Well, It doesn't look like Joy Ride will be some sleeper smash hit. The early estimates are between $5-6M for the weekend.
It's playing in about 2800 theaters with a relatively conservative marketing budget from what I can tell. But, the 4 ladies did a big promotional campaign for it. I've seen them in day time and they are appearing on a lot of YouTube videos. I'm not going to guess and make up some bullshit uninformed reason why the box office wasn't bigger.
I saw a lot of talk about it in Threads and on my social media feeds and it's been all positive buzz.

B- Cinemascore for it also suggests it didn't find it's audience opening night.

The Flash falling out of the top 10 (12 now) just shows to me the general casual movie goer just didn't care about this movie. Seems like only the hardcore comic DC IP nerds paid attention to it.
What a disaster for WBD. I would say it's bombed harder than Shazam 2 considering how much WB has put into it.

I'm still really kind of surprised. I thought the trailer looked great and the whole nostalgia thing is really hot right now. And Michael Keaton holds a lot of weight. I really wanted to see it but this Summer is just packed and just never got around to it. I wish AMC would bring back their $5 Tuesdays.
I get why it might have disappointed but this was an utter disaster.

To be clear, the $5 Tuesdays are available at the free level of Stubs, so you just have to sign up to get them.

Joy Ride sadly has bombed pretty hard. Through 10 days it's barely made over $10M. I guess this movie just had limited appeal. What I also find surprising is that it's not even playing in Asia. Now with the strike, the 4 main actors can't even support it now.
Maybe also as said above this movie had no big stars and that was a deterrent. Stephanie Hsu is only moderately known and Ashley Park is on a small Netflix show. Daniel Dae Kim was the only known star in it and his part was basically a cameo.
Well, I intend to support it when it hits physical media in a few months.

The Flash's collapse is just stunning. All that bad publicity from Ezra destroyed its box office potential.

Ashley Park isn't the star of it, but Emily in Paris is definitely not a small Netflix show. It is very popular.

Even for my kids, I had to intentionally watch all the earlier Spider-man movies with them so they wouldn't be super confused when we watched No Way Home.

Michael Keaton Batman was a hot property...in the 1990s. But this generation grew up on Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. I guarantee there would have been more interest if Christian Bale had come back.

Barbie made $22.5m in preview showings, Oppenheimer did about $10.5m

I was wondering if Barbie was just an internet trending thing or if it would turn into box office, and looks like we have our answer--it's going to have a strong weekend.

It's currently expected to land at $150m - $170m for the weekend which would put it at #1 opening for the year. If it under delivers, it'll still be higher than I would have expected a few months ago. Hell, the $68m - $70m it is looking to make from previews and today are higher than I expected for opening weekend..

Barbie was kind of expected but for a three hour biopic about a physicist, this is impressive:
Universal’s Oppenheimer is certainly not getting scraps: It’s headed for $32M today, including previews, and a $75M 3-day at 3,610 theaters. That’s higher than Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny‘s $60.3M start. Wow.

Both are impressive to me. If you told me ten years ago the biggest things in movies would be Barbie, Super Mario Bros, and an Oppenheimer Biopic I still don't think I would have taken that bet

Currently looking like $161m for Barbie and $77.5m for Oppenheimer. For those curious, both pulled A Cinemascores.

I know the clickbait sites and pundits will act like Barbie "beat" Oppenheimer but truth be told that's a staggering total for BOTH movies. There's no way the 3-hour biopic was going to beat the family-friendly phenomenon and that's an amazing result for both.
Feeling a little sorry for Tom Cruise, though.

Oppenheimer would have also made even more had it not been a 3-hour film. Barbie is under 2-hours, so there's more showings per day.

It does suck for Cruise considering how positive he's been with all the movies lately, but I think he'll be alright. Hopefully Dead Reckoning still legs out a bit after an inevitable steep drop this weekend. It may even get a slight boost with potential Oppenheimer sell outs today and tomorrow.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
I don't think Oppenheimer is going to have much or any repeat business. Very long movie and the content isn't exactly re-watchable.
I enjoyed the movie and think it's one of the best of 2023, but I won't re-visit it for awhile. Dedicating that amount of time is tough.
I'm sure some here who do watch it will think it's a long and boring slog.

The Oppenheimer number is wild. Had Nolan not left WB for Universal and WB released both movies at separate times... Oppenheimer doesn't get anywhere near this opening.

I guess that Barbieheimer nonsense paid off. Foolish people want to be part of the "trend," so the films make even more than originally projected.

Mission: Impossible might not outgross Indy domestically and I'm not sure it will break even although I am out of my depth there. I did not see that coming after Top Gun and with it being so well reviewed including an A Cinemascore.
What a smash Barbie is.
