Rotating hosts allows for an audition process, and also doesn't give the impression of someone usurping Alex's memory. By the time they name a permanent host, people will generally welcome it.

I just don't understand that attitude. How is it respectful to Alex to not replace him, but to have a halfhearted replacement by installing someone new every week?

He did a great job and I'm going to miss him, but it's showbiz and the show must go on.

If you're married with young children and your wife dies on a Sunday, it would be a little weird to have the mortician pick up her corpse on Sunday and have the girlfriend/mistress move in on Monday. Best to wait a little while and date a bit first. It wouldn't feel right if they announced when they added Ken Jennings as a consultant that he would replace Alex Trebek once he dies. It's best to have a transitional period even if they always intended Jennings to replace him.

I wonder what type of a tribute Bob Barker will get once he's gone. He hosted TPIR nearly the same amount of time as Trebek served as host of Jeopardy. The difference is Barker decided to retire where Alex decided to stay on the show as long as he was physically able to. Also Bob Barker has been gone from the show for a long time and many tweens or those in their early twenties may not have even herd of Bob Barker.

Jeopardy! fans will have a little more time to prepare for the end of an era. As previously reported, late, legendary host Alex Trebek‘s final five episodes —originally slated to kick off Monday, Dec. 21 — will now get underway on Monday, Jan. 4, with his last episode set to air on Friday, Jan. 8.

My local CBS station - WIVB-Channel 4 - in Buffalo, NY - shows Jeopardy every week-night from 7:30 pm ET to 8:00 pm ET. Our local NFL team - the Buffalo Bills - made the playoffs this season and will most likely be playing their first playoff game either Jan 9 or Jan 10. WIVB-Channel 4 will definiately be doing a one hour playoff special to be shown on either Jan 7 or Jan 8. They usually show these starting at 7:00 pm ET - thus that nights episode of Jeopardy (and that nights episode of its tag partner - Wheel Of Fortune) moves to the sister station - WNLO TV-Channel 23. Hopefully they show the Bills special at another time and show Alex's second to last episode and his last episode on its regular station - WIVB-Channel 4.

I for one am up for if they bring in a rotating guest to host for a year. There will be plenty of feedback from the fans by then

Mrs Danger figured out the theme of the episodes chosen for this week: Alex goes on location and films the video clues.

When Gene Siskel died, they had many different critics join Roger Ebert for maybe a year before naming a permanent co-host. Supposedly they were looking for the right chemistry, but Siskel's replacement was Richard Roeper who Ebert already knew because they both worked at the Chicago Sun-Times.

I've always thought that Ebert knew he liked Roeper but didn't want to present a permanent replacement too quickly. Plus there's the PR value of claiming to be involved in a search.

I see the logic in Ken Jennings as host because he is a respected member of the Jeopardy family, but I don't know if that is a good idea for the long run.

Think about this. Alex Trebek wasn't the smartest guy on the stage. He knew all the answers because they were provided to him. Trebek's skill was being the host. Jennings would likely be smarter than most of the contestants. How will that play out in the long run? Could he betray condescension when they get things incorrect? When somebody blows Final Jeopardy, could it come off like he is mocking them?

Ultimately, I think it will serve the show's long tern interest better if they take some time and finish this production year with Jennings and/or other temp hosts, but come back in the fall with a new HOST.
By that, I mean, acknowledging that Trebek is gone and it has to be someone else's show from now on. And that person will have to be their own kind of host. Someone like Ken Jennings will always come off like he is keeping Trebek's seat warm, the same way Jay Leno initially acted like he was still guest-hosting for Johnny when he took over the Tonight Show.

Remember, both Bob Barker and Trebek already had many, many years of experience as hosts/presenters before settling in to their legendary stints of 30+ years

That's true. Trebek had almost 25 years of TV experience before Jeopardy.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Some drama unfolding on Twitter today, though only tangentially related to Jeopardy.

I guess Ken Jennings cohosts a podcast with a guy named John Roderick. Roderick posted a story on twitter about teaching his (Roderick's) 9yo daughter a lesson by making her figure out how to use a can opener on her own because she was hungry and wanted to open a can of beans. It's a really dumb story and the guy is trying to be funny but kind of comes across like an asshole. A lot of folks on twitter got outraged by it (probably overly so) and it's gone viral.

Jennings has posted a few tweets defending his buddy, saying it's just an exaggerated story and people are overreacting.

People searched through Roderick's tweet history and have come up with several tweets referring to Jews and using some racial slurs. Roderick and his defenders have claimed that those tweets are satire.

It appears as though Roderick has now deleted his twitter account, but there are screenshots of some of his old tweets.
There are many more.

Jennings is getting raked over the coals on Twitter right now.

Jennings had some backlash last week too on twitter after people found some old tweets that where just poor taste humor jokes.

This is like the Contrapoints video on cancel culture. It sounds like Ken Jennings is a villain because he touched someone who made a dozen bad taste tweets out of thousands over the last ten years.

Strangely, it didn't stir my emotions.

Aaand that's a huge lie. I had to watch it alone, so my wife didn't have to watch a grown man weep, again.

It's still surreal that he died shortly after that taping. He looked just fine. He sounded a little hoarse, again, but that was about it.

The show will never be the same.

RIP Alex

You could tell that Alex wasn’t well when he filmed these last few episodes. His voice was rough when he spoke. His Executive Producer said in his last days once the cameras cut, Alex was in pain, but he sucked it up.

I tossed on Jeopardy! on Netflix after having not watched it in a while and it started me with season 34 and I got to watch the wonderful run by Austin Rogers, that was really entertaining. I impressed my kids with how many I got right, too, and my oldest was floored that she knew It's a Wonderful Life for Final Jeopardy! in one of the episodes.

I'll catch some of Alex's last episodes later.

Not surprised. He comes across as a rather smarmy dullard. I recall during his first run he told a "hilarious" story about how when he and his family go see a movie they all shout out when the name of the movie is name dropped. I would tell them to shut the fuck up if they were say anywhere near me and my family.

Lets hope someone with actual charisma or a persoanlity gets the gig.

Jennings was pretty much what I expected him to be. The opening tribute was well done, but the game itself was a little bland. Given his history on the show, he's a great temporary host, but I don't see him developing into a permanent replacement.
