Yoda says in ESB that through the Force we can see old friends, long gone. It’s not like Skyping them, but you’d feel echos of them in your dreams and meditations.

Seriously, of all the issues with the Star Wars films, this is like absolutely near the bottom for me. I can’t understand why so many people get hung up on it.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

the Leia line bothered me, but more so because it could've been so easily addressed with Padme laying her hand on Leia's newborn head for a few seconds, a little lingering camera shot between the two of them.... then something happens and she's not able to do the same with Luke.

still a bit of s stretch, but would be an easier pill to swallow, and so dumb and sloppy they didn't do something like that.

Lol... what in the actual fuck? Literal Nazis in our government? Hyperbole much?

So a TV show cannot take a chance because we have Nazis in our government. Ok.

I think people would be a lot more forgiving for those lines of dialogue in the OT if Lucas hadn’t come out with his “I planned it all along!” Nonsense.

It’s obvious that Leia’s line implied she was a young girl when her mother died. As a fan, you can retrofit it any way you want with “well, technically, a newborn that JUST came out of her mother is ‘very young’” but we all know that’s not what Lucas intended in A New Hope.

It’s hammering a square peg into a round hole with brute force and saying “It fits!”

Settle down, milo. If I didn't bring it up in my reply about Disney not respecting internal consistency, then someone else probably would have.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

The thing is, any long-running series is going to start having problems with continuity, and keeping everything 100% consistent, and often it's better to break with 100% continuity if it helps the story. And for good movies/stories, most people just forgive it, especially if it's relatively minor. The only time most people actually nitpick such stuff is when they're otherwise unhappy with the film, and want to point to something factual and objective to justify their emotional response.

So people are likely really upset with Padme's death because it seems so pat and rote and lazy and dumb. Like, even if Eps 4-6 hadn't existed, and Lucas had started with Eps 1-3, her death would've still been underwhelming and nonsensical and emotionally unfulfilling. You mean, this main character we've spent 3 movies with just... dies? Not even from injuries Anakin inflicted on her, but a broken heart? It's bullshit even without any continuity contradictions. But that's harder to articulate and argue, so it's much easier to point to the continuity error to complain about her death.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

Her death is both terribly perfunctory and also opens up a continuity error. It's an interconnected problem.

I think that a lot of it comes down to Lucas not really having the prequel trilogy planned out in advance, and, by the time he got the third film, there too many things he needed to do that he didn't set up in advance in the first two.

So in the third movie he has to end the Clone Wars (which only just began in the final minute of the second movie), show Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, have the twins be born, deal with Padme, have the big volcano lightsaber battle between Ben and Anakin, and also deal with the Force ghost issue.

The thing about Luke and Leia is that if Vader knew they existed, he'd be hunting for them non-stop. So either the pregnancy had to be hidden or unknown to Anakin and the twins born in secret, or Padme had to die before giving birth. By withholding the meat of the story of the prequels until the final film, Lucas painted himself into a corner and had to kill off Padme.

I can't help but think that Lucas should have ditched The Phantom Menace, made Attack of the Clones the first prequel, then told the story of Revenge of the Sith over episodes two and three.

Yes, they're interconnected, but the continuity error would be barely a blip of concern for anyone but the most hardcore, logic driven fans if it wasn't for it just being a bad death in general.

Like, Vader being changed to Luke's dad introduced far more continuity issues, as did making Leia and Luke siblings, but those mostly get accepted with a handwave because overall those films were good (with ESB arguably the best Star Wars).

I'm still of the mind that the only reason The Phantom Menace exists is because George Lucas wanted to show young Anakin leaving his mother, the root of his issues, but was still militantly hanging onto the "rule" that a Star Wars film couldn't contain any flashbacks.

Every time I come to this thread I hope for real news about SW movies, lol. It's turned into the same thread from The Last Jedi.

This is just incorrect. The EU was doing a whole bunch of stupid shit with the Force decades before Disney acquired the property. Even Episode I has Qui-Gon and Obi Wan use superspeed to escape droidekas.

A little forethought could have prevented that inconsistency in the story.

If they had ended AotC with Padme giving birth in secret and then written RotS with the twins as 2 or 3 years olds with Padme hiding them for fear of what Anakin was becoming, it would have made more sense. “Protecting her children” would have also given her a more dignified death than “she died of a broken heart”. We could have seen Padme give up her own life to keep the twins a secret and then the twins placed in their respective new homes prior to the last 30 seconds of the PT.

I also tend to agree Lucas started TPM way too early in the timeline and Anakin should have been a teen when the story started. Lucas loved mirroring the storylines and that would have mirrored Luke’s age in A New Hope too.

It'll all be cleaned up after we find out that Padme's death was faked.

I am hoping we get a new Han Solo miniseries from Disney. We find out that when Han fell in The Force Awakens he landed in a fridge at the bottom and when Starkiller Base exploded he flew through space and landed on another planet and survived.

Padme's handmaid's Sabe is currently working with Vader in the current comics and the story is amazing. There's your Vader show and you could bring Nat back.

Technically, wouldn't that be bringing Keira Knightley back?

It was a different handmaiden/decoy that died in Episode 2:

After wrapping the third “Thor” film with Portman reprising her character Jane Foster, Waititi asked if she’d be willing to star in his “Star Wars” movie… you know, after she famously portrayed Princess Leia’s mother Padmé Amidala in “The Phantom Menace,” “Attack of the Clones,” and “Revenge of the Sith.”

“Natalie said to me, ‘What do you do next?’ And I said, ‘I’m trying to work on a ‘Star Wars’ thing. Have you ever wanted to be in a ‘Star Wars’ movie?'” Waititi told Rolling Stone. “She said, ‘I’ve been in ‘Star Wars’ movies.'”

Waititi said with a laugh, “I forgot about those.”

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

Preview for the upcoming issue that recaps the story. I think this would make a great season.

For decades, Sabé, Handmaiden of Padmé, schemed to assassinate Darth Vader, whom she believed murdered her queen.

But Sabé has learned Vader’s greatest secret, and now she fights at his side, believing that someday, she may prove there is still good in him.

What happens when the Handmaiden finally comes face-to-face with the Emperor, who knows all of her secrets?

The Queen’s Shadow enters the crucible! Will Vader let her burn?
Spoiler:
