Re: Vinegar Syndrome 'Half Way to Black Friday' 50% Sale

Replying to myself here, but I found Shanghai Triad is on Kanopy so I watched it today. Very good film, but probably not one I need to own.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome 'Half Way to Black Friday' 50% Sale

Prospect was her big screen debut back in 2018, for what it's worth.

Re: Vinegar Syndrome 'Half Way to Black Friday' 50% Sale

I'm considering a couple of blind buy titles in the current sale: Shanghai Triad and Two Faces of Tai Kato. Anyone recommend those?

A few 50% off titles I already have that I would recommend to...

Re: Last BD or 4K UHD disc you watched?

Just finished up 3 Slient Classics by Josef von Sternberg (https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/744-3-silent-classics-by-josef-von-sternberg) (technically 3 BDs). Very good blind buy for me. Underworld...

Re: The Odyssey (2026, D: Nolan)

I don’t think Tenet is among Nolan’s best films, but I liked it too - especially after watching it a second time when I had a slightly better sense of the concepts.

Re: The Odyssey (2026, D: Nolan)

Movies are creative expression, even when they are adaptations of other works. What I bolded above would be like seeing this painting and saying, "Picasso should have made Jacqueline Kneeling less...

Re: The Odyssey (2026, D: Nolan)

Helen of Troy is a mythological character purported to be the most beautiful woman in her mythological world. I have no issue with a director making an artistic statement about beauty by casting...

Re: The Odyssey (2026, D: Nolan)

Troy (at least the theatrical cut) is an objectively bad movie. I saw it in the theater when it came out and thought it was laughably bad. Movie critics (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/troy) seemed...

Re: What movie just doesn't click for you, even though it should?

Here are a couple that come to mind for me:

A Clockwork Orange - I love Kubrick, I love dark movies with dystopian settings, I love synth-based soundtracks, but I've seen this several times and...

Re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I’ve never seen Full Contact, but I’ve read good things. Any of the resident HK action fans recommend owning that one?

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

No she wouldn't. She was a signficantly worse actor than everyone else in The Mandalorian to the point that I found it distracting at times, before she ever did anything questionable off screen.

Re: The VINYL Thread!

The only thing tempting me is the Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve LP, but I don't think I care enough to stand in line. I might go middle of the day to see if there are any left.

Re: UHD release announcements

I'm not that big of a Spielberg fan, but there's no denying his skill as a filmmaker. War of the Worlds seems like an outlier in that set though. It is at least a tier below the other movies IMO.

Re: For All Mankind (Apple TV+) -- S: Joel Kinnaman -- NASA series from the creator of Battlestar Galacti

I was lukewarm on the last season and it's been 2 years so I think I've lost interest. Unless reviews are overwhelmingly positive for this season, I'll probably move my attention to other things.

Re: Alien: Earth - from Noah Hawley, Ridley Scott as EP

My quick take:

Alien - A masterpiece, one of my personal favorite movies and one of the best movies of all time IMO
Aliens - A brilliant sequel that amped up the action angle and stands on its...

Re: The Killer (1989, D: John Woo) -- S: Chow Yun Fat, Danny Lee -- 4K re-release back in theaters

I got to see this on the big screen last Fall at my local art house theater and it was epic. Probably my personal favorite John Woo film. It's so melodramatic which plays perfectly with the over the...

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

This is the first time Marlowe has been on Blu-ray isn't it? That's one of the Bruce Lee screen appearances I don't yet have on disc, so I might have to pick it up.
