Impressive gain by Wild Robot, impressive hold for Conclave. I heard no good things about Venom so a sub-50% drop is absolutely fantastic.

Best Xmas Pageant vs Heretic, the duality of BO viewers

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Damn, more films than ever that I've never even heard of. Lots of one-word titles that denote absolutely nothing to me.
SMILE 2 and HERETIC have me flashing back to the '70s.

Good starts for Gladiator and Wicked.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Hmmm...WICKED made twice as much as GLADIATOR II, with about 3/4 of the budget (or half the budget if the $300 million figure was accurate--and it probably wasn't.)

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
So everything is doing 5-day grosses since Thursday and Friday were largely holidays stateside.
Moana 2 looks to gross $215m in that period, it made $54.5m on Black Friday alone (highest to date for that day). Wicked is doing about $118m in that time, it did $32m on Black Friday which is the 3rd best to date behind Moana 2 and Frozen 2. Gladiator 2 is looking like $45m for the 5 day,
Moana 2 will end the weekend at about $275m domestic total, Wicked around $262m domestic, and G2 at around $112m domestic ($278m worldwide).
Gladiator would need $375m domestic to match the original ($187m) adjusted for inflation, which it won't hit.

Strong weekend.

Moana 2 should comfortably hit a billion, interestingly Wicked is very domestic heavy so it probably tops out around 800m. Gladiator heading to 450-500m.

Can't believe Wicked is doing this well, musicals normally don't do this much box office.

Actuals. The top 3 adjusted up slightly. Ultimately, amazing open for Moana 2, excellent hold for Wicked, I would have thought Gladiator II would be a little better but it isn't doing poorly by any means.

Given how huge last weekend was, some pretty alright holds in there. Moana 2 apparently has the highest gross in the time frame to date.

I still have not seen the film, but I am pretty impressed by the re-release gross for Interstellar. Far from the only film to be re-released in theaters for a limited time this year that did surprisingly well.

I might have gone back to the theaters for Interstellar but had just rewatched it early in the fall. Love the movie.

Not often. Les Mis was what, 12 years ago? It did very well, but I don't know if it did as well as Wicked when you adjust for inflation.

Not as common as they used to be. I know when I started paying attention to that stuff in the '60s, there were dozens, like WEST SIDE STORY, MY FAIR LADY, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, OLIVER!, THE MUSIC MAN, FUNNY GIRL, FINIAN'S RAINBOW, HALF A SIXPENCE, HELLO DOLLY, PAINT YOUR WAGON, THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN, CAMELOT, BELLS ARE RINGING, GYPSY, etc. Some were big hits, some notable flops.

Mean Girls came out this year, but they hid the fact that it was based on a Broadway musical and instead opted to make it look like just an unnecessary, inferior remake. I'd be interested to see what it would have done had they publicly embraced that fact. I have friends who are fans of the musical who had no interest in the film UNTIL I told them that it was an adaptation of the musical.

I'm not surprised that interest in Wicked was extremely lukewarm in this board even though it was for all intents and purposes a box office success. .
1st it's close to 3 hours and i know how this board feels about long movies
2nd, it's a musical
Interest in going to the movies aside from Big IP sci-fi or comic tentpoles is down in the board drastically, especially since the pandemic.

I was walking at the mall earlier today and almost ran into three young women wearing pink tutus and crowns. For a split second I wondered wtf... then realized they were heading into towards the theaters.

Great business for Moana and Wicked, not so much for Kraven or LotR. Interstellar is crushing it's rerelease.

Amazon Studios spent $250 million to make “Red One,” a comedic holiday action film starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. Then the company pushed the film into more than 4,000 theaters, spending tens of millions more to market it.
So when the movie racked up only about $80 million in domestic box office receipts in recent weeks — half of which goes to the theater operators — it looked like a huge investment gone horribly bad.
Not so fast, Amazon says. “We did this for a very specific reason,” Courtenay Valenti, the company’s head of film, said.
And that reason: to make it a streaming hit.

How does a comedy about Santa Claus manage to incur $250 million in production costs?
