The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

No surprise here, Disney is going to milk the Star Wars brand name for as many years as possible.
Disney chief Bob Iger said he just met with LucasFilm head Kathleen Kennedy to map out “Star Wars” movies from 2021 and beyond, signalling that the studio is plunging ahead with plans to keep developing the cinematic universe created by George Lucas.
To that end, the studio has already announced two more planned sequels to its series of films centered on the Skywalker clan, as well as spinoffs about a plot to steal plans for the Death Star and a Han Solo origin story. They have also found a writer for another spinoff, expected to debut in 2020. Those films will hit theaters over the next four years, but Iger signaled to investors at a Goldman Sachs conference on Wednesday that Disney is looking beyond that date for ways to exploit the Jedi Knights and space adventurers that populate the fantasy film series. Similar meetings are taking place at Marvel Films, the maker of hugely successful comic book movies, about what the studio will be doing for the next decade, Iger said.
The Disney chief said he had recently seen a rough cut of “Star Wars: Rogue One,” the first standalone film in the series. “It’s really interesting in terms of ‘Star Wars’ storytelling,” he said. “‘Star Wars’ has only been told as a saga, and this is a moment in time … we love what we’ve seen.”
Iger stressed that “Rogue One,” which unfolds before the first “Star Wars,” is not expected to match the box office returns of “The Force Awakens.” That picture racked up nearly $2.1 billion globally to become the third-highest grossing film in history. “We never felt it would do the level that ‘Force Awakens’ did,” Iger said. But based on the response to the trailers and posters, he said “The level of interest [in ‘Rogue One’] is as high as it was for ‘Force Awakens.'”

My only issue is that it took them this long to get this going. I'm 42 years old, sure I've got a good amount of time left in me, but all so many of us ever wanted was more adventures with Mark, Harrison and Carrie while they were in their prime.
And we absolutely need a Spielberg Star Wars movie.

I wonder how much those plans are attached to how well Rogue One does.

I'm sure it will factor in, but Disney also needs to be aware that this is a major departure for Star Wars films - not about the Skywalkers or Jedi, and it's another prequel.
I'd say it would have to bomb horrifically for them to pull back on the other plans, as long as it does "pretty good" they'll keep moving forward.

I guess they'll want to keep an eye on toy sales, too. No doubt, it'll do well. Hopefully, it'll generate excitement for more movies. I'd love to see Spielberg take a crack at one.

For the most part Disney has handled both Star Wars and Marvel decently.

I'm starting to get Marvel fatigue but I was never a comic reader anyway. I grew up with Star Wars and would be happy to see a movie every year.

Spielberg hasn't done much in his last few attempts. I get the love for his earlier work, but it feels like he's lost his way a bit.

Han Solo Trilogy most likely.
Obi-Wan Trilogy had been rumored.
Ridley and Hamill could do Episode X.
I don't think Rogue One will get a sequel. We'll see.

I wonder if they'll let Joss Whedon do a Star Wars movie. He's done with Marvel?
Would be cool if Episode X was the start of the war with the Yuuzhan Vong.

If he has a good or great script, he almost can't miss. He has several good to arguably great films this past decade or so. I really don't blame him for Indy 4. The script was crap, but it's not as horrible as people make it out to be. If Shia Labeouf hadn't been cast, I don't think the movie would be disliked as much by fans of the series. Also, he's not making mega blockbuster movie much anymore, but I have no doubt he can. Minority Report is one of the best movies in the last 15 yeas, but it's also exciting and has great action pieces (though restrained).

I only consider it milking the Star Wars name if they're just being churned out with no consideration for quality. As long as they are done well, I'm all for many quality films that take place in the Star Wars universe, though I admit I'm not particularly excited about the Young Han Solo movie that is planned.

bring it the fuck on. can't get enough of "adult" oriented Star Wars done (reasonably) right.

obviously they are going to bleed this thing dry. I'm sure a prequel trilogy to the prequel trilogy will happen. As well as a sequel trilogy to the sequel trilogy.

So it'll be run into the ground at least as much as Transfomers has- lovely. (Though none of those were any good to begin with.)
Can they at least make a feature-movie version of the Holiday Special?

Star Wars meets Marvel meets Pixar meets Disney in one giant intergalactic movie.

I'm not a very big Star Wars fan, but look forward to this as long as they're entertaining. Plenty of stories to tell in that universe.
