Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Minecraft pulled $10.55m in previews last night, a record for a videogame property.

Whoah!! That's pretty impressive for Minecraft after a pretty sluggish Spring so far. I've never played the game, but I am aware of it's popularity. Last night, I went to see The Amateur (early screening) and the theater was pretty busy. Mostly families to see Minecraft I assume.

Really tight competition this weekend. But Minecraft still won by a big margin. I’ve seen all of them except the Faith based cartoon.

I've only heard of four of those movies, unless "Good Bad Ugly" is a re-release of the 1967 Leone movie, in which case that would be five, but some sixth sense tells me it's not.

Like I told you a few months ago, you need to follow Fandango.com more to learn more of new movies coming out and buying tickets. That's basically the main hub and has trailers too. Don't rely on this site.

It's from India, a lot of the releases of late are either 1. from India, or 2. TV episodes on the big screen.

Minecraft had the benefit of a good friday holiday where the drop from the previous Friday was only 22%.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Actuals:

It's looking like +$6.7m on Monday

Tonight, we’re hearing from sources that Sinners‘ Easter Monday is coming in around $6.7M+, -45% from Sunday’s $12.3M. That puts the movie’s 4-day take at close to $55M. That’s a commendable Monday for a horror movie higher than the Mondays of such genre movies as Jordan’s Peele’s Us ($5.9M), Nope ($4.7M), Get Out ($4.1M) and even such original horror movie as The Conjuring ($5.5M) and A Quiet Place ($4.1M).

I'll be laughing my ass off if King of Kings ends up with more than Snow White. Doubtful but it would be funny if it did.

Minecraft isn't projected to do that well yet my local movie gave it one of the Dolby screens. Glad they at least gave the other one to Sinners for its second weekend. I'm wondering if they think Until Dawn may be a surprise hit along the lines of Five Nights at Freddy's ?

Until Dawn is looking at a single digital start this weekend, it isn't nearly the IP that FNAF was.

it's just a busy weekend. Sinners is expected to hold strong, Revenge of the Sith has its re-release opening and may be a surprise pull this weekend, The Account 2 is opening and looks to do close to $25m, A Minecraft Movie had middling mid-week performance so that is likely to drop to $20m+ but that's still quite strong. Then there's Until Dawn at the bottom of the heap.

Thusdays Box Office was:
Sinners - $6m
"Preview" Revenge of the Sith - $3m
"Preview" The Accountant 2 - $2.5m
Minecraft - $2m
Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii - $1.3m
"Preview" Until Dawn - $1m

A friend of mine showed me the IMAX seating chart for tonight's 7:20 PM Sinners and as of 2:00PM CST it was already 2/3 full. He said there's a chance every black adult American who's able will see it at least once.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Scott Mendelson had a pretty fair assessment on Sinners.(as he usually does) It's looking like it will hit 200m domestic and maybe 75m international. Is it a win for WB? - Yes, it absolutely is based on their talent first approach. Is there room for discussion on budget concerns? I would hope so. The idea that any criticism of this film is off limits is just absurd.

i dont believe anyone is claiming you can't criticize the movie. There was a notable amount of negativity toward the movies $45m opening and $90m budget from places that have praised higher budget movies with lower openings.

As for the movie itself, criticize away

With that said, Sinners looks like it made $13m on Friday and should land around $42m for the weekend. Down about 13% or so

King of Kings is looking at a 75% drop this weekend, to $3.5m, laughing averted

I enjoyed the movie, but found some flaws myself. I have a feeling this is one of those movies some critics are afraid to get too , well, critical with because they don't want to be seen as the outliers, and in some cases maybe accused of being racist.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

One of the smallest drops for a major blockbuster release in modern film history!

I heard a crazy stat : last weekend was the first time a single studio had two films make over $40M each in the same weekend since 2009, when Avatar and Alvin & The Chimpmunks : The Squeakquel did it for Fox.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

This was probably one of the best weekends in years for the box office - you had a fantastic variety of different kinds of films making 20+m. Not sure it makes up for the low start to the year, but it's good to see.
