The Wire *Season Finale* - "Final Grades" - 12/10/06

"Final Grades"
Spoiler:
In the Season Four finale, the bodies from the vacants pile up while Burrell offers his support to Daniels and admonishes Rawls for crossing him. A distraught Bubbles finds himself at his wits' end after his revenge plan backfires. Proposition Joe looks to the Co-Op to defray shipment losses, but finds them not so cooperative. Attempting to get Namond off the corners, Colvin visits Cutty in the hospital to arrange a prison sit-down with Wee-Bey about the boy's future. Omar divides the spoils from his latest heist, then hatches an audacious new plan. Carcetti responds to the governor's school-budget offer; Carver tries to buy time for Randy; Dukie has trouble adjusting to his new peers; Marlo gives Michael new responsibilities on an old corner; Colvin and Parenti take their proposal to City Hall; Namond returns to gen pop; and McNulty looks to pay back an old debt he owes Bodie.

My thoughts

Fantastic finale.

I knew not all of the ending would be happy, but 3 of them end up in bad shape.

Michael is under the wing of Chris and running a corner, looks like Dukie is working for him, and Randy is back in a foster home getting the shit kicked out of him thanks to Herc.

Namond must have a golden horseshoe up his ass. The one who had everything to start with is the only one that pulls through.

Bodie

I never thought the political stuff was that interesting but the best part of it was tonight with Norman and Royce's chief of staff in the bar watching Carcetti on the news and him telling Norman how they always disappoint you.

I was kind of surprised they wrote McNulty back into major crimes. With him rejoining Major Crimes that would certainly hint that he would be back for the last season. I can’t really say I missed the character. The other characters are so well developed that the show doesn’t lag, I’m a huge Lester fan so giving him more time was great.

Liked the montage at the end, the scene with Carver going back to the spot in the season premiere where we met the four of them and breaking up the next group of kids shows the cycle will just repeat itself.

I agree that the finale was phenominal.

While he had the most to start, Namond also could have lost the most, so I see it as somewhat okay that he ends up in a good place.

As much as I like Herc as a character, he really deserves whatever demotion he has coming.

This was somewhat known before the season, iirc.
Spoiler:
West was given time off and a reduced role with the understanding that he would play a major part in the final season, which allegedly will revolve around the media.

At any rate, fantastic season. The Wire remains the best show on television.

Great finale. I'd rank this as the second best season overall, behind only the first. Hopefully we'll see some more of the kids next year and find out more about what happens to them. I'm really hoping for an emmy nod for best drama this time around. It is criminal that this show has never been nominated, let alone won.

I was sorry to see Bodie go, but that's the life he's in. Even though I liked him he still "had it coming" for killing Wallace in season one.

Not that season really "missed him" in terms of quality, but I hope McNulty is more involved again next year.

Feel bad for bodie, he saw it coming, mcnulty was an idiot to meet him at central booking.

Loved Omar going back to Prop Joe 20c on the dollar, and also his clock was repaired.

Interesting montage at the end with Marlo checking out the Greek.

Not very smart of Marlo checking out Vondas, this might get him what he has coming, we can hope. I love this show and HATE that it is over already and we only have 1 season left - this is a major crime. This is by far my favorite drama, and I am glad that HBO has stuck with it for the 4/5 seasons.

Couldn't Carver just take Randy home, hell it is not like DSS would know he was missing. Poor Bubbles, how bad would Greggs feel if she knew she was the reason he went back the last time he was clean.

Is that Carmelo Anthony?

Shouldn't he be flashing gang signs and warning against snitches?

Wow I'm going to have to rewatch this episode. there is still so much I have missed.

I'd love to talk to the actor who plays "snoop" in real life. I wonder how she really sounds.

imdb has a 30 minute documentary "The Wire: It's All Connected". anyone know what this is?

Poor Bubbles. He's probably my favorite character, and seeing Steve Earle showing up again trying to help him out was great.

Here's an amazing interview with David Simon. One thing it touches on is what the sixth season would have been if he chose to do it (they're not going to).

I've read The Corner. It gets a bit preachy too many times, and often goes off on what doesn't work without proposing any alternatives. The people and stories are very interesting though. It is a very good read, but it could stand to be edited down a little.
