Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
I ended up pretty close, they're calling international at 95m. Domestically it's doing well and should end up well past 300m, unfortunately overseas it's not hitting as well. Looking like a 550-575m finish - decent but not the homerun they will try to spin it as.
Reminder that Man of Steel's cited 116m opening isn't counting it's Thurs previews, which were 12m. Also Superman's opening is including it's Tues showings, which I believe was 3m.

Honestly, anything over $100m domestic is impressive to me given how little hype I personally saw for the movie. Overseas isn't a big surprise given the fact this is the 3rd relaunch of Superman in the last 20 years and really the trailer isn't great. Plus he's a character heavily associated with Americana which isn't exactly a selling point overseas at the moment.
But that's imo.

Yeah, I was underwhelmed by the advertising blitz for Superman. Seen a million of the Dairy Queen spots and not much else. The toys in retail stores seemed like afterthoughts. Many of the shots and clips they picked to promote the film were uninspired. This box office mostly reflects Superman's built-in audience and doesn't really expand much beyond that.

Most people who watched Superman this weekend lived in Los Angeles apparently.
Also, the AMC Burbank 16, which is also near LA, was also a big hub for Superman showings
I don't know where Rich lives in Florida, but I guess it was a a tiny market for showings and advertising.

DC was on a complete downward trajectory before Gunn and Safran were hired. The last half dozen or so movies that had the "DC" IP were mostly critically panned and financial disappointments or flat out flops.
Some talking heads are going to try to spin this negatively. But, this is a great start in this new direction for the IP.

It's a good start for sure, but I'd have to stop short of calling it great. It's "mission accomplished" in getting overall positive critic reviews, positive audience reaction and making decent money (legging out to 600m would help) I haven't seen the film yet, but it sounds like the film itself is good, but not reaching greatness - I think that's also a fair assessment of the rollout overall. Sure, there will be certain channels that paint it as a failure(which isn't true) but I'm seeing far more pushing misinformation in the other direction- such as the Man of Steel numbers I noted earlier. Grace Randolph just ran with that complete lie. I'm hoping Dan Murrell gives an honest breakdown on Tues.

Id agree it isn't a phenomenal start but it's promising given the headwinds.

Always a good sign when a movie corrects up instead of down.

I think that has a lot to do with it. There are probably a decent amount of people like me that are waiting it out to see what the reviews say before taking the whole fam. (And I'm waiting for job schedule and discount tuesday/wednesday before taking the whole family). So I wonder if the drop won't be quite to massive next week. It'll still be huge considering it's a comic book movie but maybe in the high 50s instead of high 60s.

Superman's returns this week have been very good so far, looks like the reviews and word of mouth have given it some legs.

I talked to my 71-year-old mom yesterday and she went to see it. No grandkids or anything, just because she had heard good things. So it seems to be intriguing people outside the regular superhero audience.

It's being talked about a lot, both positive and negative, but it's holding mass attention so that's a positive.
It made $12.9m on Monday and $17.1m on Tuesday, currently sitting at $155m domestic.
The weekend split was $22.5m in previews, $33.6m on Friday, $37.6m on Saturday, and $31.3m on Sunday.
Some strong performers currently - F1 at $400m worldwide, Jurassic World at $540m, How to Train Your Dragon at $562m.
Lilo & Stitch has $5m more to go to clear $1 billion worldwide.

Lilo and Stitch is officially the first US movie of 2025 to cross a billion worldwide. Ne Zha 2 still remains the highest with around $2 billion.

There's just no way that anything beats Ne Zha 2. It's still going and it's already sitting at #8 for all time worldwide BO. That's just insane.

Sounds like Superman will only have about a 52% drop this weekend, which is pretty good.

I count six film titles that are much older films. Are people suddenly flocking to reissues or are these completely new remakes?

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Yeah, good holds all around. Superman looks to be locked in at 600m+ (I'll say 625m final) With the big July films likely finishing in the 600-800m range (JP being the winner) there is a discussion to be had about whether it was a good idea to release them all so close to each other, and how they might've made more with further separation.

I think it's kind of funny.
Superman, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and Smurfs are all legacy with no change to their name. Jurassic World Rebirth, 28 Years Later and Mission Impossible could easily be mistaken for other entries based on name.

Not much competition but still really solid drop for Superman. I will be interested to see how much it drops next weekend.
