Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Curious to see how Strange Darling does next weekend. Otherwise a pretty non event weekend in the movie world. The Crow obviously ain't launching a new franchise, Pussy Island actually did passable for the budget and especially how much MGM/Amazon paid to acquire it.

Twisters has now topped the original film's domestic gross of $241,721,524. The original didn't have an international release while Twisters did too.
The Crow deservedly bombed... never should have been made.

Twister had an international release starting 20 days after the domestic debut but yeah, it was staggered. It grossed $254m overseas vs $98m for Twisters.
I was surprised by how much Twisters under performed overseas.

I switched to the-numbers.com after Amazon/IMDb acquired BOM and paywalled everything. Twister made $495.7m worldwide, Twisters is sitting at $347m so far.

Seeing a lot of advertising and tie ins for Beatlejuice. I'm very interested to see how it will perform. Seems like they're hoping for big blockbuster money.
I'm also very interested to know why studios continue to insist on releasing Halloween movies in the non-Halloween season. It just doesn't make any sense. Why wouldn't they release this in October? Same with Haunted Mansion last year. WTF would Disney release that in July?? Same with Christmas movies that come out in early November. It just doesn't make any sense to me.
But what do I know. I'm just a keyboard warrior.

They're hoping for an $80m opening on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. I hope it does well as the original is one of my all time favorites, but $80m seems high for a 35 year sequel.

Damn... Strange Darling didn't even crack the top 10. That's a shame.Hopefully it can build on some WOM and possibly expand a little more.

I'm curious how it will do this weekend as well, it seems to have some excellent WOM online.

Although it was Memorial Day weekend, Top Gun: Maverick made $126M in it's 3-day weekend ($160M 4-day) and that one came out 36 years after the first, so $80M is attainable. In addition, there's really no competition.

Weekend nums. Strange Darling didn't get a bump unfortunately. Deadpool and Wolverine has got a kung fu grip on the box office.
Beetlejuice x 2 next weekend.

Beetlejuice dominates. Surprised Alien still hasn't crossed $100m, and similarly that It Ends With Us will likely close with $150m (or close to it).

That sucks for the Alien franchise. I thought it was doing really well too. At this point it doesn't look like it will cross $150
And damn. Beetlejuice at $110 for opening? They've got to be thrilled with those numbers.

It is doing well. Only Prometheus has crossed $100mil domestically. Romulus is the second highest grossing film in franchise. It's made over $300mil WW (over $75mil and counting more than the last released film) and again... the second highest grossing film in the franchise behind Prometheus.

Yeah, I was surprised to see how middling performance was for Alien movies domestically. Alien: Romulus is very successful overall.

Oh wow that's really crazy to me. It seems like such a huge franchise. So I guess it is a successful Alien movie.

Weekend numbers. No big surprises. 4 distinctly right wing movies in the top 10, that's rare.

Given its $100M+ OW, not a bad hold for Beetlejuice. Of course, also no real competition either.

Oh yeah, there's no way they aren't happy with that hold.
Apparently it performed a little weakly during the week so the weekend hold came as something of a surprise.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice repeat
Transformers is being seen as a bomb but honestly I feel like $25m for an animated Transformers origin with somewhat flat visual design (by choice) is really solid.

Those are good numbers for Mubi with The Substance. I hope they continue to give some of their films wider releases.

The Substance had a terrific midweek hold and I'm curious how it will do this weekend.
The-numbers has a chart for how movies normally do at certain levels, it's clearing the upper norm.

The Wild Robot is excellent. Caught it in Dolby with the family on opening day and I was really glad for it.
