Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
I really think, and hope, that it was just too much competition this Summer. I think Tom Cruise had it right when he was kind of complaining about it. I know I really wanted to go and didn't have a chance too. One week in premium theaters is just not enough time. I think that the next one will have a good chance to do a lot better. But unless it really blows the doors off of the the BO I think it really will be the swan song for Tom Cruise's MI. I think especially if they market it as his last one and if they are still able to release it next year where there probably will be a lot less competition it should do really well.

I really wanted to see this MI in the theaters. I'm bummed that I missed it.

MI is still playing, but doesn't have any premium screens and far less showings than it did 6 weeks ago. It's not out of theaters yet.

For me it's the premium screens that really draw me to watch a movie in the theater. If I'm going to spend the time and money for to watch a movie in the theater I really want the best presentation possible. It's kind of all or nothing for me. That being said I might still catch it before it hits Paramount+ if I'm free on a discount Tuesday.

Trying not to pile on Blue Beetle/DC too much, but with the very low international numbers it could very well finish with just over 100m+
Let's just hope studios learn the right lessons from this year, some big successes and some huge failures.

Seems like it will be another loser but how much was the budget for BB? It couldn't have been as much as the Flash right?
And studios never learn the right lessons. Look at the Transformers.
"Oh look Bumblebee did great in theaters. It made us some money! Let's make another one."
"Great! Ok why was Bumblebee successful?"
"Could it have been because we actually gave Transformers fans what they wanted with G1 iterations of the franchise they know and love while crafting a tightly paced intimate story featuring actually likeable human characters forming a believable heartfelt endearing bond with our main character all made on a modest budget because we didn't blow it all on ridiculous over the top bloated CGI fights?"
"Nope!"
"Must have been because it was set in the 80's!"
"Okay then lets this one in the 90's!"

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
I just checked a few local theaters and a lot of showings tonight are completely sold out because of National Cinema Day. A 200+ room IMAX auditorium that is showing Gran Turismo tonight is all sold out.
And a 7:50pm showing of Retribution in a 100+ seat auditorium is also sold out at this theater I looked at. It's at a local Mall near where I live.
I'm curious if some movies might get small boosts this weekend when the final numbers come out. It's pretty hot here in California, so I'm sure a lot of families who normally can't afford to pay $12-15 per ticket are taking the entire family out to the movies to escape the heat.

I think generally there's waning interest in visiting movie theaters and Hollywood's continued artistic decline only exacerbates those trends. The increasingly shrinking window between theatrical release and streaming availability isn't great if the idea is to keep moviegoing alive and well.

Yeah I'm holding off on numbers until tomorrow due to National Cinema Day, too much of a moving target for them to really predict.
I agree short windows will kill theater going if they aren't careful

Wanted to get a decent chunk of the discount days sales and re-releases so here's a longer than usual list. Warner wanted to push that Barbie was within range of Gran Turismo, everyone else knew otherwise.

Little Mermaid and Super Mario must have had their theater count raised to take advantage of the $4 showings as they had big spikes in their numbers this weekend.

^ Yeah, Mario added 1,383 screens. 1,560 for Little Mermaid.

Equalizer 3 would have probably made a little more if Denzel was out promoting it. I've only seen Antoine Fuqua doing some light promotion on some media outlets. But, Denzel is way more charming than him. Fuqua is not the most personable guy.
I'm sure there's a portion of people who don't really pay hardcore attention to release dates and media news who have no clue it's out.

Fwiw, it opened on par with with Equalizer 2 ($36m vs $34.5m for E3) and it was the biggest world wide for the franchise.
Elemental is now at $478m worldwide.

Yeah, it just means it's the most consistent.
Equalizer opened to $34.1m, E2 opened to $36m, E3 opened to $34.5m.
By comparison, #2 on that list is Oceans, Oceans 11 opened to $38m, Oceans 12 to $39m, and Oceans 13 to $36m -- with Oceans 8 at $41m.

This is disappointing. Gran Turismo was basically a flop. Need for Speed made way more money and in my opinion this was a far better movie.
Here is a comparison between the two movies.
