Correction: I get $3 off. So the cheapest ticket at 10:30 am and in the smallest theater is $6. And premium screens is just $3 off. Instead of before where it was $5 and then they tack on the premium screen upgrade fee on top of it so it was only like $8.

I mean how much weight does Michael Keaton really hold over audiences born after, say, '85 or so? Granted I have no idea about the demographics of the general audiences that see these blockbusters.
Even for my kids, I had to intentionally watch all the earlier Spider-man movies with them so they wouldn't be super confused when we watched No Way Home.

Top Gun
Ghostbusters (hit or miss on success)
Jurassic Park
If you include TV there's a ton of more examples.
But, just ask Indy. Nostalgia isn't enough to carry a movie. Maybe people are showing signs of tiring of nostalgia? Or is it just specific to an IP? Or is DC just a total flaming hot mess now?

I thought it was great. Pretty hilarious that the media picked up on the disparity in tone between the two movies and latched on to it. I mean it's a pretty damn nice change of pace to have something so wholesome and funny in the news for once.

I really feel MI was really hampered by the tight release schedule problem this summer. I think the audience for MI skews a little bit older so probably still has a lot of life obligations so could probably benefit from more exclusive time in theaters. Especially for the premium screens. I'm mainly basing that off of my own personal experience. I really wanted to watch it but now that Barbeinheimer have taken over all the premium screens I feel a lot less pressed to go out and watch it.

He's just referencing the social media hype. Albeit with a particularly harsh tone.
They're two well reviewed high-ish budget movies that are doing better than their higher budget studio siblings.

Admission data:
Barbie clocked 12.8M admissions, which is the highest non-MCU/fresh IP film to open since EntTellgience began monitoring. Only Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home are ahead of it.
Oppenheimer had 5.8M admissions which EntTelligence says a record breaker in the firm’s post pandemic era; the most attendees for an R-rated opening surpassing John Wick: Chapter 4‘s 5.2M.

That’s what I was thinking as well. The rivalry made this an event, and the “loser” in the match-up did incredibly well because it was part of the whole experience, and not just a new Nolan film. Remarkable.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
I'm having an issue with edit, but wanted to add Barbie made $337m worldwide this weekend, Oppenheimer pulled $174.2m.
Both are very impressive. Apparently Warner is still busting ass trying to woo Nolan back after their breakup over Tenet. Apparently just flinging million dollar checks his way now
Barbie also apparently had the 2nd biggest opening day ever in Brazil after End Game.
I'm sure Margot Robbie is also ecstatic given her less than ideal box office these last few years.

Unfortunately Mission Impossible had to pay the price, but I’m just glad the box office has picked up and people are going out to the Theaters. Could also be picking up due to the heat wave in many parts of the U.S. People want to relax on a recliner in an air Conditioned Room for a few hours.

Paramount should’ve given M:I the release date they gave to Transformers in June or tried opening it on July 5th.

Somewhat surprisingly, Ryan Goslings previous high opening was Blade Runner 2049, at $32.8m.

It definitely ain't no $5 anymore. I don't get any kind of a discount anymore where I used to before. Maybe just my theater.

Wow, there are literally no numbers on Cobweb. Not even listed in the top 25. I mentioned in the movie thread, I saw it 2 years ago at a test screening. The special effects weren't done yet at the time. But, the fact that Lionsgate held onto it for 2 years and just randomly dumped it in late July with no promotion signaled to me they didn't care for it.

This is the concession line at the multiplex in Vegas at 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon. Barbenheimer is REAL!

I heard Blue Beetle a upcoming DC film is not tracking well.
Looks like 2023 maybe the reset or the end of the comic book genre if all DC films bomb and the Marvel movies have lower numbers and maybe Hollywood will try more stuff like Barbie and Oppenheimer to get people back into the theaters.
DC might have to put all their eggs into Batman and Superman and think twice about other DC projects.

While I didn't partake in the Barbenheimer wknd, it's incredible to see and we can only hope studios take notes and learn some lessons from it. Both should have good legs - for example my folks and I are waiting for week 3 to see Oppenheimer on IMAX to avoid the crowds (not a movie we need to rush out to see because of spoilers) - plus going to Indy and M:I within several weeks was out of the norm for them already. Speaking of M:I, I never bought into the '5 day would've been the 3 day opening' narratives - it's clearly underperforming across the board and they just lost Fallout's 34m 2nd wnd - it'll be lucky to make 600m.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
“Barbie” ended up with $162 million in its first weekend of release, above Sunday’s already record-breaking estimate of $155 million. The film brought in $43.7 million on Sunday, a decline of just 9% from Saturday.
...
“Oppenheimer,” too, beat expectations with $82.4 million, just slightly higher than Sunday’s huge $81.5 million projection.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
We saw Oppenheimer on Thursday and Barbie on Saturday (because Friday's showings were sold out). I said in the review threads that I had trouble finding a parking spot at the Alamo both days which has never happened before, even for a Marvel movie. The whole "Barbieheimer" thing was just....fun. The whole thing was probably the most fun I've had at the theaters post-pandemic (except for when I rented out a whole theater for Tenet for just me and my wife and son. That was super fun too).
