Depending on whose numbers you believe, Mufasa has to make $750M - $900M to break even. It's doing better than people thought it would, but it's still pulling weak-to-disappointing numbers.

Still, sandwiched between Wicked, Sonic, and Moana 2, it managed to get decent numbers. Not decent enough to make Disney happy, but not a bomb by any means.

I dunno, Disney cares about merchandising, as long as the movie isn't a total loss I'm sure they're happy.

I mean, we have three, count 'em THREE Cars movies and it's all because the merchandise revenues for those movies are through the roof.

Then again, as a film would you want to be mentioned in the same breath at Cars 2 and 3?

Did you all know Jared Harris had a new movie out this weekend? He’s a terrific actor, but this looks like Faith based trash from none other than Angel Studios. Well, unsurprisingly it flopped.

Literally no idea what this film is, but that’s insane box office.

I guess this is why they keep making Kung Fu Panda movies.
Comes to the US next weekend

Dog Man - Dreamworks animated movie.

Heart Eyes - Serial Killer horror movie

Love Hurts - Action comedy with Ke Huy Quan from Everything Everywhere All at once.

You're likely not the target audience for these movies and probably never paid any attention to their marketing.

Actually, Ash is arguably a partial target for Love Hurts.

But i also hear it didn't turn out well.

Wow, no kidding! Those are some crazy numbers and an insane record broken. So it's done better than literally any movie has done in the US. Force Awakens, Any MCU movie, Avatar, better than any those. And it did it in just 11 days.

Now I'm very curious what this movie is that have the Chinese so hopped up.

It's also really interesting to see just how much China is producing everything locally now. Industry, vehicles, healthcare and now movies.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I'm coming in early with the Brave New World takes... it's looking like a 90m three day, 100+m four day opening. You will see a lot of attempts to paint this as positive...comparing it to Winter Soldier, etc. Could be headed for a 175m domestic and 225 international finish for a 400m total.

about what was predicted for Captain America, it should be around $100m for the 4 day. Nice boost for Heart Eyes over Valentines weekend.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Ne Zha 2 is actually a billion dollar movie in China.

It’s disappointing that apparently nobody wanted to see Companion in the theater and it flopped despite its low budget. But, I guess people are being picky what they deem is theater worthy.

It was a $10m movie like The Brutalist and The Monkey, and has made 3x its budget worldwide. I think it will find some profit. Also, huzzah for the return of reasonably budgeted movies.

I haven't seen the new entry yet but watched the earlier movie in the franchise. It's basically the equivalent of The Lion King in terms of impact for the Chinese market, touching upon very popular Chinese folklore. Nothing particularly groundbreaking but a stylish, crowdpleasing film made for a wide variety of ages. It's something Disney could have made in the 1990s.

We threw our money behind Paddington in Peru this weekend and it was money well-spent!

Huh. Love Hurts held pretty darned well. Granted, weekend #1 wasn't a big success, but, still - that's a good hold.

Fun movie. Not great, but fun.

And people still question why Hollywood panders to China.
