Re: The Craig Ferguson Appreciation Thread

Geoff has been brilliant this week at taking a word or phrase from Craig's monologue and turning it into a hilarious sponsor's promo:

"Coming up folks, how many times has this happened to you? You've ruined a perfectly good pair of lederhosen. Well why not try Der PoopenSphincter and avoid another blitzkrieg in your pants."

"Tonight's program is brought to you by: folks, do your jokes have that not-so-fresh feeling? Why not try Late Night Talk Show Douche?"

What was up with Jessica Lange last night? She looked like she was either high or drunk or both.

I know, I was getting flashbacks to the infamous Farrah Fawcett interview on Letterman. She just seemed uneasy and distracted. I enjoyed watching it though. Loved when Ferguson asked if her tattoo was a full moon or crescent.

It was nice to see Jason Schwartzman hang around. What other guests have stayed?

Last week too. You missed Alfred Molina, Dominic Monaghan, Tom Lennon, Larry King, and Louie Anderson. Monday night was Lauren Graham.

Re: The Craig Ferguson Appreciation Thread

I hate Paula Poundstone. Always have, but even moreso after she was charged (although the nature of the charges were apparently overstated at the time).

I really liked Lauren Graham doing Geoff's voice. It was obvious that she watches the show, and has manned puppets in the past with Craig. AI kinda like the replacement Geoff idea, and how they use it more often (although I know it is just because the regular Geoff was going to be gone for a couple of weeks).

BTW, loved the Poppy Montgomery interview from a few nights ago.

i know not everyone likes Robin Williams but it seems like Craig is one of the few talk show hosts that can keep up with Robin and even make him laugh

Re: The Craig Ferguson Appreciation Thread

I typically hate Robin Williams on talk shows, but this was actually tolerable. I can't say it was all Craig, but I think RW is also slowing down in age and he's probably calm from getting married.

Re: The Craig Ferguson Appreciation Thread

My opinion, I don't think it has anything to do with Robin calming with age; it's more Craig not letting Robin takeover his show. By at least attempting to keep up with him it keeps Robin on his toes and he can't JUST do his usual schtick.

You could see some of Robin's pre-planned bits in his appearance, but Craig keeps it fresh enough that some things come out organically. It makes it funnier when they are both going at it. I mentioned it the last time Robin was on, but his appearances on Ferguson are the funniest I've found him in years.

Tonight was the long awaited Wilford Brimley interview. I don't think he knew why he was there.

me either but it was still a good interview. Craig really seems to have the gift of making any interview entertaining.

I was disappointed that Geoff didn't interact in the Brimley interview, but ole Wilford probably wouldn't have known what the hell was going on.

Re: The Craig Ferguson Appreciation Thread

I thought the Brimley interview was going to be either awkward or dull but it was actually a lot of fun. He came off as quite likable and even got some good laughs.

I'm glad they didn't have Geoff cracking diabetes jokes or do Secretariat, things probably would have gotten awkward if they got too weird on him.

I'm kinda surprised they didn't have Kristin Bell as a substitute voice for Geoff. I really liked the Lauren Graham interview they replayed late last week as well.

The Michael Connelly interview was TERRIBLE, and I am a big fan of Ferguson & Connelly. Just painful. Connelly isn't a great interview, but last night was one of the worst interviews I've seen in a while.

Re: The Craig Ferguson Appreciation Thread

I'm loving the bit where Geoff becomes Craig's inner monologue.

"Boy I really bombed on that one. I'll make up for it though, I'm gonna show my penis right now... No, no I better not... [train whistle] What the hell was that? Keep it together, keep it together!"

Meanwhile Craig is trying his hardest not to laugh.

I also like how Geoff is always lashing out at lesbian row ("what are you laughing at lesbians?").

Re: The Craig Ferguson Appreciation Thread

If anyone's interested, Grant Imahara did a Q&A on Reddit recently and gave a pretty lengthy answer to a question about Geoff.

Spoiler:

Q: Why was Geoff constructed with only one movable arm, a rotating neck and moving jaw? Was that resource issue, or a comic decision?

A: Geoff Peterson is a plastic anatomic skeleton with a moving jaw, a rotating head, a metal mohawk and one arm that moves up and down. Originally, the idea was to have this character that would interact with Craig. It would work on remote control, where you push a button and it answers automatically. And from my perspective, having worked on a lot of different puppets (R2-D2, the Energizer Bunny, etc.) from movies or TV is that it requires a fairly skilled puppeteer to pull off more than one or two moves. For example to drive R2-D2 only requires one operator under most circumstances. I know there are people out there who are R2-D2 builder enthusiasts and they want to build everything into their R2. They spend a lot of time trying to cram fire extinguisher, light saber launcher and all those different things into this one little shell. But the truth with the movies is that we swap out different robots or devices as the situation requires. So when you're actually driving R2 for public appearance, you only need one person to control it. In contast, the Energizer Bunny requires three people to operate. One person works the head, a second person runs the arms and the third person is the driver. Particularly with driving, controlling a robot really requires concentration, especially when you have people around you or when you're driving close to an edge, such as with the Energizer Bunny driving on a countertop. As far as Geoff Peterson goes, the jaw is the thing that you as the operator have to concentrate on the most. And turning/moving the head and moving the arm, that's just icing on the cake. But your main job is flapping the jaw. With two arms, it becomes this whole thing where you gave to figure out what to do with the other arm. And then people ask why can't you make him drive away from the podium. I like to say that's for the protection of humanity. To make sure that I don't accidentaly create skynet. But really it's mostly about puppeteer and the ability to control Geoff in a meaningful way. Secondly, it worked out because it's actually a fairly small skeleton, but there is enough space to fit the servo for one shoulder and the neck in that chest cavity with direct drive, so you don't have to do any fancy gearing, belts or chains. So it all worked out in the end. The servos that you'd have to use to move this full sized human skeleton around are fairly beefy. They are Tonegawa SSPS-105s, in fact. The Cadillac of large scale servos. That's what Geoff uses. They are big and they have to fit inside of his little chest coat area so that he looks reasonably human scale, and not like this sort of hunched over giant hulky robot skeleton sidekick.

Thought I'd give this a bump...

Craig is in Scotland this week for another round of pre-filmed shows. No Kristen Bell, but Craig favorites Mila Kunis, Rashida Jones, Ariel Tweto, David Sedaris, and MCD are along for the ride.

Too bad Shirley Manson must have been busy getting ready to tour when they filmed this. Otherwise, she would have been a perfect guest. Well, she's always a perfect guest.
