The vocal style he uses on "Only" reminds me of "Once in a Lifetime" by the Talking Heads.

I was thinking more of NIN's "Down In It". All it is is semi-spoken word/singing, there are a lot of songs like that, heh.

I'm having a bitch of a time ripping this album to put on my iRiver so I can take it to work with me...I bought the dualdisc - has anyone that bought just the regular version tried ripping this yet?

I have a silly question regarding the Dualdisc version. I bought the regular version today at Best Buy, but haven't taken the shrinkwrap off yet (been watching the Star Wars Music DVD), but I was wondering about taking it back and upgrading. Now, the video and even the 5.1 don't interest me *that* much, but I noticed the Dual version had a "interactive discography". Now my wild imagination is thinking wacky graphics and sounds, like the computer thing Tom Cruise uses in Minority Report, but I'm sure it's much, much less. I do enjoy cataloging things, so is it any use at all?

Well, I can't say I'm overly impressed with this disc. I like it, but it can't come close to touching Downward Spiral.

I had no problems ripping the dual disc. Some drives and players don't like dual discs though, so try another computer if you can and through the files on a jump drive or something to get on your computer and to your iRiver.


I'm really digging the album. Can't really rank it yet, but I definitely like it more than The Fragile.

Ripping the single disc right now with no problem. I'm using dBpowerAMP Music Converter w/LAME.

The discocraphy basically is just a listing of all the different NIN releases (albums, singles, etc). The cool thing is that for each album there are usually 1 or 2 songs available to listen to. It's not really that much more than that.

The album in 5.1 is excellent btw.


Also, for those that would like the lyric sheet printed out but don't want to pay $100 at kinkos, there's a guy at message boards of 'echoing the sound' that is taking a massive order for a print shop to print up the posters for anyone who wants one. If he gets 500 orders than each poster comes out to like $22 after shipping.

that's a lot for something that was meant to be "free". I can't say I care that much, since I wasn't too concerned about a lyric book anyway.

I must be the only person who ranks The Fragile as the best album...

Yeah, I definitely think this should have come with the freakin album. That or have a mail away option in the booklet to buy the poster for just a couple bucks.

I'm probably gonna go ahead and buy it though, just b/c the poster will look cool on the wall.

i also like the fragile more than the other releases. i am really enjoying with_teeth however.

also, the vocals on only remind me of a lot of adrian belew's solo stuff...

Wow. I don't have any other NIN stuff, so I cannot compare this to past releases, but this is amazing. I love this freaking cd.

no...consider me the other. i don't know how anyone could consider that record as wandering or bloated. i see it as his masterpiece so far.

but i love With Teeth the more and more i listen.

I rank the albums like this.........

1: The Fragile - Yes, it's long and yes, some of it is just noise in the form of music. Still, the album is an experience. How many albums are like that? You have to sit down and devote yourself to it. Take it in.

2: With Teeth - Straight out rock. It's not to complicated (music wise). Yet it still delivers the message and mood that NiN has always had. It is Pretty Hate Machine meets Broken. Take the two, mash them together and you come up with Trent's newest album..

3: The Downward Spiral - This is the one most people think of when they think NiN. I love it, but I have to be in a certain mode to listen to it, otherwise it just seems to desperate. A great album.

4: Broken - Straight out metal, really. Short and to the point. I wouldn't mind a whole album like this.

5: Pretty Hate Machine - Started it all and is still a great album. Still, one can't help but feel some of the songs are dated, like "Kinda I want to". No one would of guessed back in '89 that this album could launch the career of one of rock's most brilliant artist.

6: And All That Could Have Been - I didn't care for the live album. You just can't sit back and listen to NiN live. You have to be there. On the flipside, 'Still' was a great companion disc for it.

I more than agree with your view on The Fragile and right now I'm having a hard time determining which is my all time fav - With Teeth is just so damn good and It keeps growing on me.

Has anyone else had trouble playing the DVD-Audio disc? My player has played all the rest just fine, but for some reason the only thing that plays on this one is the Video. Both the SACD and Dual Disc release of TDS play perfectly fine. Everything is correct connection and hardware wise, I've got many other DVDA and SACDs that work fine, but this won't play. It's really frustrating me.

I like the new album, and the concept of the online lyrics/etc. I don't, however, like digipaks. They don't stay shut when laying on the counter, and flop open when not pressed between two other cd's.

The concerts were awesome as well.

I also thought The Fragile was amazing. I could've done without so many instrumentals, but all the tracks with vocals were very good, and I enjoyed them immensely. As for With Teeth, I didn't really care for it that much the first few listens (when I found it on the net pre-release), but when I actually picked up the DualDisc and put it on in the car, it's been there ever since. I'm digging all of the tracks with the exception of "With Teeth." I just can't get over that chorus.

The Dual disc works fine for me (haven't tried the video yet though) both in CD players and the 5.1 mix in my DVD player

Anyway, having listened more and listend some to their other albums I'd rank as follows:

With Teeth- Pretty much a straight up hard rock album, and I like that. Every song is great.

Broken- Straight up metal, like the other poster I'd love a full album of this style.

Downward Spiral- Tons of great songs, but also several I don't like as well as others

Pretty Hate Machine- Some great songs, but lacks the impact of the above album on many tracks

The Fragile- too long, too many instrumentals, too electronic, etc. Just not my cup of tea. Would have been better suited as a single album, with a second disc later with some of the other tracks and some remixes ala Further Down the Spiral IMO.

I may as well add my comments on The dual disc as well:

It Works fine for me as well and the video in surround (and of course the songs) is super clear and very very loud

I can see this 5.1 thing catching on because of how much better it sounds. I would like to see more "addtional content" in future releases though.

I hope so, but i'm also hoping for two things:

1. They cut out this "dual" shit and release 'em as separate discs.
2. Do it for artists/albums that deserve it. C'mon...Usher?...Jessica Simpson?

3. make sure to release it as 5.1, and no damn [sounds the same as cd audio]Enhanced Stereo.
