Shane Gillis has been set as the host of the Feb. 24 episode of “Saturday Night Live” — a controversial move, as the comedian was cast and swiftly cut from the late-night sketch show in 2019. He will be joined by musical guest 21 Savage.
Hours after Gillis was announced to be joining “SNL” in 2019, videos resurfaced on social media that featured him making racist, homophobic, Islamophobic and misogynistic jokes on his own podcast and other media.
One week later, NBC cut him from the cast. “After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining ‘SNL,’” a spokesperson said at the time on behalf of executive producer Lorne Michaels. “We want ‘SNL’ to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as comedian and his impressive audition for ‘SNL.’ We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard.”
Gillis also released a statement, saying, “It feels ridiculous for comedians to be making serious public statements but here we are. I’m a comedian who was funny enough to get ‘SNL.’ That can’t be taken away. Of course I wanted an opportunity to prove myself at ‘SNL,’ but I understand it would be too much of a distraction. I respect the decision they made. I’m honestly grateful for the opportunity. I was always a mad tv [sic] guy anyway.”
Among Gillis’ resurfaced comments were uses of anti-Asian, homophobic and ableist slurs.

Shane Gillis is the comedian that was hired to be a new cast member a couple years ago, and then unhired after a few days when some past tweets came to light.
21 Savage is a rapper who I have never heard of before.
Funny that no one has posted a comment about the show in progress, and Goldberg is already on to the next one. Was tonight's show just a 90 minute shrug?

I turned it off after the elevator short.
Sarah Sherman on WU was the highlight. The Instagram comment game show was ok, but they've done it before.
Edebiri seemed nervous and flubbed a few of her lines.

Shane Gillis is very funny, become very popular lately, and has the built in story of having been fired from the show.
Really looking forward to tonight’s show as I like Ayo Edebiri but haven’t started it yet.

Agreed that Sarah Sherman on WU was the highlight. I also like the Instagram Comment sketch and the Drugs on Campus one.
The Dune Popcorn Bucket took me by surprise. I had never seen that before and who cleared that for production?

While not a great outing, a vast improvement over last week. Edebiri was game and gave it all in every sketch. Never seen her before (didn't watch The Bear), but I'm a fan now. While a bit underwritten, the Campus Drugs sketch was good, biggest laugh was Campus Security giving Dismukes a fist bump when the squares narced on him. And while I can't stand Jennifer Lopez or her music, she performed the hell out of that first song. A lot of playback, a lot of reliance on other singers, but it was a lively and entertaining performance even though I hated the song.
But seriously, two game show sketches? C'mon, SNL.

Wow that first sketch with Nikki Hayley was toothless, unfunny shit. Ayo gave it her all as did JLo. Would love to hear the behind the scenes story of when the Ayo podcast clip of her dissing JLo was discovered.

Shane Gillis was on Bupkis the Pete Davidson show and on the Dana Carvey and David Spade podcast so I guess people forgave him or thought he got screwed when he was fired from SNL.
I liked the elevator sketch but the Dakota Johnson show was better.
Sucks they dont show the old classic SNL shows and just repeat the show from the prior week now.
Marcello Hernandez seems like the standout guy and maybe futures star.
Not Bi but I think he should get plenty of tail too since he has the looks to get some hot dates.

Two things:
I can't believe Lopez is in her 50s and looks like that.
I can't decide whether they have adopted the practice of making Jost read some of the cue cards cold,
or is he just that good an actor at seeming like he is hearing/saying it for the first time.

OK episode.
Ayo was great.
I don't like any aspect of Lopez, but she looks incredible for a 54 year old. Hell, 44 year olds probably got nothing on her either.
Always love when Sarah Sherman's on WU. She needs to be used more - she's my favorite member of the cast.

At least Edebiri put some energy into her performance, playing quite different characters throughout the show.
Sure that's an option, but I liked the random reruns from various eras of the show at the 10PM hour. You never knew which one they were going to pull out, and why. If you have all the episodes at your personal disposal, you'll settle on favorites; I like them selecting ones that maybe I wouldn't consider if I were doing the picking and choosing.

I had no problem with 2 game show sketches - they were pretty good IMO.
J-Lo looked great - as usual.
I know opinions are subjective, but how the hell was that horrendous Dakota Johnson outing better than this weeks? They came out of the gate with....a waitress who forgets a table's orders. Hilarity. And don't get me started on that book club/Shark Tank debacle.

I guess JLo gets a pass just because she looks good but that music...eesh!
I actually enjoyed her first 2 albums. She's never been known for her voice but she has put out some decent dance music (probably stuff Britney and Katy Perry passed on). If those 2 songs are the best of what she has to offer just dump it in the discount bin now. I am amazed SNL would even bother to put her on. I'd say hopefully the failure of this will push her back to her movie career but that's been a crap fest as well. She should know when to pull the plug and just retire and invest her money but I'm sure her ego doesn't want to deprive us of her 'talent'.
