I didn't realize how limited Beast's release was. It's the new MMA movie out this week.

PHM continues to crush it. Mario Galaxy is still performing well. The Drama is having a very impressive run.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I saw You, Me and Tuscany last week and I thought it was cute. I didn't create a thread or post a review because it's not the kind of movie that appeals to this forum. And no one here would care.

For a hard R rated horror movie that would have limited appeal,. I think that's about where I thought Lee Cronin's The Mummy would end up. 3rd place. I posted a reviews thread for it, but I guess those kind of movies have limited appeal here too. Some here just don't enjoy watching disturbing hard R violence and images in the theater.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I thought about going to see You, Me, and Tuscany just because I heard a few writers of similar projects say online that it was being looked at closely to determine whether their projects would be given a green light but this weekend was the only one where I'd probably be able to fit it in and it's WrestleMania weekend so ....

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I'm really surprised by the good holds for Mario. I thought it would be pretty front loaded. That's great news for them and Nintendo movies in general.

I'm loving seeing PHM keep going. So awesome. I haven't rooted for a movie like that in awhile. I almost added to that total again. Haven't rewatched a movie in the theaters in a REALLY long time. (Endgame? Force Awakens?) Didn't know PHM was such a family movie so wanted to take the whole family but the wife put a kibosh on it since she didn't think our 7 year old would care. And she's probably right but I want to expand her horizons dammit! Hopefully I'll be able to take my 14 yo but maybe we'll just wait until it's on Amazon Prime.

Mario isn't holding that well given expectations and how the first one performed on streaming (more or less the #1 streamed movie since it hit). It will be lucky now to break $1 billion when many believed it could challenge for the top performing of 2026.

Granted I have no idea what the expectations were but two weeks in a row with < 50% drop and a >$100 million opening weekend are really good numbers no matter how you slice it. Either way it will be massively profitable. And in no universe, galaxy or otherwise, would a Mario movie outperform Avengers Doomsday. Or Spider-Man for that matter.

Neither will be as big as Toy Story 5. That’s the biggie this year.

Oh yeah that one too. You really think Toy Story 5 will take the crown? Over Doomsday? I mean the MCU's golden sheen has been tarnished quite a bit since the last Avengers movie. But it seems like this movie will be really huge. I guess we'll see soon enough.

Yes I do. A combination of the loss of a lot of the enthusiasm of the MCU films, the "rushed" nature of this film (the Thanos storyline was set up over a decade, no one in the MCU has even mentioned Doom's name yet) and primarily the loss of all the IMAX screens for the first three full weeks of release. Mostly though, that's the new reality of the Box Office. Zootopia 2 was the top grossing film at the Box Office domestically in 2025, and Toy Story is a MUCH more beloved film franchise than that one.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I dunno. Are we talking worldwide or domestic? The MCU has had some stinkers recently but Deadpool and Wolverine and the last Spider-Man movie really banked. Those were both after Endgame.

Toy Story 4
US: $434,038,008
WW: $1,073,841,394

Spider-Man NWH
US: $814,866,759
WW: $1,921,426,073

Deadpool & Wolverine
US: $636,745,858
WW: $1,338,073,645

Zootopia 2
US: $428,130,160
WW: $1,866,647,950

Sure, maybe it's rushed in terms of the plot specifically to Dr. Doom but the general population doesn't care about that. They'll see all the characters they know and love from two different franchises on screen at the same time. That's going to bring people out in droves. And yeah sure over all Toy Story is a beloved film franchise but it's mostly yesterday's news. Or more like a generation ago's news. Zootopia is the current hot commodity and people were clamoring for a sequel. Plus it did gangbusters overseas (77%!). I don't think anyone asked for another Toy Story. Toy Story 5 will do great. It might even contend for the top spot worldwide. But domestically? No way. Doomsday wins hands down.

I didn't realize that whole Infinity Vision thing was just because of Dune 3's IMAX exclusivity. Did they not think about that before moving the date? That is a weird rushed thing that just reeks of a money grab to charge more for a supposedly better experience.

Ok, looking at the numbers I can see how it could be considered a disappointment.

Mario
US: $574,934,330
WW: $1,360,783,214

Galaxy
US: $361,825,355
WW: $755,815,355

It's not quite done with it's run but only doing ~60% of what the first one did so far domestically. WW it still has a long ways to go since it hasn't even opened in Japan yet. So that will add another $100,000,000 or so. So being generous it breaks a billion then it will do ~70% of the what the first one did. Still a wildly successful movie. But yeah sure short of expectations.

You’re ignoring the total lack of IMAX screens for its first three weeks at least. That is the loss of a ton of revenue. Now Barbie didn’t have them either and still made tons. But I think in this case the stupid (and still correctable) decision to keep Doomsday in the same release date as Dun3 is going to be enough to keep it from the top spot overall.
You picked the the two Marvel films that did the best, but remember both were special things we’d never seen before (and neither were really ‘MCU’ films). Every ‘typical’ MCU film since Endgame has really disappointed at the Box Office. If Final Four ‘only’ did $274M domestic, and that was really the biggest MCU film since Endgame, I think it’s unrealistic to expect Doomsday to more than double that. The MCU films have lost too much of their juice to be the massive events they were before.
I guess we’ll see soon enough.

I edited my response after you already responded (stupid work ):

Do IMAX premiums really add up to that much? For my dollar if I don't see a big release in IMAX then I'll see it in Dolby Digital which also commands a premium. Or do you think people won't go if it's not in IMAX? I don't really think that's the case. Totally disagree with you on Doomsday. It's not at all typical MCU film. I picked D&W and SM yes because they are the most successful MCU movies (yes they are definitely MCU films) since Endgame but they're also the most similar to Doomsday. D&W finally brings Wolverine officially into the MCU. SM was a huge multiverse cross over. Doomsday will have all of that plus the pent up desire to see most of the original Avengers characters returning together for the first time since Endgame. It's going to be huge. But I agree that the MCU has lost a lot of it's appeal. Fantastic Four was a modest success but definitely shows that they don't have the appeal that they used to.

And I also agree that they were stupid to move the release date to where they did. Why not just postpone it to next year? Disney makes some boneheaded moves when it comes to their timing sometimes. Doomsday is a make it or break it moment for the MCU going forward. If Doomsday isn't a runaway success with all that they're throwing at it there's no way that any other MCU movie will be able to make it. I think anything less than $500 million would be a disappointment. We'll see...

Oh, it will make more than $500M. I just think Toy Story 5 will be bigger. Again, I'm someone who interacts with kids of all ages every single day, and I'll tell you barely a day goes by without a kid showing up in a Buzz or Woody shirt or hoodie. I've NEVER seen a kid in Zootopia merch. Combine the continued popularity of the Toy Story franchise among children with the childhood nostalgia of Millenial parents, and that's a recipe for a massive, massive hit.
Plus, like I've said before, making an iPad the bad guy? Pure genius!

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

And Disney didn't need to move Doomsday to next year, they could have at least moved it up a week and gotten one good weekend to itself on those screens.
IMAX made up approximately 20% of Project Hail Mary's total Box Office, $60-$70M total apparently worldwide.

That's right you do have your ear to the ground with kids. And heck my daughter had a Toy Story themed birthday party last year. And yeah, especially the latest trailers are looking really promising with tech being the bad guy. It will certainly resonate with parents. It will definitely be a massive hit. It will definitely make more domestically than Zootopia 2. Internationally I don't know. Zootopia is the hot new thing right now. Maybe not in merch or recognition, since oddly enough there isn't much Zootopia merch.

Either way Disney is going to have a REALLY good year this year.

I thought horror was this forum’s jam, I’m surprised that nobody here watched the new Lee Cronin’s The Mummy movie except maybe 3 of us. unless some here were just not interested in posting.

Mother Mary did terribly.
Hey it did draw 8.3% of the total box office -- of movies with the word "Mary" in the title -- this weekend!
