No, I believe this Sunday's broadcast is 8 of 13. At some point in the near future a light comes on, so to speak, and things start to pickup the pace substantially.

I just watched the finale and agree things really pick up over the last 2 episodes once events take place at the end of episode 11.

The Wire - "Corner Boys" - 11/05/06

"Corner Boys"
Spoiler:
To monitor the pulse on the street, Carcetti makes the rounds with members of the force. With Marimow on his case, Herc resorts to strong-arm tactics to retrieve his pinched camera, but Marlo isn't impressed. While Proposition Joe shows off his vocal range, Chris shows Snoop how to expose, and dispose of, New York infiltrators. At school, Prez struggles to fit a test-practice mandate into his curriculum, and Colvin figures out a way to involve Namond and other "corner boys" in problem solving. Not buying into Old Face Andre's account of a homicide, Bunk tries to convert Holley and Crutchfield to his way of thinking. A newly sober McNulty attends an Irish cop wake--with a not-so-sober Bunk. Daniels gains the mayor's confidence, while Rawls confirms Burrell's suspicions of collusion. Randy finds himself on a short leash; Dukie learns that computer skills breed popularity; and Michael is dismayed by the unexpected return of a missing family member.

My thoughts
Another good episode

Irish wake McNulty got his 20 secs of screentime and drunk Bunk brings the funny.

Namond’s mom going and yelling at Bodie

Looks like Michael was abused by his mom’s boyfriend

Daniels new job is the commander of C.I.D., that was Rawls job back in season 1.

What show was Michael's dad on before as a creepy, abusive father? It was either a cop or law show (narrows it down, I know...). It was bugging me throughout the episode.

the entire season is also available from review screeners sent out earlier this year. i've watched the wire both weekly and via the DVD sets and waiting a week between episodes is so hard. the wire is a show completely suited for dvd.

I'm finally starting to catch up now, this is far and away the best show out there, the cast is perfect in every role. from Omar to Marlo to the kids they cast this season.
Not a fan of Snoop, but she's pretty menacing, I do like Chris, he seems totally in charge of his shit. 4 more eps and I'm caught up, that will be this weekends viewing..

Hey, I'm relatively new to the series, can somebody explain the "Fuzzy Dunlap" reference to me? Which is to say, is it supposed to make sense, as a callback to something, or is it just Hauk giving the guy bullshit?

All the names of informants are made up. Basically street names.

Still wish this had been HD, but it is a great season.

Love how the mayor-elect tells them to do what they normally do, and the guy whips out his porn mag.

Fuzzy Dunlop is the name they gave to the fake CI created to provide a source for the information from the wiretap Herc and Carv put in the tennis ball. (dunlop is a brand of tennis balls) This was from season 2 or season 3.

I guess IT would not surprise you then that Snoop in real life has spent time in jail. she talked about it on one of the docs. on HBO before the season started.

Damn you guys for making me find the answer on my own...

The guy who plays Michael's dad was on NYPD Blue as a no-good father (to a boy named Michael actually). Baldwin took the boy in when the dad was sent to prison for killing Michael's mother.

I had to look this up too since I recognized him and couldn't place him. He's also appeared on at least half the episodes of Oz as Officer Adrian Johnson. Yet another Oz castaway on The Wire (that's 2 new ones this season). Does anybody have a list of actors who've appeared in both shows?

The Wire - "Know Your Place" - 11/12/06

"Know Your Place"
Spoiler:
Poot returns to the corner after a stint in prison--and is welcomed back by Herc and Dozerman. Carcetti engages in a testy budget battle with City Council President Campbell, rewards Daniels with a promotion, and hits a snag in his efforts to relieve Burrell of his duties. Bubbles fingers a witness for Herc, but the detective is slow to return the favor. While Prez is frustrated by the imposition of training for statewide tests in his curriculum, Colvin motivates his class by offering a dinner incentive to his student groups. Randy puts the math skills he's learned in class to work on the street; his success allows him to get Prez to bankroll his candy business. While Michael turns to Marlo for help with a problem, Old Face Andre turns to Proposition Joe for protection against Marlo.

My thoughts
]Great ep

Poot

Herc is such a dumbfuck. Bubbles gets a beatdown and he makes Randy a target in a span of 10 minutes.

They have school administrators down perfectly. When I was student teaching we got the same speech and spent a week teaching test questions.

Herc is a major league fuckwad. He's fucking everything up, the difference between him and carver is incredible. Carver has really stepped it up..

The dinner with Bunny and Naymond was interesting for sure, the kids did not know how to handle it. It's quite the season, I've finally caught up to real time, and am resisting watching the remaining episodes. Prez is getting disillusioned with the school system, similar to how cutty didn't like the school bringing back truants for 1 day in Sept and 1 in Oct.

Brilliant show, I love it. just ordered s1 on dvd.

So I imagine that Randy is in serious f'ing trouble now that Herc more or less ID'd him as the witness. Agreed about the show, so clever and sadly true to life.

He's pretty much the only "good guy" on in the entire series that has remained pretty much unchanged since the series started. He was an idiot then and he is still an idiot.

This episode was good, but it got me all depressed, especially combined with next week's preview. I knew after Daniels and his girlfriend had that "I think things are finally turning around in Baltimore" conversation, that things were going to start going bad. Damn.

That's what seperates this show from all others. Everything coming up roses in an enviornment like we are seeing would be a total cop out and completely unrealsitic.

I'll spoiler this, but it's just an observation about the eps that haven't aired yet more then anything specific
Spoiler:
If you thought this was depressing, you'll need prozac after the season finale

Anyone able to give me a season overview in a sentence or two?

I've watched S1 thru 3 (thru methods best left undescribed) but I haven't bothered yet with S4.... I've read the threads, but they don't seem too excited...

Season 1 was about getting the Barksdale crew.
Season 2 was about getting the Dockworker gang.
Season 3 was about, um? The "Amsterdam experiement", and politics and corruption, and how hard it is to get anything real done in the "drug wars"....

I know the acting and writing quality is good. But I felt S3 was completely amorphous, not really *about* anything, the way S1 and S2 focused on particular cases...

I take it that trend has continued, and McNulty has been pushed even further into the background... Correct?

The focus this season is on the Baltimore schools. We spend a lot time with the 4 boys and their lives.

The cops are pretty much a secondary story for the most part.
