it just takes some practice and time to get it right. He seems the most liked out of those associated with Jeopardy and would likely be accepted as a replacement without a lot of resistance from the audience. Levar Burton would be a good choice as well. He has a lot of fans across various genres, from TNG to Roots to The Reading Rainbow that could draw in viewers.

I've never seen the movie, but I went and watched the clip of her on Jeopardy in the movie. I still don't get her being considered for the hosting job because she did a movie scene that used the show in the movie she was in. Her accent seem somewhat strong even when not acting in a role. I would expect someone that hosted this type of show be able to clearly annunciate words without too much of a regional accent coming through when they were speaking. if they want to go with someone whose character in a show of movie was on Jeopardy then I would prefer they use John Ratzenberger as host. He would actually be an interesting host, at least as a guest host.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

It’s funny seeing fans campaign and put up petitions, without regard for that person’s actual wants or career goals. Ken Jennings has repeatedly said that playing the game and hosting are completely separate skill sets. Maybe he was being polite, but it’s a robotic reaction when people say he’s the only choice. As for Levar Burton, sure I think he’d be great, but what if he’s just not interested? How does it feel for him with all the hype and he declines, or doesn’t even get it.

Reminds me of when everyone kept wanting different comedians to take over The Daily Show. Nobody wanted it, because those were big shows to fill. One such person even told Twitter to stop saying she should host, saying that people were acting like they knew her better than she knew herself.

It was weird seeing him without his visor, especially in scenes on TNG. He looks different now so that won't be as much of an issue. I just watched a recent interview with him on Youtube and his voice sounded much different as well. if I had my eyes closed and someone asked me to identify the voice from the interview, I don't think I would have been able to come up with Levar Burton.

I know they were trying to be PC when they started calling Vanna White a "cohost", but how is what she does really any different than whet Diane Parkinson or Janice Pennington other than responding to something Pat Sajak says at the end of every episode?

Unlike the two you mentioned, Vanna has hosted the show while Pat had surgery.

Yes, but other than those few episodes, I would not consider her a host or cohost. Pat Sajak's daughter was touching the letters while Vanna was hosting. I would not consider his daughter to be a host or cohost during that time.

Here's what I'll say about their pick - going with a bad choice will alienate long-time viewers. I religiously watched Bob Barker's Price Is Right for years. When they decided on Drew Carey as Bob's replacement, I gave up ever watching the show after a few weeks. They lost a loyal supporter.

For many, many viewers, Alex Trebek was Jeopardy. A lot of the celebrity suggestions bandied about here just sound off. I'm likely to drop Jeopardy completely if they go with anyone else but Ken Jennings. I know it won't happen, but I'd be willing to accept a complete unknown over a washed-up celebrity.

This is exactly why Ken makes sense. He's already in the Jeopardy family. It's not like they're going to get a sudden boost of viewership if they choose a popular celebrity. I'm sure they're aware they have to play the long game. Of course noone can replace Trebek but I think someone who can command a similar respect while still being able to have fun and laugh at himself is key. I think Anderson Cooper and George Stephanopolous would be incredibly boring. I think LeVar Burton would be a good choice as well. He has a good balance between professionalism and fun.

It says they will have a series of guest hosts from "within the Jeopardy family". I wonder if that means we will also get Jimmy and Sarah gust hosting some episodes.

You must not be a sports fan at all. Original ESPN anchor. Hosted NBCs SNF studio show for years and a couple of Olympics as well. Has a syndicated radio show daily. Did Sports Jeopardy on occasions.

i would guess it would include other contestants since it counts Ken; although Ken has been listed as a consultant of some sort before Trebek passed away. James Holzhauer seems to cocky to be a guest host on the show. I don't think there's too many contestants that are well known to casual viewers of the show other than Ken. I hope they extend the use of guest hosts beyond those just connected to Jeopardy. That would seem like a small pool of options. I would like to see some of the others that were suggested before like Levar Burton.

Well, since you mentioned the clue crew, Kelly Miyahara was the emcee for Sports Jeopardy! pulling double duty on both shows. She just had her second child days ago, so not sure if she'd be a guest host. She left the Jeopardy! family a couple of years ago after her first child.

When I hear the name "Dan Patrick" the first person that comes to mind is my state's mentally challenged lieutenant governor.

The rotating guest hosts is a good idea--keeps the show going while being respectful of Alex's passing and not replacing him right away. And it can serve as an auditioning process to test out some possibilities for the permanent gig.
