Hell, I'm even disputing Ben Affleck's status in that line.
I think you just need to come to the conclusion that you are out of touch there, old man.

He was on Game of Thrones, the biggest show in the world. Plus he has a very distinctive look, so he has a high recognition factor.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

To be fair, he's never been the star of a hit movie. I certainly wouldn't call him one of the world's most popular stars. Hell, he was off GoT in one season and none of the show's stars have really crossed over into movie stardom except maybe Emilia Clarke. I doubt most could even name Nikolaj Coster-Waldau except by his character name.

I agree. Being on Game of Thrones has zip to do with your ability to open a major motion picture.

Yeah, Momoa isn't exactly popular or well known. Affleck though? Of course he is.

Not marketing Superman in the trailers was a huge mistake even though it is supposed to be obvious that he is in the movie. I don't think
Spoiler:
his reveal in the last third of the movie surprised anyone who went.
.

BUT to the uninformed like my girlfriend she did not know he was in it. It would have helped the awareness and the Box Office.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Coco kicked off with $2.3m last night, $300k less than Moana which made $56.6m (3 day) / $82.8m (5 day) this time last year.

Justice League reaped $10.6m yesterday, up 41% from Monday, for a $111.9m cume. Wonder pulled $5.6m and is up at $37m so far.

Happy Death Day crossed the century mark worldwide.

Agreed, it was a disastrous marketing decision.

I thought Justice League marketing was generally very poor and shoddy. I don't even like most of the related merchandise for the film or its stupid tag lines like Unite The Seven.

Warner has still never figured out superheroes, even when they occasionally stumble into a great cape film.

I'm hearing that WB is bracing itself for a 50-100m loss.

I'd also note I pointed out the poor derision making involving Doomsday and the "Death of Superman" story line after BVS was released, and why they would do such a thing before JL, so I'm not blaming this on marketing. This is all on the piss poor execs inside of WB studios.

It's a pretty common holdover/dumping ground weekend, if it's a big movie it's either going to open over Thanksgiving or closer to Christmas.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is notoriously slow at the box office, so the studios usually abandon it. You might get some rando horror movie, and art house movies may use the weekend to expand further, but that's about it.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

guess its not all bad for WB:

Warner Bros. became the first studio in 2017 to cross the $2 billion mark at the domestic box office. Overall, 2017 is shaping up to be the second best year in the studio's history domestically, while its worldwide performance is shaping up to be WB's best ever after it recently topped $5 billion at the global marketplace led by releases such as Wonder Woman, It, Justice League and Dunkirk.
